MicroRNA (miR)-19b is deregulated in colorectal cancer (CRC) and locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC), predicting worse outcome and disease progression in CRC patients, and acting as a promising prognostic marker of patient recurrence and pathological response to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-based neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in LARC. Moreover, there is a strong inverse correlation between miR-19b and PPP2R5E in LARC, and both predict the response to neoadjuvant therapy in LARC patients. However, the functional role of the miR-19b/PPP2R5E axis in CRC cells remains to be experimentally evaluated.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, chronic, and neurodegenerative disease, and the most common cause of dementia worldwide. Currently, the mechanisms underlying the disease are far from being elucidated. Thus, the study of proteins involved in its pathogenesis would allow getting further insights into the disease and identifying new markers for AD diagnosis.

Motion Analysis, Ergonomics, Biomechanics and Motor Control Laboratory, Department of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation, and Physical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Rey Juan Carlos University, Alcorcon, Spain.

Purpose/aim: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are the most common traumatic ligament injuries of the knee, which course with impaired balance. The aim of the present study was to analyse the effect of kinesiology tape on balance in subjects with non-operated anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

Materials And Methods: 36 subjects were randomly assigned to the kinesiology tape group (KT = 20) and the non-standardized tape group (NST = 16).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the cost-effectiveness of next-generation sequencing (NGS) compared to sequential single-gene testing (SGT) for identifying patients with actionable genomic alterations in various cancers.
  • A cost calculator was developed using sensitivity and specificity data to estimate the cost per correctly identified patient (CCIP) for both testing methods.
  • Results show that NGS was generally more cost-effective than SGT for most cancers, suggesting that NGS may become the preferred approach in precision oncology as prices decrease and targeted therapies expand.

Malnutrition is a common condition associated with various pathologies such as infections, neoplasms and digestive system disorders. Patients can be managed using different strategies, which include dietary modifications or oral nutritional supplements (ONS). It is important to promote good ONS adherence in order to attain clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • Sigmoid volvulus is a rare bowel obstruction in kids that can be misdiagnosed, delaying treatment and causing complications.
  • In adults, it's a common issue, but there’s little research on how to treat it in children, leading to the use of adult protocols for pediatric care.
  • A 15-year-old boy had recurring sigmoid volvulus, but after imaging and studies showed no serious damage, he was treated successfully with a combination of colonoscopic decompression and laparoscopic sigmoidectomy, highlighting the need for prompt diagnosis and treatment in young patients.

Tools to predict surges in cases and hospitalizations during the COVID-19 pandemic may help guide public health decisions. Low cycle threshold (CT) counts may indicate greater SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in the respiratory tract, and thereby may be used as a surrogate marker of enhanced viral transmission. Several population studies have found an association between the oscillations in the mean CT over time and the evolution of the pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • Prosthetic joint infections are serious but rare, causing significant emotional and economic burdens on patients and healthcare systems.
  • The study investigated how four bacterial species adhere to two different alloys (Ti6Al4V and CoCrMo) commonly used in joint prostheses by analyzing surface characteristics like topography and roughness.
  • Results showed that CoCrMo promoted more bacterial aggregation and reduced bacterial viability compared to Ti6Al4V, suggesting that chemical composition plays a crucial role in bacterial adhesion despite similar physical surface properties.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a hereditary disease of connective tissue characterized by the loss of bone density and mass, which increases the fragility of the bones, thus presenting multiple fractures throughout the years followed by bone deformity and articular instability. This condition has various clinical presentations. We present four cases of OI, one case with type I, two cases with type II, and one case with type III.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the difference in tolerance for sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors between patients with heart failure classified as frail according to the FRAIL questionnaire, compared to those with heart failure without frailty.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed between 2021 and 2022 that included patients with heart failure at a heart failure unit in Bogotá who were being treated with a sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor. Clinical and laboratory data were collected during an initial visit and 12-48 weeks after that.
