Background: The complex aetiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D), characterised by a detrimental cross-talk between the immune system and insulin-producing beta cells, has hindered the development of effective disease-modifying therapies. The discovery that the pharmacological activation of LRH-1/NR5A2 can reverse hyperglycaemia in mouse models of T1D by attenuating the autoimmune attack coupled to beta cell survival/regeneration prompted us to investigate whether immune tolerisation could be translated to individuals with T1D by LRH-1/NR5A2 activation and improve islet survival.
Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from individuals with and without T1D and derived into various immune cells, including macrophages and dendritic cells.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most prevalent secondary complications associated with diabetes. Specifically, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) has an immune component that may determine the evolution of DR by compromising the immune response of the retina, which is mediated by microglia. In the early stages of DR, the permeabilization of the blood-retinal barrier allows immune cells from the peripheral system to interact with the retinal immune system.

In our study, we focused on the role of the distal ileum as a main endocrine actor in relation to the pancreas. We investigated the effects of intestinally released hormones on the pancreas in terms of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) improvement, as a main effect of bariatric surgeries. To specifically study the importance of the ileum, we used an experimental surgical model performed in healthy Wistar rats.

A problem of systemic pharmacotherapy is off-target activity, which causes adverse effects. Outstanding examples include neuroinhibitory medications like antiseizure drugs, which are used against epilepsy and neuropathic pain but cause systemic side effects. There is a need of drugs that inhibit nerve signals locally and on-demand without affecting other regions of the body.

(1) Background: Hyperglycaemia that occurs during enteral nutrition (EN) should be prevented and treated appropriately since it can have important consequences for morbidity and mortality. However, there are few quality studies in the literature regarding the management of EN in this situation. The objective of this project was to attempt to respond, through a panel of experts, to those clinical problems regarding EN in patients with diabetes or stress hyperglycaemia (hereinafter referred to only as hyperglycaemia) for which we do not have conclusive scientific evidence; (2) Methods: The RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method, a modified Delphi panel method, was applied.

Background: Determining the infiltration of carcinomas is essential for the proper follow-up and treatment of cancer patients. However, it continues to be a diagnostic challenge for pathologists in multiple types of tumors. In previous studies (carried out in surgical specimens), the protein COL11A1 has been postulated as an infiltration marker mainly expressed in the extracellular matrix (ECM).

Objectives: Neck recurrence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is frequently detected after initial surgery. The management of these lesions may include rescue surgery (RS) or minimally invasive techniques in selected patients, but comparative studies evaluating the effectiveness and safety of these techniques are lacking. In this paper, we compared ultrasound-guided ethanol ablation (EA) in selected patients to RS in a matched cohort.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection significantly affects the cardiovascular system, causing vascular damage and thromboembolic events in critical patients. Endothelial dysfunction represents one of the first steps in response to COVID-19 that might lead to cardiovascular complications and long-term sequelae. However, despite the enormous efforts in the last two years, the molecular mechanisms involved in such processes remain poorly understood.

Actual therapeutic options for patients are scarce and merely palliative. Although they affect millions of patients worldwide, the molecular mechanisms underlying these conditions remain unclear.

In patients who have achieved optimal LDL-C control, there remains a residual risk of atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD) related to alterations in lipid metabolism, where alterations in triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and the cholesterol they contain, called remnant cholesterol, play a major role. Remnant cholesterol has an association with residual risk of ACVD that is independent of LDL-C and has been demonstrated in epidemiological and Mendelian randomisation studies, and in analyses of clinical trials of lipid-lowering drugs. Remnant triglyceride-rich lipoproteins particles are highly atherogenic, due to their ability to enter and be retained in the arterial wall, their high cholesterol content, and their ability to generate "foam cells" and an inflammatory response.

Objective: The aim of this study was to present the results obtained in the Newborn Screening Program (NSP) for sickle cell disease (SCD) in western Andalusia and the autonomous city of Ceuta in the first 3 years of implementation, and to describe the discrepancies found in the diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies between the screening method and the confirmatory tests.
Study Design: A descriptive and retrospective study was carried out, and the findings obtained in the newborns included in the NSP between November 2018 and December 2021 were analyzed.
Results: A total of 111,205 samples were screened by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

The population with obesity has increased at an alarming rate during this century. Bariatric surgery has been demonstrated to be a good method to control weight and, most importantly, associated comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus or high blood pressure. The reason why this happens even before losing significant weight remains unclear.

Despite the extraordinary advances achieved to beat COVID-19 disease, many questions remain unsolved, including the mechanisms of action of SARS-CoV-2 and which factors determine why individuals respond so differently to the viral infection. Herein, we performed an analysis to identify host microRNA targeting , , and/or RAB14, all genes known to participate in viral entry and replication. Next, the levels of six microRNA candidates previously linked to viral and respiratory-related pathologies were measured in the serum of COVID-19-negative controls (n = 16), IgG-positive COVID-19 asymptomatic individuals (n = 16), and critical COVID-19 patients (n = 17).

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a complex and heterogeneous disease, with pulmonary and extrapulmonary manifestations, which leads to the need to personalize the assessment and treatment of these patients. The latest updates of national and international guidelines for the management of COPD reveal the importance of respiratory rehabilitation (RR) and its role in improving symptoms, quality of life, and psychosocial sphere of patients. Within RR, the inspiratory muscle training (IMT) has received special interest, showing benefits in maximum inspiratory pressure, perception of well-being, and health status in patients with chronic heart disease, respiratory diseases, and dyspnea during exercise.

During Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) progression, there is chronic and low-grade inflammation that could be related to the evolution of the disease. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate whether peripheral levels of pro-inflammatory markers such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is significantly different among patients with or without T1DM, in gender, management of the T1DM, detection in several biological fluids, study design, age range, and glycated hemoglobin. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, and 26 relevant studies (2186 with T1DM, 2047 controls) were included.
