Life satisfaction around the world: Measurement invariance of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups.

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset-with data collected between 2020 and 2022 -to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions.

Assessing axonal pathology and disease progression in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy using corneal confocal microscopy.

Objective: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is an autoimmune neuropathy characterized by progressive or relapsing-remitting weakness and sensory deficits. This study aims to evaluate the utility of corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) in diagnosing and monitoring CIDP.

Methods: We analysed 100 CIDP patients and 31 healthy controls using CCM to measure corneal nerve fiber density (CNFD), length (CNFL), and branch density (CNBD).

Conduction Disorders after Rapid Deployment Aortic Valve Replacement Compared to Conventional Aortic Valve Replacement.

Objectives:  We evaluated and compared early postprocedural and midterm incidence and evolution of atrioventricular and intraventricular conduction disorders following rapid deployment aortic valve replacement (RDAVR) and conventional aortic valve replacement (AVR).

Materials And Methods:  One hundred and forty-seven patients who underwent isolated rapid deployment AVR between 2017 and 2021 as well as 128 patients after conventional biological AVR in the same period were included in this study. ECGs recorded at baseline, discharge, and 12 months were retrospectively analyzed.

Surviving a classic heat stroke/hyperthermia > 42 °C - a case report.

Introduction: Classic heat stroke is a severe trauma which can lead to multi-organ dysfunctions and is associated with a high mortality.

Case Presentation: In this case report we present a 73-year-old patient with a classic heat stroke. His initial core body temperature was over 42 °C and he had a GCS of 3.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis are at a very high risk of infection from cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation as well as mortality. In the present study, we compared the long-term complications and outcomes between subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) and transvenous ICD (TV-ICD) recipients.

Aims: Custom-made partial pelvis replacements (PPRs) are increasingly used in the reconstruction of large acetabular defects and have mainly been designed using a triflange approach, requiring extensive soft-tissue dissection. The monoflange design, where primary intramedullary fixation within the ilium combined with a monoflange for rotational stability, was anticipated to overcome this obstacle. The aim of this study was to evaluate the design with regard to functional outcome, complications, and acetabular reconstruction.

Introduction: Purpose of the study was to answer the question, if there are common fracture or injury characteristics, which help to identify patient at risk for a secondary compartment syndrome.

Materials And Methods: Between 2003 and 2022 all children and adolescents who were treated for a traumatic compartment syndrome in a lower extremity were retrospectively evaluated. Patient's demographics were recorded, the underlying trauma mechanism identified.

Preprocedural assessment of coronary artery disease in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation: Rationale and design of the EASE-IT CT registry.

Background: Invasive coronary angiography (ICA) is the standard for pre-procedural assessment of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). However, it requires hospitalization and can be associated with complications. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) may be a viable alternative to rule out prognostically relevant CAD.

Background: Sarculator and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) nomograms are freely available risk prediction scores for surgically treated patients with primary sarcomas. Due to the rarity of angiosarcomas, these scores have only been tested on small cohorts of angiosarcoma patients. In neither the original patient cohort upon which the Sarculator is based nor in subsequent studies was a distinction made between primary and secondary angiosarcomas, as the app is intended to be applied to primary sarcomas.

Lower extremity amputations (LEAs) are a burdensome complication of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and/or arterial embolism and thrombosis (AET). We assessed the trends in PAD- and/or AET-related LEAs in Romania. This retrospective study (2015-2019) analyzed data on minor and major LEAs in hospitalized patients recorded in the National School for Public Health, Management, and Health Education database.

Background: Aesthetic Surgery is one of the most competitive fields of plastic surgery. Although there is a certain demand for highly educated surgeons in this field, training in cosmetic procedures remains challenging. Akademikliniken Stockholm offers a highly appreciated fellowship program for aesthetic plastic surgeons and trained more than 200 surgeons from all over the world.

Subcutaneous cardioverter defibrillator implanted intermuscularly in patients with end-stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis: 5-year follow-up.

Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term safety and effectiveness of the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) when implanted intermuscularly in patients with end-stage renal disease and hemodialysis.

Methods: This study is a retrospective analysis of 21 consecutive patients implanted with S-ICDs at three experienced centers in Germany with comorbid renal insufficiency requiring hemodialysis, as well as being at risk of sudden cardiac death. The S-ICD was placed intermuscularly in all patients.

Success and safety of deep sedation as a primary anaesthetic approach for transvenous lead extraction: a retrospective analysis.

There is a rising number in complications associated with more cardiac electrical devices implanted (CIED). Infection and lead dysfunction are reasons to perform transvenous lead extraction. An ideal anaesthetic approach has not been described yet.

Stepwise Approach for Transvenous Lead Extraction in a Large Single Centre Cohort.

Background: Infection, lead dysfunction and system upgrades are all reasons that transvenous lead extraction is being performed more frequently. Many centres focus on a single method for lead extraction, which can lead to either lower success rates or higher rates of major complications. We report our experience with a systematic approach from a less invasive to a more invasive strategy without the use of laser sheaths.

Benefit of primary and secondary prophylactic implantable cardioverter defibrillator in elderly patients.

Background: The benefit of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in elderly patients has been questioned. In the present study, we aimed to analyse the outcome of patients of different age groups with ICD implantation.

Methods: We included all patients who received an ICD in our hospital from 2011 to 2020.

Posttraumatic osteomyelitis and the ensuing bone defects are a debilitating complication after open fractures with little therapeutic options. We have recently identified potent osteoanabolic effects of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) signalling and have now tested whether it may beneficially affect bone regeneration after infection. We employed pharmacological S1P lyase inhibition by 4-deoxypyrodoxin (DOP) to raise S1P levels in vivo in an unicortical long bone defect model of posttraumatic osteomyelitis in mice.

Case report: Generalized bullous fixed drug eruption mimicking epidermal necrolysis.

Generalized bullous fixed drug eruption (GBFDE) is the most severe form of fixed drug eruption and can be misdiagnosed as epidermal necrolysis (EN). We report the case of a 42-year-old male patient presenting with more than 50% skin detachment without defined areas of exanthema or erythema and a history of one prior event of EN caused by acetaminophen (paracetamol), allopurinol, or amoxicillin 1.5 years ago.
