Tendon injuries caused by overuse or age-related deterioration are frequent. Incomplete knowledge of somatic tendon cell biology and their progenitors has hindered interventions for the effective repair of injured tendons. Here, we sought to compare and contrast distinct tendon-derived cell populations: type I and II tendon stem cells (TSCs) and tenocytes (TNCs).

During the last few years, the superior eyelid endoscopic transorbital approach has been proposed as a new minimally invasive pathway to access skull base lesions, mostly in ophthalmologic, otolaryngologic, and maxillofacial surgeries. However, most neurosurgeons performing minimally invasive endoscopic neurosurgery do not usually employ the orbit as a surgical corridor. The authors undertook this technical and anatomical study to contribute a neurosurgical perspective, exploring the different possibilities of this novel route.

Background: Early neurological deterioration after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is associated with poor prognosis. National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score measured at 24 h after EVT may be a better outcome predictor than other methods that focus on changes in NIHSS. Nevertheless, clinical fluctuations in ischemic stroke patients during the immediate phase after symptoms onset are well recognized.

Objectives: It is uncertain whether concurrent mitral valve repair or replacement for moderate or greater secondary mitral regurgitation at the time of coronary artery bypass graft or aortic valve replacement surgery improves long-term survival.
Methods: Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft and/or aortic valve replacement surgery with moderate or greater secondary mitral regurgitation were reviewed. The effect of concurrent mitral valve repair or replacement upon long-term mortality was assessed while accounting for patient and operative characteristics and mitral regurgitation severity.

Purpose: An increasing Pnumber of individuals with obesity over the age of 60 years require bariatric surgery to treat obesity and its related medical problems. Sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass have already proven their efficacy in this population, but literature lacks reports of long-term results. The aim of this study is to compare long-term results of sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in individuals older than 60 years old.

Musculoskeletal spine disorders, especially low back pain, induce enormous amounts of stress and financial burden on individuals and healthcare systems throughout the world. Disorders of the facet joints in the lumbar spine are the most predominant cause of back pain, resulting in facet joint syndrome (FJS). Conventional treatments for FJS are short-lived and have limitations and side effects.

Background And Objective: Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) has become the gold standard in the treatment of acute stroke patients. However, not all patients respond well to this treatment despite successful attempts. In this study, we aimed to identify variables associated with the failure of improvements following EVT.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant strains requires the urgent discovery of new antibacterial drugs. In this context, an antibacterial screening of a subset of anthelmintic avermectins against gram-positive and gram-negative strains was performed. Selamectin completely inhibited bacterial growth at 6.

Background: Daratumumab, an anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody, is used for treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) and light chain amyloidosis at an intravenous dosage of 16 mg/kg or at a subcutaneous fixed dose of 1800 mg. However, the subcutaneous formulation has only recently been approved in Europe, and real-life data on its safety are still few.
Objective: In this multicenter retrospective real-life experience, we provided evidence for the safety of subcutaneous daratumumab in plasma cell disorders.

There is some controversy on the potential relationship between autoimmune processes and clinicopathologic features as well as prognosis of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), and the evidence is limited by its largely retrospective nature. We examined the relationship between the presence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) and 1-year thyroid cancer treatment outcomes in a large multicenter study using prospectively collected data. We included data from consecutive DTC patients enrolled in the Italian Thyroid Cancer Observatory (ITCO) database (NCT04031339).

Background: Little information is available from real-life studies evaluating the efficacy of apremilast in moderate-to-severe psoriasis.
Methods: In this real-life study, we retrospectively examined a database of 231 patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis treated with apremilast (30 mg twice/day) and followed up for 52 weeks. Disease severity and treatment response were assessed by the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) at baseline and after 16, 24, and 52 weeks.

Tendons are dense connective tissues with a hierarchical polarized structure that respond to and adapt to the transmission of muscle contraction forces to the skeleton, enabling motion and maintaining posture. Tendon injuries, also known as tendinopathies, are becoming more common as populations age and participation in sports/leisure activities increases. The tendon has a poor ability to self-heal and regenerate given its intrinsic, constrained vascular supply and exposure to frequent, severe loading.

Percutaneous repair is a safe and reliable method to restore continuity after acute Achilles tendon ruptures, with a lower incidence of wound complications compared to open techniques. We describe a novel percutaneous cruciate suture performed through 5 stab skin incisions, four of which are longitudinal and parallel to the course of the sural nerve to minimize the risk of injury and one transverse incision at the site of rupture, with a total of 16 suture threads and the knot outside the tendon body, increasing the tensile strength of the suture and minimizing the risk of re-rupture. Clinical studies are necessary to ascertain whether the theoretical advantages of the cruciate suture technique translate into better clinical outcomes compared to established percutaneous techniques.

Background: Whether coeliac disease in adults can be diagnosed with serology alone remains controversial. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of serum anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA (tTG-IgA) in the diagnosis of coeliac disease.
Methods: In this multicentre, prospective cohort study, adult participants (aged ≥18 years) with suspected coeliac disease without IgA deficiency who were not on a gluten-free diet and who had a local serum tTG-IgA measurement, were enrolled from Feb 27, 2018, to Dec 24, 2020, by 14 tertiary referral centres (ten from Europe, two from Asia, one from Oceania, and one from South America) to undergo local endoscopic duodenal biopsy.

Introduction: Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is considered a rare variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a group of acute-onset immune-mediated neuropathies characterized by the classic triad of ataxia, areflexia, and ophthalmoparesis. The present review aimed to provide a detailed and updated profile of all aspects of the syndrome through a collection of published articles on the subject, ranging from the initial description to recent developments related to COVID-19.
Methods: We searched PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases and gray literature, including references from the identified studies, review studies, and conference abstracts on this topic.

Oxidative stress, a condition induced by an excessive amount of free radicals, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), shows several gender-related differences in basal cellular redox state and antioxidant responses. Crenotherapy with sulfureous mineral water can improve the cellular redox state. In this retrospective observational study, gender-related differences in the efficacy of sulfureous crenotherapy in decreasing oxidant species were investigated.

The combination of atezolizumab and nab-paclitaxel is recommended in the EU as first-line treatment for PD-L1-positive metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC), based on the results of phase III IMpassion130 trial. However, 'real-world' data on this combination are limited. The ANASTASE study (NCT05609903) collected data on atezolizumab plus nab-paclitaxel in PD-L1-positive mTNBC patients enrolled in the Italian Compassionate Use Program.
