Background: Approximately 10%-20% of prostate cancers progress to metastatic and castration-resistant forms (mCRPC). Radioligand (RLT) therapy with [Lu]Lu-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is an approved treatment for metastasized mCRPC. Moreover, Actinium-225 (Ac), an alpha-emitter isotope, has also been used to label PSMA and, recently, to treat mCRPC patients with encouraging results.

Corneal crosslinking (CXL) is a medical procedure used to treat keratoconus. CXL works by strengthening the collagen fibers of the cornea through the application of riboflavin (vitamin B2) and ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps to stabilize the cornea and prevent further deterioration. There is a recognized risk that CXL can trigger the reactivation of dormant herpes simplex virus (HSV), leading to herpetic keratitis even in patients with no history of herpetic disease.

Clitoromegaly can be congenital or acquired, and it is usually associated with exposure to androgen excess. Pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for transient clitoromegaly in premature female infants have not been fully elucidated. Herein, we present the case of an extremely premature female twin infant, with an extensive web of skin on the back of the left leg, hypoplastic left labia majora, and normal clitoris appearance at birth.

  • Pseudothrombocytopenia (PTCP) is a rare issue where platelet counts appear low due to aggregation, leading to possible misdiagnoses and unsafe clinical decisions if not recognized quickly.
  • The most frequent cause of PTCP is ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and there are various management strategies documented, though expert guidance is limited.
  • A collaborative group in Croatia developed minimal recommendations to help standardize the detection and reporting of platelet counts from EDTA-induced PTCP, aimed at laboratory professionals and healthcare providers involved in blood sample management.

  • The study investigates the relationship between psoriasis severity and clinical features of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in a real-world clinical setting, as previous connections between the two have been unclear.
  • Seventy-six adult patients with both psoriasis and PsA were assessed for various clinical measures, including joint tenderness, swelling, and enthesitis, using standard evaluation metrics.
  • The results showed no significant link between psoriasis severity (PASI) and most PsA variables, except a moderate correlation with enthesitis, suggesting that higher psoriasis severity may indicate more enthesitis presence, especially in older patients.

Icteria interference for 34 clinical chemistry analytes on different analytical platforms: Method or analyzer dependent?

Clin Chim Acta

January 2025

Working Group for Preanalytical Phase of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, Zagreb, Croatia; Department of Laboratory Medicine, Institute for clinical chemistry and pathobiochemistry, University Hospital Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated how increasing bilirubin levels affect 34 clinical chemistry tests across four different analytical platforms, positing that interference varies by both method and analyzer.
  • - Researchers prepared serum samples spiked with bilirubin and measured analyte values simultaneously at all locations, analyzing the data for consistency and potential bias.
  • - Results showed that while some interferences from bilirubin were consistent, others differed depending on the specific analyzer, suggesting variability in how different platforms handle icterus interference.

Background And Aims: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a common procedure conducted under regional anaesthesia, providing real-time cerebral function monitoring. Many different combinations of regional cervical blocks exist, and most offer adequate analgesia in intraoperative and postoperative recovery. This research compares a superficial cervical plexus block (SCB) alone and combined with an ultrasound (US)-guided carotid sheath block (CSB).

  • The study assessed the link between disease activity and quality of life (QoL) in 143 adult patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), finding significant correlations between fatigue levels and various aspects of physical health.
  • Key disease measures, including the Disease Activity Score (DAS28) and functional assessments, were related to physical health outcomes, while markers like ESR and CRP showed no significant correlation.
  • The findings indicate that disease activity in PsA has a mild to moderate effect on health-related quality of life, highlighting the importance of managing both physical symptoms and fatigue in patients.

Background: Stroke due to basilar artery occlusion (BAO) is a severe neurovascular condition with only recently proven effectiveness of mechanical thrombectomy as treatment. Early re-occlusion of the basilar artery (RE-BAO) is an even more challenging form of stroke to treat, associated with poor outcomes and still no optimal treatment guidelines. There are only a few reported cases covering this topic thus far.

Background Context: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a leading cause of low back pain (LBP) and leg pain and may require surgical treatment in case of persistent pain and/or neurological deficits. Conventional discectomy involves removing the herniated fragment and additional material from the disc space, potentially accelerating disc degeneration and contributing to chronic LBP. Conversely, by resecting the herniated fragment only, sequestrectomy may reduce postoperative LBP while increasing the risk of LDH recurrence.

Intratumoural oncolytic virotherapy may have promise as a means to debulk and downstage inoperable tumours in preparation for successful surgery. Here, we describe the unique case of a 50-year-old self-experimenting female virologist with locally recurrent muscle-invasive breast cancer who was able to proceed to simple, non-invasive tumour resection after receiving multiple intratumoural injections of research-grade virus preparations, which first included an Edmonston-Zagreb measles vaccine strain (MeV) and then a vesicular stomatitis virus Indiana strain (VSV), both prepared in her own laboratory. The intratumoural virus therapy was well tolerated.

  • Periocular dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition around the eyes, with unclear causes, possibly linked to the skin microbiome, prompting this study to compare microbiota between affected individuals and healthy controls.
  • The study involved 35 patients with periocular dermatitis and 39 healthy people who provided skin swabs; DNA was extracted and analyzed using advanced sequencing technology.
  • Results showed significant differences in bacterial diversity between the groups, with certain bacteria more abundant in patients, suggesting that changes in the skin microbiota may play a role in the development of periocular dermatitis and warrant further research.
