Electronic address:

After a number of failed drug studies on Alzheimer's disease (AD) over the past decade, clinical trials of AD started to show encouraging results and were approved or pending approval for clinical use. However, controversies on the clinically meaningful benefits and risks of brain edema and microhemorrhages have reminded us to think further about monitoring treatment and developing new drug targets. The goal of this review is to find insights from clinical trials that aimed at two key pathological features of AD, i.

Losing either type of cochlear sensory hair cells leads to hearing impairment. Inner hair cells act as primary mechanoelectrical transducers, while outer hair cells enhance sound-induced vibrations within the organ of Corti. Established inner ear damage models, such as systemic administration of ototoxic aminoglycosides, yield inconsistent and variable hair cell death in mice.

Understanding the complex pathologies associated with hearing loss is a significant motivation for conducting inner ear research. Lifelong exposure to loud noise, ototoxic drugs, genetic diversity, sex, and aging collectively contribute to human hearing loss. Replicating this pathology in research animals is challenging because hearing impairment has varied causes and different manifestations.

Arch Pediatr

October 2023

Department of Clinical Neurophysiology-Sleep Disorders Unit, University of Lille, University Hospital of Lille, and U1172 - LilNCog - Lille Neurosciences & Cognition, Lille, 59000, France.

This document is the outcome of a group of experts brought together at the request of the French Society of Sleep Research and Medicine to provide recommendations for the management of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome type 1 (OSA) in children. The recommendations are based on shared experience and published literature. OSA is suspected when several nighttime respiratory symptoms related to upper airway obstruction are identified on clinical history taking.

Article Synopsis
  • Predicting difficult clots during mechanical thrombectomy for acute stroke is challenging due to unclear definitions of what constitutes a "challenging clot."
  • Experts participated in a modified DELPHI technique survey to identify specific features of these clots, reaching consensus on several defining characteristics.
  • Eight key features that indicate a challenging clot include its color, stiffness, adherence, and resistance, highlighting the need for further research to improve identification before treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study compares people with SOD1-related ALS to those without SOD1 variants, using extensive data from both groups to analyze age at symptom onset and survival time.
  • * Findings indicate that certain SOD1 variants are tied to younger ages of onset and unique survival patterns, suggesting that onset and survival can be independent in SOD1-ALS cases, highlighting the need for further research on rare variants.

Service de Chirurgie Orale, Department of Oral Surgery, CHU Nîmes, CHRU de Nîmes - Hôpital Universitaire Carémeau, University of Montpellier, Place du Professeur Debré, 30029, Nîmes Cedex 9, France.

Background: Although wisdom-tooth extraction is a routine intervention, the postoperative period remains marked by local inflammation classically manifesting as pain, edema and trismus. Furthermore, there is no consensus on the best operative techniques, particularly for the mucosal closure stage on impacted mandibular wisdom teeth.

Methods: This parallel, randomized, non-blinded study compared pain following removal of impacted third molars, with and without sutures.

Introduction: No evidence exists about the impact of air pollution reduction on incidence of dementia. The aim of this study was to quantify how air quality improvement leads to dementia-incidence benefits.

Methods: In the French Three-City cohort (12 years of follow-up), we used parametric g-computation to quantify the expected number of prevented dementia cases under different hypothetical interventions with particulate matter measuring <2.

Objective: Intra-procedural WEB device migration is a scarcely reported complication that necessitates prompt intervention.

Case Presentation: Endovascular treatment of two broad necked flow-related aneurysms was planned aided by WEB-SL (Woven EndoBridge-single layer) devices in a 71-year-old female with known left temporal arteriovenous malformation. Inadvertent distal migration occurred while performing a control angiogram with an automated iodine injector.

The G4C2-repeat expansion in C9orf72 is the most common cause of frontotemporal dementia and of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The variability of age at onset and phenotypic presentations is a hallmark of C9orf72 disease. In this study, we aimed to identify modifying factors of disease onset in C9orf72 carriers using a family-based approach, in pairs of C9orf72 carrier relatives with concordant or discordant age at onset.

Importance: Mechanical thrombectomy using a stent retriever or contact aspiration is widely used for treatment of patients with acute ischemic stroke due to anterior circulation large vessel occlusion, but the additional benefit of combining contact aspiration with stent retriever is uncertain.

Objective: To determine whether mechanical thrombectomy for treatment of anterior circulation large vessel occlusion stroke with initial contact aspiration and stent retriever combined results in better final angiographic outcome than with standard stent retriever alone.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This trial was a multicenter randomized, open-label, blinded end point evaluation that enrolled 408 patients from October 16, 2017, to May 29, 2018, in 11 French comprehensive stroke centers, with a 12-month outcome follow-up.

We report comparative results, over three months, of the impact of SARS-CoV2 in our patients injected with botulinum toxin for functional purposes, compared to the general population. Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) is known to block acetylcholine (ACh) as well as many other neuroreceptors and neuromodulators. The recent mention of a potential protective effect of nicotine in COVID 19, by blocking ACh, attracted our attention and guided the present study.

Introduction: There remains no standard imaging method that allows computer-assisted surgery of the cochlea in real time. However, recent evidence suggests that high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) could permit real-time visualization of cochlear architecture. Registration with an imaging modality that suffers neither attenuation nor conical deformation could reveal useful anatomical landmarks to surgeons.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

July 2021

From the Departments of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery (A.-L.F., M.A., A.K., M.M., F.V.)

Background And Purpose: Previous studies have demonstrated the usefulness of non-EPI DWI for detection of residual cholesteatoma. However, limited data are available to determine the suitable duration of imaging follow-up after a first MR imaging with normal findings has been obtained. The present study aimed to determine the optimal duration of non-EPI DWI follow-up for residual cholesteatoma.

Cochlear implantation consists in electrically stimulating the auditory nerve by inserting an electrode array inside the cochlea, a bony structure of the inner ear. In the absence of any visual feedback, the insertion results in many cases of damages of the internal structures. This paper presents a feasibility study on intraoperative imaging and identification of cochlear structures with high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS).
