Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the causes and risk factors for ocular complications following spine surgery, suggesting that these issues are more common than previously thought and primarily arise from mechanisms like ocular compression and internal carotid thromboembolism.
  • - A survey of 28 French orthopedic centers identified 17 patients with visual deficits post-surgery, finding that compression led to unilateral blindness in some cases and ischemic optic neuropathy in others due to head positioning.
  • - To reduce the risk of these complications, the authors recommend changes to the design of headrests and careful handling of head positioning during surgery, particularly for patients with carotid artery issues.
