Background: Coronary bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) were developed to overcome the limitations of standard metallic stents, especially to address late events after percutaneous coronary interventions. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BRS, compared with Everolimus-eluting stents (EES), using the data available from randomized trials, with a focus on long-term outcomes.

Methods: Published randomized trials comparing BRS to EES for the treatment of coronary artery disease were searched for within PubMed, Cochrane Library and Scopus electronic databases up to April 4th 2017.

Diagnosis of recurrent venous thromboembolism.

Thromb Res

March 2018

Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis, University Hospital Mainz, Mainz, Germany; Department of Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands. Electronic address:

The diagnostic management of suspected recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) is challenging for four main reasons. First, clinical decision rules are less useful to identity patients with a low pre-test probability. Second, the diagnostic performance of D-dimer tests is decreased.

Background: Heart exposure to ionizing irradiation can cause ischaemic heart disease. The partial heart volume receiving ≥5 Gy (heartV5) was supposed to be an independent prognostic factor for survival after radiochemotherapy for locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). But validation of the latter hypothesis is needed under the concurrent risks of lung cancer patients.

Adiponectin is one of the most abundant adipokines secreted from adipose tissue. It acts as an endogenous insulin sensitizer and plasma concentrations are inversely correlated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. A decrease in plasma adiponectin levels normally indicates increased hormonal activity of the visceral lipid tissue, which is associated with decreased insulin sensitivity.

Chest pain units are defined as organizational short stay units with specific management protocols designed to facilitate and optimize the diagnosis of patients presenting with chest pain in the emergency department. The present document is intended to standardize and facilitate the installation of chest pain units nearby to the emergency department or as an integral part of the emergency department. Recommendations on organizational structure, physical and technical requirements and on disease management are presented.

Objective: Studies on the prognostic reliability of the Union for International Cancer Control tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) staging system for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) predominantly focus on clear-cell RCC. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether the oncological prognosis of surgically treated papillary RCC (papRCC) patients is reliably given by the current TNM system, by analyzing the largest database reported to date.

Materials And Methods: Data on 2325 papRCC patients who underwent surgical treatment in 1984- 2015 were collated from 17 international centers (median follow-up 47 months).

Objectives: The influence of blood group antigens on cancerogenesis is shown for distinct tumor types, yet the impact of Rhesus blood group antigens in lung cancer is not clarified.

Materials And Methods: To investigate the impact of Rhesus blood groups a non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) collective (n = 1047) was analyzed retrospectively. Using a second cohort of n = 340 primarily operated stage I-III NSCLC patients, we evaluated immunohistochemistry of CD47-antibody stained tissue samples in correlation to histopathologic subtype and Rhesus blood group.

Background: The aim of this 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) follow-up study was to investigate longitudinal changes in aortic hemodynamics in adolescent patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS).

Methods: 4D flow CMR for the assessment of in-vivo 3D blood flow with full coverage of the thoracic aorta was performed twice (baseline scan t1/follow-up scan t2) in 19 adolescent MFS patients (age at t1: 12.7 ± 3.

The Antiproliferative Role of Lanreotide in Controlling Growth of Neuroendocrine Tumors: A Systematic Review.

Oncologist

March 2017

Cancer Imaging & Neuroendocrine Service & Molecular Imaging and Targeted Therapeutics Laboratory, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, St. Andrews Place, East Melbourne, Australia.

Background: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a heterogeneous group of tumors, with >50% of cases involving the gastrointestinal system or pancreas. Somatostatin analogs (SSAs) are used for treating NET-related secretory syndromes and, more recently, for their antiproliferative effects. We conducted a systematic review of published literature on the antiproliferative efficacy and safety of the SSA lanreotide Autogel in the management of NETs to gain a fuller understanding of the evidence and identify future areas of research.

Background: The Nod-like receptor NACHT, LRR, and PYD domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) and Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) are protagonists in innate and adaptive immunity, respectively. NLRP3 senses exogenous and endogenous insults, leading to inflammasome activation, which occurs spontaneously in patients with Muckle-Wells syndrome; BTK mutations cause the genetic immunodeficiency X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA). However, to date, few proteins that regulate NLRP3 inflammasome activity in human primary immune cells have been identified, and clinically promising pharmacologic targeting strategies remain elusive.

Background: The anti-programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors pembrolizumab and nivolumab alone or in combination with ipilimumab have shown improved objective response rates and progression-free survival compared to ipilimumab only in advanced melanoma patients. Anti-PD-1 therapy demonstrated nearly equal clinical efficacy in patients who had progressed after ipilimumab or were treatment-naïve. However, only limited evidence exists regarding the efficacy of ipilimumab alone or in combination with nivolumab after treatment failure to anti-PD-therapy.

Background: Most data on chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) originate from highly selected patient populations treated at specialized centres. Little is known about CSU patient characteristics and the burden of CSU in routine clinical practice. AWARE (A World-wide Antihistamine-Refractory chronic urticaria patient Evaluation) is an ongoing global study designed to assess chronic urticaria in the real-life setting.

An ovarian mass after breast cancer: Metachronous carcinoma or metastasis? A case report.

Int J Surg Case Rep

December 2016

Gynecological Oncology Unit, Third Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, General University Hospital "Attikon", University of Athens, Athens, Greece.

Introduction: Differentiating between primary and secondary ovarian cancer can be a difficult task. In hereditary conditions breast malignancies and primary ovarian cancer often coexist.

Presentation Of Case: We present a 45-year-old patient with an ovarian mass two years after the diagnosis of a lobular, triple negative breast carcinoma.

Objective: To report our experience of radical resection of secondary cancers after ureterosigmoidostomy. Ureterosigmoidostomy was the most common continent urinary diversion before the era of continent cutaneous diversion and neobladders, specifically in children. When performed for bladder exstrophy, patients will live with this kind of diversion for quite a long time.
