J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr

September 2022

the Institute of Gastroenterology, Nutrition, and Liver Diseases, Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel, Petah Tikva, Israel and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • The pEEr registry was created to gather and analyze data on children with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) from various centers in Europe and Israel, focusing on phenotypic characteristics.
  • A total of 582 children were analyzed, revealing a median diagnosis age of 10.5 years and a common delay in diagnosis, especially in children under 6, with variations in symptoms based on age.
  • Older children more frequently experienced dysphagia and food impaction, while younger children showed non-specific symptoms; treatments differed, with many unresponsive patients receiving topical steroids or elimination diets.

Usefulness of the hemogram as a measure of clinical and serological activity in systemic lupus erythematosus.

J Transl Autoimmun

May 2022

Systemic Autoimmune Diseases Unit, Internal Medicine Service, IDIPHIM (University Hospital Puerta de Hierro Research Institute), Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain.

Background And Objectives: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) follow-up is based on clinical, and analytical parameters. We aimed to determine the differences between the Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) between SLE patients and healthy controls and to assess their association with anemia status, classical inflammatory biomarkers and cytokines, disease activity, SLE related factors and treatment received for SLE.

Methods: Seventy-seven patients with SLE according to 2012 SLICC criteria and 80 healthy controls were included.

Background: Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) could reflect interleukin-6 (IL-6) systemic activity since anisocytosis represents the inhibition of erythropoiesis, leaded by the hyperinflammatory background. Our objective was to analyze RDW performance to predict outcome in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Methods: Retrospective observational study including 173 patients with COVID-19-associated ARDS.

Background: Pediatric gastrointestinal motility disorders present significant challenges for diagnosis and management, emphasizing the need for appropriate training in Pediatric Neurogastroenterology and Motility (PNGM). The aim of this survey, part of a comprehensive survey on training in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, was to evaluate training related to PNGM across European training centers.

Method: Standardized questionnaires were collected from training centers through the National Societies Network of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), from June 2016 to December 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a long-lasting inflammatory skin condition primarily affecting hair follicles, with limited treatment options available, mainly centered around the use of Adalimumab.
  • Guselkumab, a monoclonal antibody that targets IL-23, has shown promise as a potential treatment for patients with HS who haven't responded well to existing therapies, even though it's primarily approved for psoriasis.
  • A study involving patients from two university hospitals in Spain aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, dosage, and administration frequency of guselkumab in treating HS, in order to optimize treatment regimens and clarify its role in managing this condition.

Background: The widely recognized burden of liver diseases makes training in pediatric hepatology (PH) imperative. The aim of this survey, which was part of a global survey on training in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition (PGHN) across Europe, was to assess the PH and liver transplantation (LT) infrastructure, staff and training programs in PGHN training centers.

Method: Standardized questionnaires were collected from training centers via the presidents/representatives of the National Societies Network of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) from June 2016 to December 2019.

Serum cytokines to predict systemic lupus erythematosus clinical and serological activity.

Clin Transl Sci

July 2022

Systemic Autoimmune Diseases Unit, Internal Medicine Service, IDIPHIM (University Hospital Puerta de Hierro Research Institute), Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain.

We aimed to explore the role of interleukin (IL)-6, interferon-gamma (IFNγ), IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) as predictors of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) clinical and serological activity, and their correlation with the treatment received. We performed a retrospective analysis of 77 patients with SLE according to the 2012 Systemic Lupus International Collaborative Clinics (SLICC) criteria. The outcomes were serological activity (SA), active disease (AD), complete remission (CR), the low-disease activity state (LDAS), and immunosuppressive treatment.

Differentially Deregulated MicroRNAs as Novel Biomarkers for Neoplastic Progression in Ulcerative Colitis.

Clin Transl Gastroenterol

July 2022

Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), Barcelona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) can develop in patients with long-standing ulcerative colitis (UC), and microRNAs may serve as important biomarkers for tracking this progression.
  • The study examined 96 microRNAs in tissue samples from UC patients and controls, identifying 64 that were deregulated, particularly focusing on three miRNAs—miR-31, -106a, and -135b—that showed significant changes between different stages of the disease.
  • Findings suggest that UC-associated CRCs have unique microRNA expression patterns compared to sporadic CRCs, with some microRNAs potentially indicating early cancer development.

Background: Optimal control of acute postoperative pain and prevention of chronic persistent pain in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remain a challenge.

Methods: A randomized, non-inferiority clinical trial (385 patients) evaluated every hour immediate postoperative pain during 24 h, using a verbal rating 11-point scale for patient self-reporting of pain (VRS11). All patients received subarachnoid anesthesia and were randomly allocated in four groups: single shots femoral (FNB) or adductor canal blocks (ACB), both with dexamethasone (dex) and buprenorphine (bup).

We present the case of a 75-year-old woman with severe aortic stenosis and moderate left ventricular dysfunction, who underwent elective transcatheter aortic valve replacement. After the procedure, the patient developed a left bundle branch block and a long PR interval. For this reason, a dual chamber pacemaker with pacing in the left bundle branch area was implanted.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has enabled a deeper knowledge of the molecular landscape in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), identifying a growing number of targetable molecular alterations in key genes. However, NGS profiling of liquid biopsies risk for false positive and false negative calls and parameters assessing the quality of NGS calls remains lacking. In this study, we have evaluated the positive percent agreement (PPA) between NGS and digital PCR calls when assessing mutation status using 85 plasma samples from 82 -positive NSCLC patients.
