Article Synopsis
  • The systematic review focused on assessing the effectiveness and complications of endourological ex vivo stone surgeries in kidney donors with kidney stones, analyzing studies published between 2002 and 2023.
  • Out of 1,726 screened abstracts, 16 studies involving 209 patients were included, revealing a high average stone-free rate of 95.4% and a mean surgery duration of 17.3 minutes.
  • Complications were minimal, with less than 2% experiencing significant intraoperative or postoperative issues, highlighting these surgeries as a safe and effective option for treating nephrolithiasis in donors.

Purpose: Patients with lower urinary tract malformations (LUTM) were suspended from kidney transplantation (KT) programs in the past due to various concerns. Consequently, only a limited number of studies have explored this topic at hand. In this study, our objective was to perform a systematic review (SR) to evaluate the current evidence regarding KT outcomes as well as patient survival (PS), postoperative complications and urinary tract infections (UTI) in individuals with childhood LUTM.

Background And Objective: Patients with palpitations clinically suggestive of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) are often managed conservatively until ECG-documentation of the tachycardia, leading to high impact on life quality and healthcare resource utilization. We evaluated results of electrophysiological study (EPS), and ablation when appropriate, among these patients, with special focus on gender differences in management.

Methods: BELIEVE SVT is a European multicenter, retrospective registry in tertiary hospitals performing EPS in patients with palpitations, without ECG-documentation of tachycardia or preexcitation, and considered highly suggestive of PSVT by a cardiologist or cardiac electrophysiologist.

Background: Patients with chronic diseases such as heart failure (HF) are at risk of hospital admission. We evaluated the impact of living in nursing homes (NH) on readmissions and all-cause mortality of HF patients during a one-year follow up.

Methods: An observational and multicenter study from the Spanish National Registry of Heart Failure (RICA) was performed.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study of 520 adult patients showed that small abscesses (<30 mm) can be treated effectively with antibiotics, while larger abscesses require drainage methods, with surgical drainage being more effective but riskier.
  • * Post-treatment, luminal resection lowers the risk of abscess recurrence within a year, but anti-TNF therapy shows similar effectiveness for preventing recurrences regardless of resection.

Undescended testis (UDT, cryptorchidism) is the most common congenital anomaly of the genital tract. Despite its high incidence, the management of UDT varies between specialties (urology, pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric endocrinology). Therefore, as the European Association of Urology - Young Academic Urologists Pediatric Urology Working Group, we requested experts around the world to express their own personal approaches against various case scenarios of UDT in order to explore their individual reasoning.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent trials indicate that early coronary angiography (CAG) doesn't improve survival outcomes compared to delayed CAG in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) without ST elevation, although the effects on specific subgroups are still uncertain.
  • An analysis of 1,512 patients from five trials showed no significant difference in overall death rates between early and delayed CAG strategies, regardless of factors like age and prior heart issues.
  • Interestingly, women appeared to have higher odds of death with early CAG, suggesting that gender may influence outcomes in this context.

Introduction: Complex urological anomalies often require continued care as patients reach adulthood. Adequate transition for adolescents with ongoing urological care needs is critical to allow for seamless care in adult hospitals. Studies have shown that this can lead to improved patient and parental satisfaction, and lower utilisation of unplanned inpatient beds and emergency department visits.

Chondrogenic tumors are typically well recognized on radiographs, but differentiation between benign and malignant cartilaginous lesions can be difficult both for the radiologist and for the pathologist. Diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical, radiological and histological findings. While treatment of benign lesions does not require surgery, the only curative treatment for chondrosarcoma is resection.

  • The study investigates the safety and effectiveness of sotrovimab for treating severe COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients, specifically looking at data from October to December 2021.
  • Out of 32 patients studied, most were either organ transplant recipients or had blood cancers, with some experiencing respiratory issues and a small percentage dying or needing ventilation.
  • Results suggest that early treatment within the first two weeks may lead to better outcomes, and no adverse effects were reported from sotrovimab, indicating it could be a safe option that requires further research.

Arthroscopic Disc Repositioning Techniques of the Temporomandibular Joint Part 2: Resorbable Pins.

Atlas Oral Maxillofac Surg Clin North Am

September 2022

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital of Badajoz, Avenida de Elvas s/n, 06080 Badajoz, Spain; Private Practice, Hospital Quirónsalud Clideba, Calle Eladio Salinero de los Santos 6, 06011 Badajoz, Spain; Active Member of the European Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons (ESTMJS), International Member of American the Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons (ASTMJS).. Electronic address:

Arthroscopic rigid fixation (ARF) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with resorbable pins and other advanced arthroscopic disc repositioning (ADR) techniques by sutures has provided a renewed interest in the role played by the disc in the treatment of the most severe cases of TMJ ID with anterior disc displacement with severe limitation of mouth opening. These techniques may be the last step prior to open TMJ surgery, if other less complex operative arthroscopic techniques (OAT) have previously failed, or for those cases in which no predictable results are expected with simpler OAT due to the presence of a severe displaced disc or closed lock. In this article, ARF with resorbable pins is being approached, with a special focus on describing the technique while reporting its advantages and disadvantages.

Tye and Sardi present an extensive critical overview of the sparse and inconsistent literature on the psychological, psychosocial, and psychosexual impact of penile circumcision (PC) with a clear aim of achieving a framework for policy considerations and future research. With this perspective I humbly propose to step back and ask some deeper questions about PC, being this a politicized topic we should ask ourselves whether we can engage with a literature so full of polemical publications and polarized opinions. Even when presenting “straightforward” empirical data we can stimulate very different interpretations based on the previous beliefs or convictions of the reader, generating an undesirable sociocultural division.

Purpose: The widespread adoption of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) as preferred treatment modality for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has enlarged the number of patients needing open surgical conversion (OSC). The relationship between adherence to Instructions For Use (IFU) and EVAR long-term outcomes remains controversial. The aim of this study is to compare preoperative differences and postoperative outcomes between EVAR patients not adjusted to IFU and adjusted to IFU who underwent OSC.

Testicular cancer (TC) represents 1% of male neoplasms and 5% of urological tumors. Most of seminoma patients and about 55% of patients with nonseminoma TC have stage I disease at diagnosis. TC usually presents with a palpable testicular mass incidentally found by the patient himself or its partner by palpation.

Follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) are antigen-presenting cells located in the germinal centers of the lymph nodes. Among the few tumors showing FDC differentiation are follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) and Castleman disease (CD), more precisely the unicentric hyaline vascular (HV) variant. Both are relatively rare tumors, and the diagnostic cytological experience is limited to descriptions of isolated cases or small series.

Inversions are structural variants that are generally balanced. However, they could lead to gene disruptions or have positional effects leading to diseases. Mutations in the gene cause Nance-Horan syndrome, an X-linked disorder characterised by congenital cataracts and dental anomalies.
