Article Synopsis
  • - Piriformis syndrome (PS) is a condition where tension in the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve, leading to buttock pain and lower limb symptoms similar to sciatica.
  • - A case study highlights a 62-year-old woman with PS who experienced left buttock pain and nerve-related sensations, but failed to respond to conservative treatments.
  • - Diagnosing PS is challenging due to overlapping symptoms with other disorders; management combines clinical evaluation and imaging, with botulinum toxin injections being effective for resistant cases, prompting a call for more research on diagnostic criteria and treatment options.

ESMO Open

August 2024

Center for Dermato-oncology, Department of Dermatology, Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Tübingen; Cluster of Excellence iFIT (EXC 2180) 'Image-Guided and Functionally Instructed Tumor Therapies', Tübingen. Electronic address:

Background: The introduction of anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) immunotherapy has revolutionized the treatment landscape for melanoma, enhancing both response rates and survival outcomes in patients with advanced stages of the disease. Despite these remarkable advances, a noteworthy subset of patients (40%-60%) does not derive advantage from this therapeutic approach. This study aims to identify key predictive factors and create a user-friendly predictive nomogram for stage IV melanoma patients receiving first-line anti-PD-1-based immunotherapy, improving treatment decisions.

Introduction: End-of-life care is frequently discussed in clinical practice. Non-beneficial treatments and the need for decision-making regarding therapeutic institutions are increasingly addressed. There are no guidelines regarding prescribing or de-prescribing antibiotic therapy at the end of life, which depends on clinical decisions.

Introduction Most cancer patients spend their last days of life in the hospital, often receiving invasive and non-palliative interventions. These patients are particularly susceptible to infections, which are a major cause of death. The decision to use antimicrobials in a palliative context is difficult, given the lack of guidelines.

Serositis is seen in approximately 12% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), usually in the form of pleuritis or pericarditis. Peritoneal serositis with ascites is an extremely rare manifestation of SLE and ascites as initial manifestation of SLE is even rarer. Here, we describe a previously healthy 48-year-old female with periumbilical abdominal pain, constitutional symptoms, ascites, pleural effusions and raised CA-125 level as an initial manifestation of SLE, which led up to the diagnosis of pseudo-pseudo Meigs syndrome.

Patients with cancer have been shown to have increased risk of COVID-19 severity. We previously built and validated the COVID-19 Risk in Oncology Evaluation Tool (CORONET) to predict the likely severity of COVID-19 in patients with active cancer who present to hospital. We assessed the differences in presentation and outcomes of patients with cancer and COVID-19, depending on the wave of the pandemic.

Introduction: Patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) face the worse functional and vital prognosis among all stroke subtypes. In cases of severe SICH, therapeutic inertia or nihilism complicates meaningful identification of outcome predictors. Therefore, we sought to investigate clinic-radiological and process of care predictors of short-term mortality in patients with mild to moderate SICH.

Introduction  Opioids are the mainstay of pain management in critically ill patients. However, recent attention to their adverse effects in the intensive care unit (ICU) has led to the use of strategies that aim to reduce these side effects. Among these strategies, there are multimodal analgesia protocols, which prioritize pain management and employ a combination of different analgesics to spare excessive doses of opioids and sedatives in continuous infusion.
