Iron deficiency anemia is among the most frequent causes of disability. Intravenous iron is the quickest way to correct iron deficiency, bypassing the bottleneck of iron intestinal absorption, the only true mechanism of iron balance regulation in human body. Intravenous iron administration is suggested in patients who are refractory/intolerant to oral iron sulfate.

Cardiology Unit, University Hospital P. Giaccone, Department of Excellence of Sciences for Health Promotion and Maternal-Child Care, Internal Medicine and Specialities (ProMISE) "G. D'Alessandro", Palermo, Italy.

Gemcitabine is commonly used for various solid organ malignancies with rarely reported cardiac side effects such as cardiomyopathy. Pazopanib usually can cause arterial hypertension but cases of heart failure have recently been reported. We describe a case of fatal heart failure after treatment with gemcitabine and pazopanib in a 55-year-old female with sarcoma.

Department of Biomedicine, Neurosciences and Advanced Diagnostics, Institute of Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Molecular Medicine and Laboratory Medicine, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy.

Introduction: The 2019 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been characterized as a pandemic, representing a serious global public health emergency. Serological tests have been proposed as reliable tools for detecting Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in infected patients, especially for surveillance or epidemiological purposes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the agreement between the IgM/IgG rapid assays, based on lateral flow immunochromatographic assay, and the fully automated 2019-nCoV IgM and IgG, based on chemiluminescence immunoassay.

September 2020

Department of Health Promotion, Mother and Child Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties "G. D'Alessandro". University Hospital "P.Giaccone", University of Palermo, Piazza delle Cliniche, 2, 90127, Palermo, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial diseases, including Leigh Syndrome French Canadian type (LSFC), are inherited metabolic disorders with a prevalence of 1:5000, caused by LRPPRC gene mutations and more common in specific populations like the French Canadians.
  • A case study details a preterm male Italian child with a novel compound heterozygous LRPPRC mutation, showing symptoms like facial dysmorphisms, severe developmental delays, and abnormal brain imaging, but without common metabolic decompensation episodes.
  • Genetic testing confirmed the compound mutations (one from each parent), highlighting the broader occurrence of LSFC outside traditional populations and emphasizing the need for awareness of these genetic conditions.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Department of Health Promotion, Mother-Child Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties "G. D'Alessandro", University Hospital "P. Giaccone", Via Alfonso Giordano n. 3, 90127, Palermo, Italy.

Background: Hirschsprung disease, the most important congenital colonic dysmotility in children results from neural crest migration, differentiation, proliferation, or apoptosis defects where the rearranged during transfection (RET)-Protooncogene pathway has a central role. Although palatal and retinal anomalies in the context of chromosomopathies and some mono-/oligogenic syndromes are reported associated with Hirschsprung disease the role of inactivating RET mutations in these cases is not clarified.

Case Presentation: We report on a dysmorphic newborn with cleft palate and palatal synechia, who showed intestinal obstruction after 24 h of life.

The Management of Health Hazards Related to Municipal Solid Waste on Fire in Europe: An Environmental Justice Issue?

Int J Environ Res Public Health

September 2020

Health Promotion Sciences, Maternal and Infant Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties (PROMISE) Department, University of Palermo, 90133 Palermo, Italy.

Landfilling should be the last option in an integrated Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management approach. In the European Union (EU), the policy framework to protect the environment and the public health against the impact of health hazards related to urban solid waste management has been consistently implemented in recent decades. A growing interest in the negative impact of fires in waste landfills on the environment and people's health was reported in some European countries.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cor pulmonale is a heart condition affecting the right ventricle due to lung diseases or issues with pulmonary circulation, which can be classified as acute or chronic based on how quickly it develops.
  • - Echocardiography is crucial for diagnosing and managing cor pulmonale due to its non-invasive nature, and it helps monitor right ventricular function over time, assessing patient stability and treatment effectiveness.
  • - The review discusses current echocardiographic evaluation standards for both acute and chronic cor pulmonale and highlights findings related to common underlying conditions causing the disease.

Malignancy course of pituitary adenoma in MEN1 syndrome: Clinical-Neuroradiological signs.

Eur J Radiol Open

June 2020

Section of Radiological Sciences, Department of Biomedicine, Neuroscience and Advanced Diagnostics, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy.

Pituitary carcinomas (PCa) are extremely rare, indistinguishable from pituitary adenomas on histopathological grounds and have a poor prognosis. Most PCa start as PRL or ACTH secreting tumors in males, with relapsing invasive behaviour, refractoriness to medical and radiotherapy and increasing hormonal levels. The presence of distant metastases is still required for the diagnosis of PCa.

Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine Section of Pediatrics and Child Neuropsychiatry, AUO San Marco-Policlinco, University of Catania, 95123 Catania, Italy.

Preterm birth (PTB), defined as parturition prior to 37 weeks of gestation, is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the neonatal population. The incidence and severity of complications of prematurity increase with decreasing gestational age and birthweight. The aim of this review study is to select the most current evidence on the role of oxidative stress in the onset of preterm complication prevention strategies and treatment options with pre-clinical and clinical trials.

Cardiovascular diseases are possible complications of antineoplastic treatment and may lead to premature morbidity and mortality among cancer survivors. A symptom-based follow-up is ineffective, and there are growing evidences that early detection of myocardial damage in patients treated with antineoplastic drugs is the key point to prevent the occurrence of damage and improve the prognosis of these patients. Different techniques have been proposed to monitor cardiac function in oncologic patients such as cardiac imaging (echocardiography, nuclear imaging, and cardiac magnetic resonance) and biomarkers (troponin and natriuretic peptides).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to estimate the total direct health care costs for diagnosing and treating breast cancer in Italy, analyzing costs based on service type and patient characteristics.
  • Using population-based Cancer Registries, the research links patient data with health care service claims, employing a model that breaks down care into initial, ongoing, and final phases.
  • Results reveal that of 49,272 patients, most costs arise from hospitalization, particularly with the initial phase consuming 42% of resources, indicating significant economic impact that could help in resource allocation planning.
