Background: Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is a non-invasive cancer treatment technique stemming from photodynamic therapy (PDT) and has garnered escalated interest among researchers in recent years. Numerous aspects of cancer SDT remain contentious, and the global research trajectory within this domain remains insufficiently explored. This study seeks to delineate the comprehensive knowledge framework, developmental trends, and pivotal research focal points concerning cancer SDT.

Effective immune-cell responses depend on collective decision-making mediated by diffusible intercellular signaling proteins called cytokines. Here, we designed a three-dimensional spatiotemporal modeling framework and a precise finite-element simulation setup to systematically investigate the origin and consequences of spatially inhomogeneous cytokine distributions in lymph nodes. We found that such inhomogeneities are critical for effective paracrine signaling, and they do not arise by diffusion and uptake alone, but rather depend on properties of the cell population such as an all-or-none behavior of cytokine secreting cells.

Background: Pleural invasion (PI) is considered to be an adverse prognostic factor in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the prognostic roles of PI in pathologic (p)T3-4N0M0 NSCLC remain controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of PI in patients with pT3-4N0M0 NSCLC.

Sleep has been demonstrated to support memory formation from early life on. The precise temporal coupling of slow oscillations (SOs) with spindles has been suggested as a mechanism facilitating this consolidation process in thalamocortical networks. Here, we investigated the development of sleep spindles and SOs and their coordinate interplay by comparing frontal, central, and parietal electroencephalogram recordings during a nap between infants aged 2-3 months ( = 31) and toddlers aged 14-17 months ( = 49).

Telomere maintenance in neuroblastoma is linked to poor outcome and caused by either telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) activation or through alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT). In contrast to TERT activation, commonly caused by genomic rearrangements or MYCN amplification, ALT is less well understood. Alterations at the ATRX locus are key drivers of ALT but only present in ∼50% of ALT tumors.

Aims: Traditional cardiovascular (CV) biomarkers (high-sensitivity troponinT [hsTnT] and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide [NT-proBNP]) are important to monitor cancer patients' cardiac function and to assess prognosis. Newer CV biomarkers (mid-regional pro-adrenomedullin [MR-proADM], C-terminal pro-arginine vasopressin [copeptin], and mid-regional pro-atrial natriuretic peptide [MR-proANP]) might outperform traditional biomarkers.
Methods And Results: Overall, 442 hospitalized cancer patients without significant CV disease or current infection were enrolled (61 ± 15 years, 52% male, advanced cancer stage: 85%) and concentrations of CV biomarkers were analysed.
Secondary lymphoid organs (SLOs) provide the confined microenvironment required for stromal cells to interact with immune cells to initiate adaptive immune responses resulting in B cell differentiation. Here, we studied three patients from two families with functional hyposplenism, absence of tonsils, and complete lymph node aplasia, leading to recurrent bacterial and viral infections. We identified biallelic loss-of-function mutations in encoding the lymphotoxin beta receptor (LTβR), primarily expressed on stromal cells.

Juvenile rodents and other altricial mammals react with calming, immobility, and postural modifications to parental pickup, a set of behaviors referred to as the transport response. Here, we investigate sensory mechanisms underlying the rat transport response. Grasping rat pups in anterior neck positions evokes strong immobility and folding up of feet, whereas more posterior grasping has lesser effects on immobility and foot position.

Background: Pneumonectomy is one of the important surgical methods for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study evaluated the effects of laterality on the short- and long-term survival of NSCLC patients undergoing pneumonectomy.
Methods: We reviewed the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database to retrieve the data of patients who underwent pneumonectomy for stage I-III NSCLC from 2004 to 2015.

Acyl-coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferases are enzymes which are involved in the homeostasis of cholesterol. Impaired enzyme activity is associated with the occurrence of various diseases like Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, and cancers. At present, mitotane is the only inhibitor of this class of enzymes in clinical use for the treatment of adrenocortical carcinoma but associated with common and severe adverse effects.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-modified natural killer (NK) cells show antileukemic activity against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in vivo. However, NK cell-mediated tumor killing is often impaired by the interaction between human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-E and the inhibitory receptor, NKG2A. Here, we describe a strategy that overcomes CAR-NK cell inhibition mediated by the HLA-E-NKG2A immune checkpoint.

The ability to form long-term memories begins in early infancy. However, little is known about the specific mechanisms that guide memory formation during this developmental stage. We demonstrate the emergence of a long-term memory for a novel voice in three-month-old infants using the EEG mismatch response (MMR) to the word "baby".

The complexity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to childhood abuse (CA) present challenges for effective psychotherapeutic treatment. Consequently, there is great interest in the long-term effectiveness of psychological treatments for this population. This study aims to investigate the long-term outcomes of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for PTSD (DBT-PTSD) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) 9 months after treatment termination.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the perioperative and midterm oncological outcomes of robotic-assisted thoracic surgery extended thymectomy for patients with large resectable thymomas compared with small thymomas.
Methods: This retrospective single-center study included 204 patients with thymomas who underwent robotic-assisted thoracic surgery extended thymectomy between January 2003 and February 2024. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the thymoma size (5-cm threshold).

Social support from family and friends, albeit associated with beneficial health effects, does not always help to cope with pain. This may be because humans elicit mixed expectations of social support and evaluative judgment. The present studies aimed to test whether pet dogs are a more beneficial source of support in a painful situation than human companions because they are not evaluative.

Importance: The development of an alcohol use disorder in adolescence is associated with increased risk of future alcohol dependence. The differential associations of risk factors with alcohol use over the course of 8 years are important for preventive measures.
Objective: To determine the differential associations of risk-taking aspects of personality, social factors, brain functioning, and familial risk with hazardous alcohol use in adolescents over the course of 8 years.
