Objectives: To assess the efficacy of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) and sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, administered without metformin on cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes patients.

Methods: A systematic review was performed according to Cochrane's methodological standards. We included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on adult type 2 diabetes patients, assessing the efficacy of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP1-RAs compared to other glucose-lowering drugs and/or RCTs that presented data of a subgroup of type 2 diabetes patients without metformin use at baseline.

Background: Patients with cancer have been shown to have a higher risk of clinical severity and mortality compared to non-cancer patients with COVID-19. Patients with hematologic malignancies typically are known to have higher levels of immunosuppression and may develop more severe respiratory viral infections than patients with solid tumors. Data on COVID-19 in patients with hematologic malignancies are limited.

: Patient safety is an activity to mitigate preventable patient harm that may occur during the delivery of medical care. The European Board of Anaesthesiology (EBA)/European Union of Medical Specialists had previously published safety recommendations on minimal monitoring and postanaesthesia care, but with the growing public and professional interest it was decided to produce a much more encompassing document. The EBA and the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) published a consensus on what needs to be done/achieved for improvement of peri-operative patient safety.

Background: Inflammation from skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema-like atopic dermatitis (AD) and hand eczema (HE) and following dermatological procedures (post-acts) can result in intense itching and cutaneous pain. Dermo-cosmetics containing plant extracts have been shown to reduce or alleviate these symptoms.

Objectives: Assessment of the tolerability and efficacy of a spray containing Rhealba\xAE Oat plantlets and Uncaria tomentosa extracts in adults and children with inflammatory skin diseases and after dermatological procedures.

Surgical site infection in hip arthroplasty in a 10-year follow-up prospective study: Risk and factors associated.

Am J Infect Control

December 2020

Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, University Hospital Fundación Alcorcón, Madrid, Spain; Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, University Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain.

Background: The increased demand for hip arthroplasty means a growing number of postsurgical complications. This study aims to assess the risk of surgical site infection (SSI) in a teaching hospital; develop regional, national and international external comparisons; and evaluate SSI-related risk factors, particularly according to the timing of surgery (urgent/unplanned or elective).

Methods: Prospective cohort study from January 2008 to December 2018.

Objectives: To test the hypothesis that allopurinol reduces the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in hyperuricemic patients and to assess whether the effect is dependent on dose, duration and serum uric acid (SUA) level attained after treatment.

Methods: Nested case-control study over the period 2002-2015. From a cohort of patients aged 40-99 years old, we identified incident AMI cases and randomly selected five controls per case, matched for exact age, sex and index date.

Background: Coping with cancer and the oncologist-patient relationship can vary depending on the patient's age. Our aim is to examine and compare young and elderly adults with non-metastatic, resected cancer.

Methods: Two groups of patients were selected, young (< 40 years) and elderly (> 70) with a diagnosis of non-metastatic, resected cancer requiring adjuvant chemotherapy from a pre-exiting, national database (NEOCOPING Study).

Background: Malaria is currently the most important human parasitic disease in the world responsible for high morbidity and mortality. Appropriate diagnostic methods are essential for early detection. Microscopy examination remains the gold standard, although molecular techniques have higher sensitivity and are very useful in cases of low parasitaemia and mixed infections.

Surgical site infection incidence and risk factors in knee arthroplasty: A 9-year prospective cohort study at a university teaching hospital in Spain.

Am J Infect Control

December 2018

Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. University Hospital Fundación Alcorcón, Madrid, Spain; Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, University Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain.

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the complications posed by knee replacement surgery. Hospital-based infection surveillance systems may provide indicators of improvement and allow the characterization of risk factors critical to reduce infection. The aims of this study were to compare the incidence of SSI in our center with rates in the Madrid Region, Spain, and the United States, and to evaluate any possible SSI-related risk factor in knee replacement surgery.

Digital dermoscopy (DD) follow up is a useful strategy for monitoring patients at high risk of melanoma. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a valuable second-level examination after dermoscopy for the evaluation of difficult to diagnose lesions. The aim of this study was to assess the value of RCM in routine DD monitoring of patients at high risk of melanoma.

A systematic review of the use of health services by immigrants and native populations.

Public Health Rev

December 2016

Red de Investigación en Servicios de Salud y Enfermedades Crónicas, Madrid, Spain.

Background: Changes in migration patterns that have occurred in recent decades, both quantitative, with an increase in the number of immigrants, and qualitative, due to different causes of migration (work, family reunification, asylum seekers and refugees) require constant u pdating of the analysis of how immigrants access health services. Understanding of the existence of changes in use patterns is necessary to adapt health services to the new socio-demographic reality. The aim of this study is to describe the scientific evidence that assess the differences in the use of health services between immigrant and native populations.

Currently immunosuppressive and biological agents are used in a more extensive and earlier way in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatic or dermatologic diseases. Although these drugs have shown a significant clinical benefit, the safety of these treatments is a challenge. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivations have been reported widely, even including liver failure and death, and it represents a deep concern in these patients.

Neurology Department, Hospital Clínico San Carlos, Complutense University, Madrid, Spain.

Introduction: The infratrochlear nerve supplies the medial aspect of the upper eyelid, the superolateral aspect of the nose and the lacrimal caruncle. This nerve may contribute to the pain stemming from the trochlea, but infratrochlear neuralgia has not been identified as a specific cause of pain.

Methods: Over a 10-year period we have been recruiting patients with pain in the internal angle of the orbit that did not show features of trochlear pain.

Trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias include cluster headache, paroxysmal hemicrania, and short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection, tearing, and rhinorrhea (SUNCT). Conventional pharmacological therapy can be successful in the majority of trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias patients. Most cluster headache attacks respond to 100% oxygen inhalation, or 6 mg subcutaneous sumatriptan.
