Interest in finding efficient ways to remove penicillin allergy alerts has grown as a result of awareness of the considerable excess of false-negative diagnoses in patients with penicillin allergy labels (90%-95%), the poorer course with non-ß-lactam antibiotics, the increase in bacterial resistance, and the fact that these problems can affect up to 20% of the population in some countries. The strategies proposed have generated many publications in countries where the number of allergists to conduct such studies is low. In many cases where delabeling is performed, the risk of ß-lactam allergy is low, and a single penicillin challenge is sufficient to delabel the alert.

Background: Hip fractures are prevalent among older people, often leading to reduced mobility, muscle loss, and bone density decline. Malnutrition exacerbates the prognosis post surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a 12-week regimen of a high-calorie, high-protein oral supplement with β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HC-HP-HMB-ONS) on nutritional status, daily activities, and compliance in malnourished or at-risk older patients with hip fractures receiving standard care.

Conflicting results about the association of calcium supplements (CS) with ischemic stroke (IS) have been reported. We tested this hypothesis by differentiating between CS alone (CaM) and CS with vitamin D (CaD) and between cardioembolic and non-cardioembolic IS. We examined the potential interaction with oral bisphosphonates (oBs).

Introduction: The drug allergy alert system reduces the frequency of adverse drug events, although it is subjected to collateral effects, since 80-90% of alerts are not real, and a large percentage of alerts are overridden (46.2-96.2%).

Posttranslational modifications of epigenetic modifiers provide a flexible and timely mechanism for rapid adaptations to the dynamic environment of cancer cells. SIRT1 is an NAD-dependent epigenetic modifier whose activity is classically associated with healthy aging and longevity, but its function in cancer is not well understood. Here, we reveal that 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)D calcitriol), the active metabolite of vitamin D (VD), promotes SIRT1 activation through auto-deacetylation in human colon carcinoma cells, and identify lysine 610 as an essential driver of SIRT1 activity.

Bisphosphonates have been reported to increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. Therefore, it is conceivable that they may increase the risk of cardioembolic ischemic stroke (IS). However, most epidemiological studies carried out thus far have not shown an increased risk of IS, though none separated by the main pathophysiologic IS subtype (cardioembolic and non-cardioembolic) which may be crucial.

Kinesiology tape versus non-standardized tape in the treatment of balance in non-operated anterior cruciate ligament rupture patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Somatosens Mot Res

December 2024

Motion Analysis, Ergonomics, Biomechanics and Motor Control Laboratory, Department of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation, and Physical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Rey Juan Carlos University, Alcorcon, Spain.

Purpose/aim: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are the most common traumatic ligament injuries of the knee, which course with impaired balance. The aim of the present study was to analyse the effect of kinesiology tape on balance in subjects with non-operated anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

Materials And Methods: 36 subjects were randomly assigned to the kinesiology tape group (KT = 20) and the non-standardized tape group (NST = 16).

Tools to predict surges in cases and hospitalizations during the COVID-19 pandemic may help guide public health decisions. Low cycle threshold (CT) counts may indicate greater SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in the respiratory tract, and thereby may be used as a surrogate marker of enhanced viral transmission. Several population studies have found an association between the oscillations in the mean CT over time and the evolution of the pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the long-term outcomes of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma who achieved a complete response to the TKI sunitinib, revealing little known prior information about this group.
  • Data was collected from a registry of 62 patients treated in Spain between 2007 and 2018, with most patients having clear cell histology and previously undergoing nephrectomy.
  • Results show that 75% of patients maintained complete response status after 10 years, indicating durable responses across different prognosis groups and metastasis sites.

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine and Baricitinib for Patients at High Risk of Severe Coronavirus Disease 2019: The PANCOVID Randomized Clinical Trial.

Clin Infect Dis

February 2023

Infectious Diseases Unit, Internal Medicine Department, La Paz University Hospital, Instituto de Investigación del Hospital Universitario La Paz, School of Medicine, Autonomous University of Madrid, Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Infecciosas, Madrid, Spain.

Background: This study was designed to evaluate if patients with high risk for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) would benefit from treatment with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) followed by baricitinib in case of hypoxemia and systemic inflammation.

Methods: PANCOVID is an open-label, double-randomized, phase 3 pragmatic clinical trial including adults with symptomatic COVID-19 with ≥2 comorbidities or aged ≥60 years and was conducted between 10 October 2020 and 23 September 2021. In the first randomization, patients received TDF/FTC or no TDF/FTC.

Purpose: The widespread adoption of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) as preferred treatment modality for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has enlarged the number of patients needing open surgical conversion (OSC). The relationship between adherence to Instructions For Use (IFU) and EVAR long-term outcomes remains controversial. The aim of this study is to compare preoperative differences and postoperative outcomes between EVAR patients not adjusted to IFU and adjusted to IFU who underwent OSC.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) and diabetes are two of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide with dysregulated receptor tyrosine kinase signaling and strong co-occurrence correlation. Plasma autoantibodies represent a promising early diagnostic marker for both diseases before symptoms appear. In this study, we explore the value of autoantibodies against receptor-type tyrosine-protein phosphatase-like N (PTPRN; full-length or selected domains) as diagnostic markers using a cohort of individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), CRC, or both diseases or healthy individuals.
