Pancreatic disease and surgery are the main causes of PEI. However, other conditions and upper gastrointestinal surgery can also affect the digestive function of the pancreas.

Multicenter External Validation of the Accuracy of Computed Tomography Criteria for Detecting Thoracolumbar Posterior Ligamentous Complex Injury.

Background And Objective: Recent studies have proposed computed tomography (CT) criteria for posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) injury: disrupted if ≥2 CT findings, indeterminate if single finding, and intact if 0 CT findings. The study aims to validate the CT criteria for PLC injury externally.

Methods: Three level 1 trauma centers enrolled 614 consecutive patients with acute thoracolumbar fractures (T1-L5) who received CT and MRI.

Return to work after parenting in thoracic surgery: a call to action.

Objectives: Women in our modern era are facing considerable challenges in the workplace, particularly in Cardiothoracic Surgery where women are under-represented in leadership and academic roles. Returning to work after parental leave may potentially uncover or exacerbate existing gender biases within the workplace, with important consequences on professional and personal lives. Our goal was to characterize the experiences and the impact of return-to-work after parenting on Thoracic Surgery careers across Europe.

Efficacy and safety of antistaphylococcal penicillin or cephazolin-based combinations versus monotherapy for methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus infective endocarditis: A propensity score analysis of nationwide prospective cohort.

Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of antistaphylococcal penicillin (ASP) or cephazolin-based combinations versus monotherapy in patients with native-valve infective endocarditis (IE) caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA).

Methods: Post-hoc analysis of a multicentre prospective cohort. We include patients from 2008 to 2022 with definite native-valve, left-side IE due to MSSA treated primarily with ASP/cephazolin.

Background: Treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) with delayed-release dimethyl fumarate (DMF) has shown efficacy and safety in clinical trials. However, the occurrence of infectious complications, particularly in elderly patients, remains a concern.

Methods: We present the case of a 63-year-old woman with late-onset MS treated with DMF, who developed a severe primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection.

Background: Sarcopenia is defined as the loss of skeletal muscle mass and is associated with an increased risk or morbidity and mortality in complex surgical patient populations. Its role in complex abdominal wall surgery (AWS) is yet to be determined. The aim of this study is to establish if sarcopenia has an impact on postoperative complications, mortality and hernia recurrence.

Botulinum Toxin Type A (BoNT-A) Use for Post-Stroke Spasticity: A Multicenter Study Using Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning.

We conducted a multicenter and retrospective study to describe the use of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) to treat post-stroke spasticity (PSS). Data were extracted from free-text in electronic health records (EHRs) in five Spanish hospitals. We included adults diagnosed with PSS between January 2015 and December 2019, stratified into BoNT-A-treated and untreated groups.

Anaemia and quality of life in chronic kidney disease: a consensus document from the European Anaemia of CKD Alliance.

Anaemia is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and has a significant impact on quality of life (QoL), work productivity and outcomes. Current management includes oral or intravenous iron and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), to which hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs) have been recently added, increasing the available therapeutic options. In randomised controlled trials, only intravenous iron improved cardiovascular outcome, while some ESAs were associated with increased adverse cardiovascular events.

A phase I safety and efficacy clinical trial of plocabulin and gemcitabine in patients with advanced solid tumors.

Plocabulin (Plo) induces depolymerization of tubulin fibers with disorganization and fragmentation of the microtubule network leading to mitosis. Plo combined with gemcitabine (Gem) showed synergistic anti-tumor activity in preclinical studies. This phase I trial evaluated the safety, pharmacokinetics (PK) and efficacy of Plo 10-min infusion plus Gem on Day 1 and 8 every 3-week in patients with advanced solid tumors.

Methods: A 23-item survey was designed by the ESTS Digital Transformation Working Group to assess the impact of and the need for Digital Transformation in Thoracic Surgery.

How will lung cancer screening and lung nodule management change the diagnostic and surgical lung cancer landscape?

Introduction: Implementation of lung cancer screening, with its subsequent findings, is anticipated to change the current diagnostic and surgical lung cancer landscape. This review aimed to identify and present the most updated expert opinion and discuss relevant evidence regarding the impact of lung cancer screening and lung nodule management on the diagnostic and surgical landscape of lung cancer, as well as summarise points for clinical practice.

Methods: This article is based on relevant lectures and talks delivered during the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons-European Respiratory Society Collaborative Course on Thoracic Oncology (February 2023).

Killip scale reclassification according to lung ultrasound: Killip pLUS.

Aims: The Killip scale remains a fundamental tool for prognostic assessment in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) due to its simplicity and predictive value. Lung ultrasound (LUS) has emerged as a valuable adjunct for diagnosing and predicting outcomes in heart failure (HF) and STEMI patients, even those with subclinical congestion. We created a new classification (Killip pLUS), which reclassifies Killip I and II patients into an intermediate category (Killip I pLUS) based on LUS results.

Assessment of incidental cardiac uptake in bone scintigraphy across Spain: The ECCINGO study.

Aim: Myocardial uptake on bone scintigraphy has become useful for the detection of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of myocardial uptake in patients over 18 years of age with no clinical suspicion of cardiac amyloidosis (CA) who had undergone bone scintigraphy.

Methods And Results: This was an observational, retrospective, multicenter study across 21 Spanish hospitals (September-November 2019).

Pharmacodynamic monitoring by residual gene expression of the nuclear factor of activated T cell-regulated genes in lung transplant recipients and its correlation with tacrolimus blood levels.

Introduction: Trough blood levels (C) of tacrolimus are used to adjust drug dosage, but they do not consistently correlate with clinical outcomes. Measurement of residual gene expression of nuclear factor of activated T cell (NFAT)-regulated genes (NFAT-RGE) has been proposed as a pharmacodynamic biomarker to assess the degree of immunosuppression in certain solid organ transplantations, but little is known regarding lung transplant recipients (LTR). Our primary objective is to correlate tacrolimus blood levels with NFAT-RGE.

Trends in epidemiology, surgical management, and prognosis of infective endocarditis during the XXI century in Spain: A population-based nationwide study.

Background: Few population-based studies have evaluated the epidemiology of infective endocarditis (IE). Changes in population demographics and guidelines on IE may have affected both the incidence and outcomes of IE. Therefore, the aim of our study is to provide contemporary population-based epidemiological data of IE in Spain.
