Rhinosinusitis and its impact on quality of life in children.

Br J Hosp Med (Lond)

March 2022

Ear Nose and Throat and Allergy Department, University Hospital Lewisham, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, London, UK.

Rhinitis and rhinosinusitis are common conditions which have a significant burden on healthcare services and can lead to reduced productivity in patients across the entire age spectrum. Three disease-specific quality of life tools were analysed in hospital and community settings to explore prevalence, disease characteristics and financial costs to sufferers, and to compare these aspects between cohorts (young children, young adult and adults). These tools were Modified Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-20 (MSNOT-20) questionnaire for adults, MSNOT-20 Young Persons Questionnaire (MSYPQ) for 11-16-year-olds and Sami's Rhinosinusitis Diagnosis and Impact questionnaire for 5-10-year-olds.

Is there a role for transperineal ultrasound imaging of the anal sphincter immediately after primary repair of third degree tears?

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

April 2022

Urogynaecology & Pelvic Floor Reconstruction Unit, Croydon University Hospital, Surrey, UK; St George's University of London, UK. Electronic address:

Objective: When obstetric anal sphincter injuries are identified, it is crucial that the defects are repaired appropriately to achieve a better outcome. Although the presence of an intact anal sphincter is not the sole mechanism for maintaining continence, and not all women with an anal sphincter defect are symptomatic, there is an association between sphincter defects and anal incontinence. Our aim was to evaluate whether transperineal ultrasound (TPUS) is useful in assessing anal sphincter integrity immediately following primary repair of obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIs).

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disease across the globe but children seem to be much less affected than adults. Coincidentally with the first wave of the pandemic, a cluster of children with fever, hyperinflammation and shock were identified, and this was first described as paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Patients with this novel condition were transferred to tertiary centres for management, increasing the pressure in these hospitals that were already extremely busy.

Background: Both pathogenic bacteria and viruses are frequently detected in the nasopharynx (NP) of children in the absence of acute respiratory infection (ARI) symptoms. The aim of this study was to estimate the aetiological fractions for ARI hospitalisation in children for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza virus and to determine whether detection of specific respiratory pathogens on NP samples was associated with ARI hospitalisation.

Methods: 349 children up to 5 years of age hospitalised for ARI (following a symptom-based case definition) and 306 hospital controls were prospectively enrolled in 16 centres across seven European Union countries between 2016 and 2019.

J Voice

November 2023

Health & Life Sciences, Oxford Institute of Nursing, Midwifery & Allied Health Research, Jack Straws Lane, Oxford, OX3 0FL, England.

Unlabelled: Benign vocal fold lesions cause dysphonia by preventing vocal fold closure, causing irregular vibration and increasing compensatory muscle tension. Voice therapy delivered in addition to phonosurgery may improve voice and quality of life outcomes but the evidence base is lacking and what constitutes voice therapy for this population is not defined. The purpose of this systematic review is to critically evaluate the evidence for pre and post-operative voice therapy to inform the development of an evidence based intervention.
