February 2024

Division of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism, Department of Pediatrics, University Children's Hospital, Inselspital, University of Bern, 3010 Bern, Switzerland.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may impact the development of prostate cancer (PCa) by altering the steroid metabolism. Although their exact mechanism of action in controlling tumor growth is not known, EDCs may inhibit steroidogenic enzymes such as CYP17A1 or CYP19A1 which are involved in the production of androgens or estrogens. High levels of circulating androgens are linked to PCa in men and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in women.

Adrenal Abcg1 Controls Cholesterol Flux and Steroidogenesis.

Endocrinology

January 2024

Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism, Department of Pediatrics, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, Bern 3010, Switzerland.

Cholesterol is the precursor of all steroids, but how cholesterol flux is controlled in steroidogenic tissues is poorly understood. The cholesterol exporter ABCG1 is an essential component of the reverse cholesterol pathway and its global inactivation results in neutral lipid redistribution to tissue macrophages. The function of ABCG1 in steroidogenic tissues, however, has not been explored.

The prediction of stroke outcome is challenging due to the high inter-individual variability in stroke patients. We recently suggested the adaptation of the concept of brain reserve (BR) to improve the prediction of stroke outcome. This concept was initially developed alongside the one for the cognitive reserve for neurodegeneration and forms a valuable theoretical framework to capture high inter-individual variability in stroke patients.

Article Synopsis
  • International guidelines suggest keeping body temperature below 37.8 °C for unconscious patients after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), but targeting 33 °C may yield better results for patients with a nonshockable rhythm.
  • The study aimed to determine if inducing hypothermia at 33 °C leads to higher survival rates and better functional outcomes compared to maintaining normal body temperature (normothermia).
  • Data was gathered from two clinical trials involving unconscious OHCA patients with nonshockable rhythms, comparing those treated with hypothermia versus normothermia for a minimum of 24 hours, analyzing various factors influencing outcomes.*
