MicroRNAs (miRNA) are small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate posttranscriptional gene expression by repressing messengerRNA-targets. MiRNAs are abundant in many cell types and are secreted into extracellular fluids, protected from degradation by packaging in extracellular vesicles. These circulating miRNAs are easily accessible, disease-specific and sensitive to small changes, which makes them ideal biomarkers for diagnostic, prognostic, predictive or monitoring purposes.

Unlabelled: In breast augmentation, during submuscular or dual plane dissection, anatomical variations of the inferior and costal origin of the pectoralis major muscle (PMM) play a key role to ensure optimal implant coverage. Especially, a short and narrow muscle or surgical release along the sternum increases the risk of irregularities and animation deformities of the implant.
Methods: In 84 consecutive aesthetic breast augmentations intraoperatively, measurement of PMM dimensions was performed bilaterally.

Introduction: Impaired microcirculation, along with an increase in chronic medical conditions in the geriatric cohort, may favor the development of soft-tissue defects in the lower extremity and equally impair the options for plastic-reconstructive surgery. In particular, outcome analyses in the increasing patient cohort ≥ 80 years (octogenarians) are limited.
Methods: Setting 80 years as the cutoff, we conducted an age-related outcome analysis of all patients undergoing free-flap reconstruction of the lower extremity from 2014 to 2020, comprising the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) as the possible outcome predicting factors.

Objective: Free flap transfer is a safe and reliable technique for soft tissue reconstruction. However, impaired flap perfusion with consecutive microcirculatory failure leading to partial or total flap failure remains a clinically relevant problem. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) has been shown to improve microcirculation in adipo-cutaneous tissues in healthy humans as well as in free flaps.

Background: There are few large studies on which factors are associated with the occurrence of arrhythmias. Implantable loop recorders (ILR) are useful in detecting arrhythmia due to prolonged and continuous ECG monitoring. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify and evaluate clinical characteristics and ECG parameters for predicting arrhythmias requiring pacemaker/ICD implantation by analyzing a study cohort with ILR.

Introduction: Scapholunate instability frequently leads to chronic pain or even severe osteoarthritis of the wrist. Most favored reconstruction techniques of chronic SL-ligament injuries are based on the usage of a tendon, although there is still a lack of consensus which technique is superior.
Materials And Methods: In a retrospective cohort analysis we compared 9 patients who underwent SL-ligament repair according to Van den Abbeele and 12 patients who underwent modified three ligament tenodesis according to Garcia-Elias, performed at a single institution.

Purpose: Hardly any other topic is as current as the gender-conscious medical treatment of every individual. Similarly, in sports, there are crucial differences that should be considered in order to treat everyone appropriately, with the aim to prevent injuries according to their needs. The objective of this study is to show that the differences between biological males and females are so significant that they require both specific injury prevention and therapy programs.

Objectives: Despite a common utilization of "Negative Pressure Wound Therapy" (NPWT) Devices in a wide range of specialties, some of the basic mechanisms of action of the techniques are still on debate. Conflicting results from prior studies demonstrate our lack of understanding how wound-bed perfusion or cutaneous microcirculation is affected by NPWT.
Methods: We conducted a prospective randomized study which included 45 healthy subjects to further investigate the acute effects of NPWT on cutaneous microcirculation underneath the applied dressing.

As a basic science, craniofacial research embraces multiple facets spanning from molecular regulation of craniofacial development, cell biology/signaling and ultimately translational craniofacial biology. Calvarial sutures coordinate development of the skull, and the premature fusion of one or more, leads to craniosynostosis. Animal models provide significant contributions toward craniofacial biology and clinical/surgical treatments of patients with craniofacial disorders.

Background: This study investigated the questionable necessity of genetic testing for Fanconi anemia in children with hand anomalies. The current UK guidelines suggest that every child with radial ray dysplasia or a thumb anomaly should undergo further cost intensive investigation for Fanconi anemia. In this study we reviewed the numbers of patients and referral patterns, as well as the financial and service provision implications UK guidelines provide.

Background: Multiple techniques for the repair of flexor tendon injuries in zone 1 have been proposed over time. While pull-out suture techniques and bone anchor seem to be stronger than internal suture techniques, they are associated with a higher complication rate. We therefore developed an alternative internal suture repair with similar biomechanical stability to those of pull-out sutures and bone anchors.

Bipolar active fixation (BipolarAFL) and quadripolar passive fixation left-ventricular leads (QuadPFL) have been designed to reduce the risk of phrenic nerve stimulation (PNS), enable targeted left-ventricular pacing, and overcome problems of difficult coronary venous anatomy and lead dislodgment. This study sought to report the long-term safety and performance of a BipolarAFL, Medtronic Attain Stability 20066, compared to QuadPFL. We performed a single-operator retrospective analysis of 81 patients receiving cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) (36 BipolarAFL, 45 QuadPFL).

The mammalian calvarial vault is an ancient and highly conserved structure among species, however, the mechanisms governing osteogenesis of the calvarial vault and how they might be conserved across mammalian species remain unclear. The aim of this study was to determine if regional differences in osteogenic potential of the calvarial vault, first described in mice, extend to humans. We derived human frontal and parietal osteoblasts from fetal calvarial tissue, demonstrating enhanced osteogenic potential both and of human frontal derived osteoblasts compared to parietal derived osteoblasts.

Melanoma is one of the most common cancers in adolescents and adults at fertile age, especially in women. With novel and more effective systemic therapies that began to profoundly change the dismal outcome of melanoma by prolonging overall survival, the wish for fertility preservation or even parenthood has to be considered for a growing portion of melanoma patients-from the patients' as well as from the physicians' perspective. The dual blockade of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway by B-Raf proto-oncogene serine/threonine kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitors and the immune checkpoint inhibition by anti-programmed cell death protein 1 and anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein-4 monoclonal antibodies constitute the current standard systemic approaches to combat locally advanced or metastatic melanoma.
