We report the case of a 3-year-old who was highly sensitized and received cardiac transplantation from a donor in the acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Despite maximal immunosuppression owing to a positive cross-match and desensitization protocol, the patient's course was favorable.

Background: Wide practice variation exists in the management of gastroschisis. Routine endotracheal intubation for bedside closure may lead to longer duration of mechanical ventilation.

Methods: The Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgery Network gastroschisis dataset was queried for all patients undergoing attempted bedside reduction and closure.

The thalamic nuclei are involved in many neurodegenerative diseases and therefore, their identification is of key importance in numerous clinical treatments. Automated segmentation of thalamic subparts is currently achieved by exploring diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI), but in absence of such data, atlas-based segmentation can be used as an alternative. Currently, there is a limited number of available digital atlases of the thalamus.

Objectives: To propose a model describing levels of integration of palliative care into the care of ICU patients.

Data Sources: Literature review and author opinion.

Conclusions: All critical care team members should demonstrate and foster their core competencies in caring for patients with complex illness and uncertain prognosis, including at the end of life.

The use of age-appropriate care as an organized framework for care delivery in the neonatal intensive care unit is founded on the work of Heidelise Als, PhD, and her synactive theory of development. This theoretical construct has recently been advanced by the work of Gibbins and colleagues with the "universe of developmental care" conceptual model and developmental care core measures which were endorsed by the National Association of Neonatal Nurses in their age-appropriate care of premature infant guidelines as best-practice standards for the provision of high-quality care in the neonatal intensive care unit. These guidelines were recently revised and expanded.

The thalamus is an essential relay station in the cortical-subcortical connections. It is characterized by a complex anatomical architecture composed of numerous small nuclei, which mediate the involvement of the thalamus in a wide range of neurological functions. We present a novel framework for segmenting the thalamic nuclei, which explores the orientation distribution functions (ODFs) from diffusion magnetic resonance images at 3 T.

During child development, physiological changes occur in the auditory cortex, which are reflected by differences in the electrophysiological signals. This study aimed to examine the age-related changes of the Mismatch Negativity component (MMN) in response to speech and non-speech stimuli in a cross-sectional design. Results revealed distinct patterns of activation according to stimulus type and age.

Transfusion

October 2007

Division of Hematology-Oncology, University Hospital Center Sainte-Justine, University of Montreal, 3175 chemin de la Côte Sainte-Catherine, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Background: Although the frequency of complications in adults undergoing therapeutic apheresis is low, there are little data in children.

Study Design And Methods: A retrospective study of 186 children who had undergone a total of 1632 apheresis procedures between 1994 and 2002 was conducted. Adverse reactions were prospectively documented.
