Background: Multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial (MRGNB) infections represent a major public health threat. Cancer patients and, among them, hematological patients are most vulnerable to these infections. Gut colonization by MRGNB is a common phenomenon occurring during hospitalization and chemotherapy exposure.

Background: Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders represent rare but serious complications of kidney transplantation.

Methods: We assessed incidence, risk factors, and outcomes in 21,546 patients receiving grafts between 1990 and 2009. Data were compared by decade of transplant (1990-1999 vs 2000-2009).

Introduction: There is paucity of data regarding change in arachnoid cyst (AC) volume following surgery. This study aimed at investigating the clinical outcome of ACs and applying 2 volumetric methods for determination of their volume change post microsurgical fenestration.

Methods: Twenty-one ACs in 20 patients that underwent microsurgical fenestration were analyzed using 2 volumetric methods; the modified McDonald equation and the picture archiving and communication (PAC) system-based method.

Current guidelines recommend against systematic screening or treating asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB) among kidney transplant (KT) recipients, although the evidence regarding episodes occurring early after transplantation or in the presence of anatomical abnormalities is inconclusive. Oral fosfomycin may constitute a good option for the treatment of post-transplant AB, particularly due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) uropathogens. Available clinical evidence supporting its use in this specific setting, however, remains scarce.

BACKGROUND Development and rupture of a de novo intracranial aneurysm is rare. Little is known regarding its etiology and the appropriate timing of follow-up angiograms after surgical clipping or coiling. CASE REPORT We present a case report of a 39-year-old male smoker with history of hypertension who developed a de novo aneurysm 8 years after surgical clipping of an aneurysm in the middle cerebral artery in the same segment.

Background: This is a prospective, multicenter, observational study in cytomegalovirus (CMV)-seropositive kidney transplant recipients with pretransplant CMV-specific cell-mediated immunity (CMV-CMI) receiving antithymocyte globulin (ATG). We aimed to investigate posttransplant CMV-CMI over time and the impact of the dose-dependent ATG.

Methods: CMV-CMI was assessed at days +30, +45, +60, and +90 after transplantation with the QuantiFERON-CMV assay.

Developmental Dynamic Dysphasia: Are Bilateral Brain Abnormalities a Signature of Inefficient Neural Plasticity?

Front Hum Neurosci

March 2020

Cognitive Neurology and Aphasia Unit, Centro de Investigaciones Médico-Sanitarias, Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga (IBIMA), University of Malaga, Málaga, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study presents a case of developmental dynamic dysphasia (DDD) in a right-handed adolescent boy with brain malformations affecting language-related areas in both hemispheres, leading to significant verbal communication challenges.
  • Despite preserved skills in auditory comprehension and reading, subject D showed impaired executive functions and reduced verbal fluency, with neuroimaging revealing abnormal brain structure and connectivity related to language processing.
  • Additional findings included congenital mirror movements, suggesting bilateral motor issues, but genetic testing did not identify mutations typically linked to these abnormalities, indicating that the complexities of his brain malformations may explain the DDD and associated symptoms.

Unit of Infectious Diseases, University Hospital, "12 de Octubre", Instituto de Investigación Hospital "12 de Octubre" (imas12), School of Medicine, Universidad Complutense, Madrid, Spain.

Oral fosfomycin may constitute an alternative for the treatment of lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs), particularly in view of recent safety concerns with fluroquinolones. Specific data on the efficacy and safety of fosfomycin in KTR are scarce. We performed a retrospective study in 14 Spanish hospitals including KTRs treated with oral fosfomycin (calcium and trometamol salts) for posttransplant cystitis between January 2005 and December 2017.

Context: The urinary tract, previously considered a sterile body niche, has emerged as the host of an array of bacteria in healthy individuals, revolutionizing the urology research field.

Objective: To review the literature on microbiome implications in the urinary tract and the usefulness of probiotics/prebiotics and diet as treatment for urologic disorders.

Evidence Acquisition: A systematic review was conducted using PubMed and Medline from inception until July 2016.

Differences and similarities between intrusive thoughts typical of obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and hypochondriasis are relevant for their differential diagnosis, formulation, and psychological treatment. Previous research in non-clinical samples pointed out the relevance of some process variables, such as responsibility, guilt, or neutralization strategies. This research is aimed to investigate the differences and similarities between clinical obsessions, worries, and illness intrusions in some of these process variables.
