Background: The biomechanical effects of joint-line medialization during shoulder surgery are poorly understood. It was therefore the purpose of this study to investigate whether medialization of the joint line especially associated with total shoulder arthroplasty leads to changes in the rotator cuff muscle forces required to stabilize the arm in space.
Methods: A validated computational 3-D rigid body simulation model was used to calculate generated muscle forces, instability ratios, muscle-tendon lengths and moment arms during scapular plane elevation.

Objective: To track the interplay between (micro-) structural changes along the trajectories of nociceptive pathways and its relation to the presence and intensity of neuropathic pain (NP) after spinal cord injury (SCI).
Methods: A quantitative neuroimaging approach employing a multiparametric mapping protocol was used, providing indirect measures of myelination (via contrasts such as magnetisation transfer (MT) saturation, longitudinal relaxation (R1)) and iron content (via effective transverse relaxation rate (R2*)) was used to track microstructural changes within nociceptive pathways. In order to characterise concurrent changes along the entire neuroaxis, a combined brain and spinal cord template embedded in the statistical parametric mapping framework was used.

Athletic performance relies on tendons, which enable movement by transferring forces from muscles to the skeleton. Yet, how load-bearing structures in tendons sense and adapt to physical demands is not understood. Here, by performing calcium (Ca) imaging in mechanically loaded tendon explants from rats and in primary tendon cells from rats and humans, we show that tenocytes detect mechanical forces through the mechanosensitive ion channel PIEZO1, which senses shear stresses induced by collagen-fibre sliding.

Case: The ulcerated recurrent clear cell sarcoma of the forearm with bony invasion of the radius needed an uncontaminated resection and control of infection. A mold was printed based on CT-reconstructed 3D models of the patient's anatomy to create an antibiotic-loaded cement spacer as endoprosthetic replacement used in combination with soft-tissue reconstruction and systemic antibiotics.
Conclusion: This then undescribed novel technique allowed for fast local recovery of the patient's hand function and return to work.

Background: This study aimed to quantify the effect of lower limb rotational parameters on the difference in the tibial-tubercle-trochlear-groove (TTTG) distance when assessed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) in patients with patellar instability. It was hypothesized that an increased native knee rotation angle significantly contributes to an underestimation of TTTG by MRI.
Methods: Forty patients with patellar instability who had undergone standard radiographs, MRI and CT scans were included in this retrospective study.

This paper presents a soft, tendon-driven, robotic glove designed to augment grasp capability and provide rehabilitation assistance for postspinal cord injury patients. The basis of the design is an underactuation approach utilizing postural synergies of the hand to support a large variety of grasps with a single actuator. The glove is lightweight, easy to don, and generates sufficient hand closing force to assist with activities of daily living.

Objectives: 3D preoperative planning of lower limb osteotomies has become increasingly important in light of modern surgical technologies. However, 3D models are usually reconstructed from Computed Tomography data acquired in a non-weight-bearing posture and thus neglecting the positional variations introduced by weight-bearing. Previous studies comparing laser (LEPs) and contact heat evoked potentials (CHEPs) consistently reported higher amplitudes following laser compared to contact heat stimulation. However, none of the studies matched the perceived pain intensity, questioning if the observed difference in amplitude is due to biophysical differences between the two methods or a mismatch in stimulation intensity. The aims of the current study were twofold: (1) to directly compare the brain potentials induced by intensity matched laser and contact heat stimulation and (2) investigate how capsaicin-induced secondary hyperalgesia modulates LEPs and CHEPs.

In this work, we developed and validated a computer method capable of robustly detecting drill breakthrough events and show the potential of deep learning-based acoustic sensing for surgical error prevention. Bone drilling is an essential part of orthopedic surgery and has a high risk of injuring vital structures when over-drilling into adjacent soft tissue. We acquired a dataset consisting of structure-borne audio recordings of drill breakthrough sequences with custom piezo contact microphones in an experimental setup using six human cadaveric hip specimens.

Among the stimuli to which cells are exposed in vivo, it has been shown that tensile deformations induce specific cellular responses in musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and stromal tissues. However, the early response of cells to sustained substrate-based stretch has remained elusive because of the short timescale at which it occurs.
