Understanding iron homeostasis in MDS: the role of erythroferrone.

Front Oncol

May 2024

Department of Hematology and Oncology, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Mannheim, Germany.

Myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) are a heterogenous group of clonal stem cell disorders characterized by dysplasia and cytopenia in one or more cell lineages. Anemia is a very common symptom that is often treated with blood transfusions and/or erythropoiesis stimulating factors. Iron overload results from a combination of these factors together with the disease-associated ineffective erythropoiesis, that is seen especially in MDS cases with SF3B1 mutations.

The Urine Light Chain/eGFR Quotient as a Tool to Rule out Cast Nephropathy in Myeloma-Associated Kidney Failure.

Biomedicines

May 2024

Medizinische Klinik A, Klinikum der Stadt Ludwigshafen gGmbH, Bremserstraße 79, 67063 Ludwigshafen, Germany.

Kidney involvement with resulting kidney failure leads to increased mortality in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Cast nephropathy (CN), in particular, if left untreated, quickly leads to kidney failure requiring dialysis and has a very poor prognosis for the affected patient. The gold standard for diagnosing kidney involvement is a kidney biopsy.

Achondroplasia is a lifelong condition requiring lifelong management. There is consensus that infants and children with achondroplasia should be managed by a multidisciplinary team experienced in the condition. However, many people are lost to follow-up after the transition from paediatric to adult care, and there is no standardised approach for management in adults, despite the recent availability of international consensus guidelines.
