Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Institute of Sports Medicine Copenhagen, Copenhagen University Hospital-Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, Denmark.

The musculoskeletal system, crucial for movement and support, relies on the delicate balance of connective tissue homeostasis. Maintaining this equilibrium is essential for tissue health and function. There has been increasing evidence in the past decade that shows the circadian clock as a master regulator of extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis in several connective tissue clocks.

Incretin-based therapies are highly successful in combatting obesity and type 2 diabetes. Yet both activation and inhibition of the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor (GIPR) in combination with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor (GLP-1R) activation have resulted in similar clinical outcomes, as demonstrated by the GIPR-GLP-1R co-agonist tirzepatide and AMG-133 (ref. ) combining GIPR antagonism with GLP-1R agonism.

Association of Cortical Lesions With Regional Glutamate, GABA, -Acetylaspartate, and Myoinositol Levels in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis.

Neurology

July 2024

From the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (M.A.M., M.P., V.W., H.L., H.R.S.), Copenhagen University Hospital - Amager and Hvidovre; Department of Health Technology (H.L.), Technical University of Denmark, Kgs. Lyngby; Danish Multiple Sclerosis Center (M.B., J.R.C., F.S.), Department of Neurology, Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet, Glostrup; Department of Neurology (H.R.S.), Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg; and Department of Clinical Medicine (F.S., H.R.S.), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Background And Objectives: Cortical lesions contribute to disability in multiple sclerosis (MS), but their impact on regional neurotransmitter levels remains to be clarified. We tested the hypothesis that cortical lesions are associated with regional glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentrations within the affected cortical region.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we used structural 7T MRI to segment cortical lesions and 7T proton MR-spectroscopy of the bilateral sensorimotor hand areas to quantify regional GABA, glutamate, -acetylaspartate, and myoinositol concentrations in patients with MS (inclusion criteria: diagnosis of relapsing-remitting [RR] or secondary progressive MS [SPMS]; age 18-80 years) and age and sex-matched healthy controls.

Article Synopsis
  • Platelet transfusions are commonly administered in ICUs for patients with low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), but the specific practices and their outcomes are not well-documented.
  • In a study of 504 ICU patients across Europe and the U.S., 20.8% received platelet transfusions, primarily using pooled products, with varying practices in dosage and volume across different countries.
  • The research found that while platelet transfusions are frequent, they provide limited increases in platelet counts, indicating potential inconsistencies in their effectiveness and administration practices.

Referral Pathways for Children with Atopic Diseases in Denmark.

Acta Derm Venereol

June 2024

Department of Dermatology and Allergy, Copenhagen University Hospital - Herlev and Gentofte, Denmark and Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Atopic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, food allergy, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, and/or asthma are common. In Denmark, however, there are multiple referral pathways for these diseases in the healthcare system and they are poorly understood. To describe how children with atopic diseases navigate their way through the Danish healthcare system, a questionnaire was distributed to children aged ≤ 17 years, who were being treated for atopic diseases between August 2020 and June 2021, either by a practising specialist or a hospital department, in the Capital Region of Denmark.
