Literature presents several examples of surgical techniques for the treatment of carpometacarpal osteoarthritis. In our study we used a modified Ceruso's suspended arthroplasty technique. In this study, 53 patients from 2011 to 2017 underwent arthroplasty with trapezius excision and suture suspension between abductor and flexor .

Free wall rupture, cardiac tamponade and miocardial infarction are the most feared. The treatment of perforation remains a challenge of every cath- lab team.

Purpose: In T1 colorectal cancer, the depth is the main factor assessing the degree of submucosal invasion (DSI) to predict the risk of lymph node metastasis (LNM). The width (WSI) and the area of submucosal invasion (ASI) have been suggested as additional parameters to assess the risk of LNM. A review of the literature was undertaken on the correlation between WSI and ASI parameters and the incidence of LNM.

This study aims to analyse the long-term effects (6 months follow-up) of upper limb Robot-assisted Therapy (RT) compared to Traditional physical Therapy (TT), in subacute stroke patients. Although the literature on upper-limb rehabilitation with robots shows increasing evidence of its effectiveness in stroke survivors, the length of time for which the re-learned motor abilities could be maintained is still understudied. A randomized controlled follow-up study was conducted on 48 subacute stroke patients who performed the upper-limb therapy using a planar end-effector robotic system (Experimental Group-EG) or TT (Control Group-CG).

Introduction: Since inflammation alters vascular permeability, including vascular permeability in the lung, we hypothesized that it can be an amplifier of lung congestion in a category of patients at high risk for pulmonary oedema like end stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients.
Objective And Methods: We investigated the effect modification by systemic inflammation (serum CRP) on the relationship between a surrogate of the filling pressure of the LV [left atrial volume indexed to the body surface area (LAVI)] and lung water in a series of 220 ESKD patients. Lung water was quantified by the number of ultrasound B lines (US-B) on lung US.
Background The pericoronary fat attenuation index (pFAI) has emerged as a marker of coronary inflammation, which is measurable from standard coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). It compares well with gold-standard methods for the assessment of coronary inflammation and can predict future cardiovascular events. pFAI could prove invaluable to differentiate an inflammatory from a noninflammatory coronary artery status, helping unravel the mechanisms subtending an event classified as myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) or Tako-Tsubo syndrome (TTS).

The Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD, or simply Fabry Disease, FD; MIM #301500) is a rare X-linked lysosomal storage disorder (Xq22.1) characterized by progressive renal failure, leading to morbidity through cardio- and cerebro-vascular involvement. Despite the classic phenotype, only cardiac involvement (cardiac variant of AFD; MIM 301500) is frequent in about 40% of male and 28% of female AFD patients, as reported by the Fabry Registry ( https://www.

Cor triatriatum is a very rare congenital abnormality, symptomatic during childhood;the non restrictive form is usually diagnosed as an incidental finding. We report the case of a 88 years old man referred to our hospital for elective endovascular repair of an aortic aneurysm; transthoracic cardiac bidimensional echocardiography showed an abnormal mass into the left atrium and a the diagnosis of cor triatriatum was fully made by a three dimensional transesophageal echocardiography. 3D echocardiography is an excellent noninvasive method that provides a rapid bedside diagnosis , without having to use ionizing radiation.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess early poststroke prognostic factors in patients admitted for postacute phase rehabilitation.
Methods: A 1-yr multicenter prospective project was conducted in four Italian regions on 352 patients who were hospitalized after a first stroke and were eligible for postacute rehabilitation. Clinical data were collected in the stroke or acute care units (acute phase), then in rehabilitation units (postacute phase), and, subsequently, after a 6-mo poststroke period (follow-up).

The T3 category of the TNM classification includes over 60% of all rectal tumours and encompasses the greatest variance in cancer-specific end-points than any other T category. The most recent edition of the cancer staging handbook of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) dated 2010 does not divide T3 tumours into subgroups which reflect cancer-specific outcome more sensitively. The original aim of the present study was to review the literature to assess the influence of the degree of extramural extent of T3 rectal cancer on local recurrence and survival.

Purpose: Functional weight-bearing mobilization may improve repair of Achilles tendon rupture (ATR), but the underlying mechanisms and outcome were unknown. We hypothesized that functional weight-bearing mobilization by means of increased metabolism could improve both early and long-term healing.
Methods: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, patients with acute ATR were randomized to either direct post-operative functional weight-bearing mobilization (n = 27) in an orthosis or to non-weight-bearing (n = 29) plaster cast immobilization.

Background: Data on cardiac alterations such as left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, diastolic dysfunction, and lower stroke volume in patients with COPD are discordant. In this study, we investigated whether early structural and functional cardiac changes occur in patients with COPD devoid of manifest cardiovascular disease, and we assessed their associations with clinical and functional features.
Methods: Forty-nine patients with COPD belonging to all Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) classes were enrolled and compared with 36 controls.

Background: In this randomized, controlled, observer-blinded study, we evaluated analgesia provided by transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block after elective total laparoscopic hysterectomy in terms of reduced postoperative morphine consumption as the primary end point.
Methods: Fifty-two patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: patients in group T (TAP, n = 26) received an ultrasound-guided bilateral TAP block with 40 mL of 0.375% levobupivacaine and morphine patient-controlled analgesia, whereas patients in group C (control, n = 26) received morphine patient-controlled analgesia.

Background: Cancer survival in persons with AIDS (PWA) after introduction of antiretroviral therapies remains poorly characterized. The aim is to provide population-based estimates of cancer survival, overall and for the most important cancer types in PWA, and a comparison with persons without AIDS (non-PWA) affected by the same cancer.
Methods: PWA with cancer at AIDS diagnosis or thereafter were individually matched with non-PWA by type of cancer, sex, age, year of diagnosis, area of living, and, for lymphomas, histological subtype.
We report a case-series of seven patients with Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) and at least one concomitant >or=50% coronary stenosis. Each case involves a female patient who presented symptoms and an electrocardiogram compatible with acute coronary syndrome, mild troponin I elevation, a ventriculogram showing left ventricle (LV) apical or midventricular ballooning (classical or variant TTC), an angiogram showing at least one >or=50% stenosis and a cardiac magnetic resonance showing no myocardial late Gadolinium enhancement. Full recovery of normal LV contractility after the event was required to confirm TTC.
