Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are gaining significant interest in the field of biomedical functional nanomaterials because of their distinctive chemical and physical characteristics, particularly in drug delivery and magnetic hyperthermia applications. In this paper, we experimentally synthesized and characterized new FeO-based NPs, functionalizing its surface with a 5-TAMRA cadaverine modified copolymer consisting of PMAO and PEG. Despite these advancements, many combinations of NP cores and coatings remain unexplored.

Carbapenemase OXA-48 and its variants pose a serious threat to the development of effective treatments for bacterial infections. OXA-48-producing Enterobacterales are the most prevalent carbapenemase-producing bacteria in large parts of the world. Although these bacteria exhibit low-level carbapenem resistance , the infections they cause are challenging to treat with conventional therapies, owing to their spread and complex detection in clinical settings.

Previous studies showed that, paradoxically, obese patients with heart failure (HF) have better clinical outcomes compared to overweight, normal, or underweight patients. Scientific societies emphasize the importance of integrating quality of life (QoL) assessment in cardiovascular care. However, the association between QoL and weight remains understudied.

The druggable proteome refers to proteins that can bind to small molecules with appropriate chemical affinity, inducing a favorable clinical response. Predicting druggable proteins through screening and in silico modeling is imperative for drug design. To contribute to this field, we developed an accurate predictive classifier for druggable cancer-driving proteins using amino acid composition descriptors of protein sequences and 13 machine learning linear and non-linear classifiers.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the tumors with the worst prognosis, and unlike other cancers, few advances have been made in recent years. The only curative option is surgery, but only 15-20% of patients are candidates, with a high risk of relapse. In advanced pancreatic cancer there are few first-line treatment options and no validated biomarkers for better treatment selection.

For understanding a chemical compound's mechanism of action and its side effects, as well as for drug discovery, it is crucial to predict its possible protein targets. This study examines 15 developed target-centric models (TCM) employing different molecular descriptions and machine learning algorithms. They were contrasted with 17 third-party models implemented as web tools (WTCM).

Chronic inflammatory diseases are increasing in developed societies, thus new anti-inflammatory approaches are needed in the clinic. Synthetic peptides complexes can be designed to mimic the activity of anti-inflammatory mediators, in order to alleviate inflammation. Here, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory efficacy of tethered peptides mimicking the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) and the heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70).

The velopalatine sphincter is a muscular valve that creates a hermetic seal between the nasopharynx and the oropharynx. It guarantees phonation, swallowing, and breathing (forces expirations). In wind musicians, sphincter closure must be precise during sound generation.

: To examine the effects of the lockdown on diet adherence and stress levels in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). : Patients with a positive LPR diagnosis at the hypopharyngeal-esophageal impedance-pH monitoring were treated from a pre- to lockdown period with a 3-month high-protein, low-fat, alkaline, plant-based diet, with behavioral changes, and an association of pantoprazole (20 MG/d) and alginate (Gaviscon 3/d). The following patient-reported outcomes questionnaire and findings instrument were used: Reflux Symptom Score-12 (RSS-12) and Reflux Sign Assessment (RSA).

Carbapenem-resistant pathogens have been recognized as a health concern as they are both difficult to treat and detect in clinical microbiology laboratories. Researchers are making great efforts to develop highly specific, sensitive, accurate, and rapid diagnostic techniques, required to prevent the spread of these microorganisms and improve the prognosis of patients. In this context, CRISPR-Cas systems are proposed as promising tools for the development of diagnostic methods due to their high specificity; the Cas13a endonuclease can discriminate single nucleotide changes and displays collateral cleavage activity against single-stranded RNA molecules when activated.

Emergence of cefiderocol resistance among carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales, particularly those in the Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC), is becoming of alarming concern; however, the mechanistic basis of this phenomenon remains poorly understood. We describe the acquisition of VIM-1-mediated reduced cefiderocol susceptibility (MICs 0.5 to 4 mg/L) in a collection of 54 carbapenemase-producing isolates belonging to the ECC.

Nonmotor symptoms negatively affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it is unknown which nonmotor symptoms are most commonly associated with HRQoL. Considering the complex interacting network of various nonmotor symptoms and HRQoL, this study aimed to reveal the network structure, explained HRQoL variance, and identify the nonmotor symptoms that primarily affect HRQoL.

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multisystem neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. In particular, non-motor symptoms have become increasingly relevant to disease progression. This study aimed to reveal which non-motor symptoms have the highest impact on the complex interacting system of various non-motor symptoms and to determine the progression of these interactions over time.
