The objective of this study was to investigate venous collapse (VC) related to venous drainage during the use of an extracorporeal life support circuit. A mock circulation was built containing a centrifugal pump and a collapsible vena cava model to simulate VC under controlled conditions. Animal experiments were performed for in vivo verification.

Objective: To study the effect of warm ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) on local perfusion and leukocyte-vessel wall interactions in vivo in all small bowel layers, and to quantify small bowel tissue injury histologically and by measuring intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) release from the enterocytes.
Summary Background Data: Gut injury as a result of I/R plays a pivotal role in a variety of clinical conditions, such as small bowel transplantation, heart or aortic surgery, and (septic) shock. The precise mechanism behind I/R injury and the role of microvascular changes remain unclear.

In this article it is shown how a cost accounting system based on DRGs can be valuable in determining changes in clinical practice and explaining alterations in expenditure patterns from one period to another. A cost-variance analysis is performed using data from the orthopedic department from the fiscal years 1993 and 1994. Differences between predicted and observed cost for medical care, such as diagnostic procedures, therapeutic procedures and nursing care are analyzed into different components: changes in patient volume, case-mix differences, changes in resource use and variations in cost per procedure.

In this study, we demonstrated the clonal origin of trisomy for chromosome 7 in epithelial cells of colon neoplasia. By using the double-target fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique in frozen tissue sections that were also immunostained for keratin and vimentin, ratio analysis of FISH signals for chromosomes 7 and 17 could be performed in epithelial (cytokeratin-positive) or stromal (vimentin-positive) areas. The data demonstrated that trisomy for chromosome 7 is found exclusively in the epithelial compartments and not in the stroma of colon adenocarcinoma.
