Vascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Spain. Hypercholesterolemia is not only a cardiovascular risk factor, but also underlies the etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Therefore, reducing LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) to the goals recommended by clinical practice guidelines, is essential to decrease the risk of vascular complications.

Background: A randomized, placebo-controlled phase III study (AB10015) previously demonstrated that orally administered masitinib (4.5 mg/kg/day) slowed rate of functional decline, with acceptable safety, in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients having an ALS Functional Rating Scale-revised (ALSFRS-R) progression rate from disease onset to baseline of <1.1 points/month.

Ascorbic acid (AA) is a potent oxygen-free radical scavenger. We hypothesized that treating severe burn patients with high doses of AA (HDAA) can reduce fluid resuscitation requirements and prevent organ dysfunction. We performed a unicentric, retrospective case-control study of 75 burn patients: 25 patients admitted from 2018 to 2019 with more than 30% Total Surface Body Surface Area (TSBA) burned who received HDAA (66 mg/kg/h as soon as possible after admission until 36 h after injury), and 50 patients admitted from 2014 to 2017 with similar Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI)/Baux scores who were treated with the same protocol but did not receive HDAA.

Introduction: International travellers contribute to the rapid spread of Zika virus (ZIKV) and its sentinel identification globally. We describe ZIKV infections among international travellers seen at GeoSentinel sites with a focus on ZIKV acquired in the Americas and the Caribbean, describe countries of exposure and traveller characteristics, and assess ZIKV diagnostic testing by site.
Methods: Records with an international travel-related diagnosis of confirmed or probable ZIKV from January 2012 through December 2019 reported to GeoSentinel with a recorded illness onset date were included to show reported cases over time.

Objective: To describe the tolerability and rate of nifurtimox discontinuation when administered as a second-line treatment to patients with previous treatment interruptions due to adverse reactions with benznidazole.
Methods: We studied a prospective cohort study of adult patients with chronic Chagas disease in a referral centre in Spain treated from July 2007 to July 2017. We analysed the tolerability profile and treatment interruption rate due to adverse reactions (ARs) to nifurtimox in patients previously incompletely treated (less than 30 days) with benznidazole due to ARs.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is an important complication in burn patients. Recently, it has been recommended that hydroxyethyl starch (HES) be avoided in burn patients because it increases the incidence of AKI. Our purpose was to study incidence of AKI in critically ill burn patients resuscitated with Ringer's solution and supplements of HES.

The p21/CDKN1A protein has been described in vitro as well as in a small subset of patients as a restriction factor for HIV infection. We evaluated p21/CDKN1A mRNA expression on CD4(+) T cells from HIV-infected individuals with two outcomes (18 elite controllers and 28 viremic progressors). Our results show broad interindividual variation in this factor, which is unrelated to the patient's phenotype.
