Background:  Esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) represents the most common developmental malformation of the upper digestive tract. It is classified into six subtypes according to the classification of Vogt, depending on anatomical variation of this malformation. Around 50% of the patients with EA/TEF present additional anomalies, which often influence, next to the EA/TEF subtype, the overall prognosis of EA/TEF newborns.

Liver sinusoidal endothelial cell cross-priming is supported by CD4 T cell-derived IL-2.

J Hepatol

May 2017

Institute of Molecular Immunology and Experimental Oncology, Klinikum München rechts der Isar, Technische Universität München, Germany. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) are prominent liver-resident antigen (cross-)presenting cells. LSEC cross-priming of naïve CD8 T cells does not require CD4 T cell help in contrast to priming by dendritic cells (DC) but leads to the formation of memory T cells that is preceded by transient Granzyme B (GzmB) expression. Here we provide evidence for a so far unrecognized CD4 T helper cell function in LSEC-induced CD8 T cell activation.

There has been considerable progress in treating malignant melanoma over the last few years. The immune-checkpoint-inhibitors nivolumab and pembrolizumab have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2014 for the therapy of metastatic melanoma. Anti-programmed cell death-1-blocking antibodies are known to cause immune-related adverse events.

Walking away from depression-motor activity increases ratings of mood and incentive drive in patients with major depression.

Psychiatry Res

January 2017

Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Bonn, Germany; Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Mainz, Germany; Departments of Psychiatry and Mental Health, The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA. Electronic address:

Reduced motor activity is associated with depression. Lewinsohn's cognitive behavioural model of depression assumes a lack of positive experience due to a reduced level of activity as a key aspect of depression. The acute relationship between motor activity and mood as well as between motor activity and incentive drive (the motivation to engage in activities) is unknown.

Department of Gynecology, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany; Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University of Munich, Munich, Germany; Department of Gynecology, University of Munich (LMU), Munich, Germany.

Aim Of The Study: A tumour-free pathological resection margin of ≥8 mm is considered state-of-the-art. Available evidence is based on heterogeneous cohorts. This study was designed to clarify the relevance of the resection margin for loco-regional control in vulvar cancer.

Purpose: This study compares early complications after cystectomy and urinary diversion (UD) stratified by the surgical focus and case load of two different department chairpersons in a single institution in two time periods. Creating clear data about complications that can affect the quality of life is an important tool for patients to decide whether and where to perform this extensive surgery.

Hypothesis: A team of surgeons with a clear focus on pelvic surgery leads to lower complication rates in radical cystectomy.

Practicing physicians have requested efficacy and safety data for belimumab, when used with specific systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) medications. This was a post hoc analysis of pooled efficacy and safety data from patients who received belimumab 10 mg/kg plus standard of care (SoC) or placebo (SoC) in two Phase III, randomized trials, BLISS-52 and BLISS-76. Patients were categorized into four groups based on baseline concomitant medication usage: steroids only; antimalarials (AM) only; steroids + AM; or steroids + AM + immunosuppressants (IS).

Purpose: To assess the feasibility, safety and usefulness of augmented reality-assisted urological surgery using smartglass (SG).

Methods: Seven urological surgeons (3 board urologists and 4 urology residents) performed augmented reality-assisted urological surgery using SG for 10 different types of operations and a total of 31 urological operations. Feasibility was assessed using technical metadata (number of photographs taken/number of videos recorded/video time recorded) and structured interviews with the urologists on their use of SG.

Sex differences in volume overload in skinned fibers.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

October 2016

Department of Thoracic, Cardiac and Thoracic Vascular Surgery, Medical Centre of the University Hospital Würzburg, Oberdürrbacherstrasse 6, 97080, Würzburg, Germany.

Background: The impact of sex on cardiac morphology and function in chronic volume overload has been described in detail. However, the relation between sex and contractile properties at the actin-myosin level has not been well defined. Therefore, we evaluated the influence of sex on the contractile capacities of patients with chronic volume overload.

Background: Although specific psychological disorders in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) have not been identified, studies suggest that CRPS patients may have increased rates of traumatic life events. Because these events do not always lead to apparent psychological symptoms, we systematically screened CRPS patients for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to determine if PTSD could be a risk factor for CRPS.

Methods: Consecutive CRPS patients referred to two university hospital centres (University of Erlangen, UMC Mainz) between December 2011 and April 2013 were prospectively examined using a diagnostic PTSD instrument (Post-traumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale (PDS).

Objective: Aneurysm surgery demands precise spatial understanding of the vascular anatomy and its surroundings. We report on a decade of experience planning clipping procedures preoperatively in a virtual reality (VR) workstation and present outcomes with respect to mortality, morbidity, and aneurysm occlusion rate.

Methods: Between 2006 and 2015, the clipping of 115 intracranial aneurysms in 105 patients was preoperatively planned with the Dextroscope, a stereoscopic, patient-specific VR environment.

Background: Transvaginal mesh repair has been discredited due to high complications rates in the past years. Therefore, we evaluated the quality of life (QoL) and complication rates after transvaginal mesh (TVM) repair for pelvic organ prolapse (POP).

Methods: A total of 148 women who underwent TVM repair for symptomatic POP were retrospectively enrolled.

In the randomized, open-label, phase II PALOMA-1/TRIO-18 trial, palbociclib in combination with letrozole improved progression-free survival (PFS) compared with letrozole alone as first-line treatment of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative, advanced breast cancer (20.2 months versus 10.

A literature on systematic treatment protocols for patients after resuscitation for cardiac arrest is lacking. We evaluated a systematic protocol, including ECG, echocardiogram, urgent cardiac catheterisation ("STEMI-like" workflow), CT scans, laboratory findings, IABP, hypothermia, and cMRI, prospectively over 5 years. The primary endpoint was the Cerebral Performance Category Scale (CPCS).
