Background: Distal femur nonunions are well-recognized contributors to persistent functional disability, with limited data regarding their treatment options. In the current study, we asked whether additional medial augmentation plating is a feasible treatment option for patients with aseptic distal femoral nonunion and intact lateral implants.
Methods: We conducted a single-center, retrospective study including 20 patients treated for aseptic distal femoral nonunion between 2002 and 2017.

Purpose: Recurrent anterior shoulder instability caused by critical bone loss of the glenoid is a challenging condition for shoulder surgeons. The purpose of this prospective multicenter trial was to compare the arthroscopic transfer of the coracoid process (Latarjet procedure) with the arthroscopic reconstruction of the glenoid using iliac crest autografts.
Methods: A prospective multi-center trial was performed in nine orthopaedic centres in Austria, Germany and Switzerland between July 2015 and August 2021.

Pompe disease is a rare genetic metabolic disorder caused by mutations in acid-alpha glucoside (GAA) leading to pathological lysosomal glycogen accumulation associated with skeletal muscle weakness, respiratory difficulties and cardiomyopathy, dependent from the GAA residual enzyme activity. This study aimed to investigate early proteomic changes in a mouse model of Pompe disease and identify potential therapeutic pathways using proteomic analysis of skeletal muscles from pre-symptomatic Pompe mice. For this purpose, quadriceps samples of Gaa mutant (Pompe) and wildtype mice, at the age of six weeks, were studied with three biological replicates for each group.

The ability to respond flexibly to an ever-changing environment relies on the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). However, how the OFC associates sensory information with predicted outcomes to enable flexible sensory learning in humans remains elusive. Here, we combine a probabilistic tactile reversal learning task with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate how lateral OFC (lOFC) interacts with the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) to guide flexible tactile learning in humans.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) are small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate posttranscriptional gene expression by repressing messengerRNA-targets. MiRNAs are abundant in many cell types and are secreted into extracellular fluids, protected from degradation by packaging in extracellular vesicles. These circulating miRNAs are easily accessible, disease-specific and sensitive to small changes, which makes them ideal biomarkers for diagnostic, prognostic, predictive or monitoring purposes.

Purpose: Purpose of the study was to report the outcomes after radial head excision in children and adolescents in addition with a review of the current literature.
Methods: We report a series of five children and adolescents, who had undergone a post-traumatic radial head excision. Clinical outcomes were evaluated in terms of elbow/wrist range of motion, stability, deformity and discomforts or restrictions at two follow-up points.

Background: Depending on the therapy approach and disease background, the heterogeneity of muscular tissues complicates the development of targeted gene therapy, where either expression in all muscle types or restriction to only one muscle type is warranted. Muscle specificity can be achieved using promotors mediating tissue specific and sustained physiological expression in the desired muscle types but limited activity in non-targeted tissue. Several muscle specific promotors have been described, but direct comparisons between them are lacking.

Background And Purpose: In these guidelines, we aimed to develop evidence-based recommendations for the use of screening questionnaires and diagnostic tests in patients with neuropathic pain (NeP).
Methods: We systematically reviewed studies providing information on the sensitivity and specificity of screening questionnaires, and quantitative sensory testing, neurophysiology, skin biopsy, and corneal confocal microscopy. We also analysed how functional neuroimaging, peripheral nerve blocks, and genetic testing might provide useful information in diagnosing NeP.

Six types of titanium dioxide particles with defined size, shape, and crystal structure (polymorphic form) were prepared: nanorods (70 × 25 nm), rutile sub-microrods (190 × 40 nm), rutile microspheres (620 nm), anatase nanospheres (100 nm), anatase microspheres (510 nm), and amorphous titania microspheres (620 nm). All particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, dynamic light scattering, infrared spectroscopy, and UV spectroscopy. The sub-toxic cell-biological response to these particles by NR8383 macrophages was assessed.

The assessment of valvular pathologies in multiple valvular heart disease by echocardiography remains challenging. Data on echocardiographic assessment-especially in patients with combined aortic and mitral regurgitation-are rare in the literature. The proposed integrative approach using semi-quantitative parameters to grade the severity of regurgitation often yields inconsistent findings and results in misinterpretation.

Background: Trauma registries are a crucial component of trauma systems, as they could be utilized to perform a benchmarking of quality of care and enable research in a critical but important area of health care. The aim of this study is to compare the performance of two national trauma systems: Germany (TraumaRegister DGU®, TR-DGU) and Israel (Israeli National Trauma Registry, INTR).
Methods: The present study was a retrospective analysis of data from the described above trauma registries in Israel and Germany.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is an intrinsic network of neuronal ganglia in the intestinal tube with about 100 million neurons located in the myenteric plexus and submucosal plexus. These neurons being affected in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, before pathological changes in the central nervous system (CNS) become detectable is currently a subject of discussion. Understanding how to protect these neurons is, therefore, particularly important.

Myofibrillar myopathies (MFM) are a group of chronic muscle diseases pathophysiologically characterized by accumulation of protein aggregates and structural failure of muscle fibers. A subtype of MFM is caused by heterozygous mutations in the filamin C () gene, exhibiting progressive muscle weakness, muscle structural alterations and intracellular protein accumulations. Here, we characterize in depth the pathogenicity of two novel truncating FLNc variants (p.

Purpose: Supra-acetabular bone loss close beyond the sciatic notch is one of the most challenging defect types for stable anatomical reconstruction in revision arthroplasty. Using reconstruction strategies from tumour orthopaedic surgery, we adapted tricortical trans-iliosacral fixation options for custom-made implants in revision arthroplasty. The aim of the present study was to present the clinical and radiological results of this extraordinary pelvic defect reconstruction.

Aims: Evidence suggests that a high-dose statin loading before a percutaneous coronary revascularization improves outcomes in patients receiving long-term statins. This study aimed to analyse the effects of such an additional statin therapy before surgical revascularization.
Methods And Results: This investigator-initiated, randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial was conducted from November 2012 to April 2019 at 14 centres in Germany.
