Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess clinical outcomes and quality of life after PFO closure in patients with previous stroke/TIA of undetermined cause and in patients with other complex PFO-associated clinical conditions.
Methods: Between July 2009 and December 2019 at our University Cardiology Department, 118 consecutive patients underwent a thorough diagnostic work-up including standardized history taking, clinical evaluation, full neurological examination, screening for thrombophilia, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound-Doppler sonography of supra-aortic vessels and 24 h ECG Holter monitoring. Anatomo-morphological evaluation using 2D transthoracic/transesophageal echocardiography (TTE/TEE) color Doppler and functional assessment using contrast TTE (cTTE) in the apical four-chamber view and contrast transcranial Doppler (cTCD) using power M-mode modality were performed to verify the presence, location and amount of right-to-left shunting via PFO or other extracardiac source.

Background And Aims: The monitoring of yearly distributions of HbA measured has been indicated as a reliable indicator of worldwide standardization.
Materials And Methods: Measurements/year of HbA have been collected over three consecutive years in 15 Italian laboratories each using the same analytical method over three years period. HbA distributions, cleaned of replicated measurements, were compared by the overlapping area of the raw probability density functions expressed by coefficient eta (η), and by comparing the reference intervals for the central part of each distribution estimated by the indirect method refineR using the R package "refineR".

Background: Despite the rising number of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), there is a lack of knowledge about the factors that lead to PLWHs being hospitalized in worldwide literature. Our study aimed to investigate PLWH admissions in Sicily (Italy) between January 2010 and September 2021 and to analyze the characteristics and risk factors for in-hospital mortality and differences between Italians and foreigners.
Methods: Data from the hospital discharge forms of all people living with HIV (PLWH) hospitalized in Sicilian hospitals were retrospectively collected.

The combination of atezolizumab and nab-paclitaxel is recommended in the EU as first-line treatment for PD-L1-positive metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC), based on the results of phase III IMpassion130 trial. However, 'real-world' data on this combination are limited. The ANASTASE study (NCT05609903) collected data on atezolizumab plus nab-paclitaxel in PD-L1-positive mTNBC patients enrolled in the Italian Compassionate Use Program.

Background: The recent development and widespread adoption of antegrade dissection re-entry (ADR) techniques have been underlined as one of the antegrade strategies in all worldwide CTO consensus documents. However, historical wire-based ADR experience has suffered from disappointing long-term outcomes.
Aims: Compare technical success, procedural success, and long-term outcome of patients who underwent wire-based ADR technique versus antegrade wiring (AW).

Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome due to a dysregulated host response to infection, which can be caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. Thus, it is crucial to know how the different microorganisms influence the levels of a biomarker. In the last decade, monocyte distribution width (MDW) has emerged as a promising sepsis biomarker, especially in acute settings, such as the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.

The aim of our study was to evaluate whether serum TgAb and anti-thyroid-peroxidase antibody (TPO) positivity was also related to pre-neoplastic histological changes such as papillary-like nuclear features (PLNF) and with the presence of lymphocytic infiltrate (LI) in thyroid surgical specimens. (2) Methods: The study was retrospectively carried out on 70 consecutively recruited patients who underwent thyroidectomy for benign process and whose TgAb and TPOAb values were retrieved from clinical records.

Fosfomycin in intravenous (IV) formulation has re-emerged as a valuable tool in the treatment of multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) infections because of its broad spectrum of antibacterial action and pharmacokinetic characteristics. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate how fosfomycin was used in patients admitted to the Polyclinic of Palermo between January 2017 and July 2022. Clinical indications, therapeutic associations, clinical outcomes, and any side effects were analyzed.
