Genome sequences from evolving infectious pathogens allow quantification of case introductions and local transmission dynamics. We sequenced 11,357 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) genomes from Switzerland in 2020-the sixth largest effort globally. Using a representative subset of these data, we estimated viral introductions to Switzerland and their persistence over the course of 2020.

Lactate can protect against damage caused by acute brain injuries both in rodents and in human patients. Besides its role as a metabolic support and alleged preferred neuronal fuel in stressful situations, an additional signaling mechanism mediated by the hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 1 (HCAR1) was proposed to account for lactate's beneficial effects. However, the administration of HCAR1 agonists to mice subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) at reperfusion did not appear to exert any relevant protective effect.

To understand the geographical and temporal spread of SARS-CoV-2 during the first documented wave of infection in the state of Vaud, Switzerland, we analyzed clusters of positive cases using the precise residential location of 33,651 individuals tested (RT-PCR) between January 10 and June 30, 2020. We used a prospective Poisson space-time scan statistic (SaTScan) and a Modified Space-Time Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Application with Noise (MST-DBSCAN) to identify both space-time and transmission clusters, and estimated cluster duration, transmission behavior (emergence, growth, reduction, etc.) and relative risk.

Methods: Sixty-one children enrolled in the MUCOVIB multicentre prospective cohort provided 746 samples, mostly nasopharyngeal swabs, throat swabs and sputa which were analysed using culture, specific real-time qPCRs and 16S rRNA amplicon metagenomics.

After ischemic stroke, in the lesion core as well as in the ischemic penumbra, evolution of tissue damage and repair is strongly affected by neuroinflammatory events that involve activation of local specialized glial cells, release of inflammatory mediators, recruiting of systemic cells and vascular remodelling. To take advantage of this intricate response in the quest to devise new protective therapeutic strategies we need a better understanding of the territorial and temporal interplay between stroke-triggered inflammatory and cell death-inducing processes in both parenchymal and vascular brain cells. Our goal is to describe structural rearrangements and functional modifications occurring in glial and vascular cells early after an acute ischemic stroke.

The Chlamydiales order is composed of obligate intracellular bacteria and includes the Chlamydiaceae family and several family-level lineages called Chlamydia-related bacteria. In this review we will highlight the conserved and distinct biological features between these two groups. We will show how a better characterization of Chlamydia-related bacteria may increase our understanding on the Chlamydiales order evolution, and may help identifying new therapeutic targets to treat chlamydial infections.
