Objectives: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) has been described as a possible pulmonary involvement in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV), mainly granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). Aim of this cross-sectional Italian national study was to describe demographic, clinical and serological profile of ILD related to MPA and GPA and investigate possible correlations between radiologic patterns of ILD and vasculitis features.

Methods: We enrolled 95 consecutive patients with AAV-ILD, 56 affected by MPA (58.

Background And Objective: Dupilumab blocks the shared receptor component for interleukin (IL)-4/IL-13, key and central drivers of type 2 inflammation in multiple diseases. In phase 3 QUEST (NCT02414854), add-on dupilumab 200 and 300 mg every 2 weeks reduced severe exacerbations, improved pre-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV), and was generally well tolerated in patients with uncontrolled moderate-to-severe asthma. This post hoc analysis assessed dupilumab efficacy in subpopulations of patients with type 2 asthma and high-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a safe and effective treatment for patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) and many neurosurgical centers in Italy have a DBS program. Considering the prevalence of PD and criteria for DBS implantation, about 3200-10,350 PD patients may benefit from DBS in Italy. The global management of patients underwent DBS is complex and it can be supposed that many differences exist between centers in clinical practice.

Department of Medical Sciences, Surgery and Neurosciences, Research Center of Systemic Autoinflammatory Diseases and Behçet's Disease Clinic, University of Siena, Siena, Italy. Electronic address:

Background/objectives: Long-term efficacy and safety of tocilizumab (TCZ) in adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) mostly derive from small case series. Herein we report a registry-based study investigating TCZ efficacy and safety in a cohort of patients with AOSD evaluated by clinical and serum inflammatory markers as well as drug retention rate analysis.

Methods: This is an international multicentre study analyzing data from patients with AOSD regularly enrolled in the AIDA registry.

Purpose: The management of tandem extracranial internal carotid artery and intracranial large vessel occlusion during endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has been under-investigated. We sought to investigate outcomes of AIS patients with tandem occlusion (TO) treated with carotid artery stenting (CAS) compared to those not treated with CAS (no-CAS) during EVT.

Methods: We performed a cohort study using data from AIS patients enrolled in the Italian Registry of Endovascular Treatment in Acute Stroke.

Epigenetics Beyond Fetal Growth Restriction: A Comprehensive Overview.

Mol Diagn Ther

November 2022

Department of Morphology, Surgery and Experimental Medicine, Section of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria S. Anna, University of Ferrara, Cona, Ferrara, Italy.

Fetal growth restriction is a pathological condition occurring when the fetus does not reach the genetically determined growth potential. The etiology of fetal growth restriction is expected to be multifactorial and include fetal, maternal, and placental factors, the latter being the most frequent cause of isolated fetal growth restriction. Severe fetal growth restriction has been related to both an increased risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality, and also a greater susceptibility to developing diseases (especially cardio-metabolic and neurological disorders) later in life.

Background: Treatments involving stem cell (SC) usage represent novel and potentially interesting alternatives in facial nerve reanimation. Current literature includes the use of SC in animal model studies to promote graft survival by enhancing nerve fiber growth, spreading, myelinization, in addition to limiting fibrotic dege neration after surgery. However, the effectiveness of the clinical use of SC in facial nerve reanimation has not been clarified yet.

October 2022

Unit of Immunology, Rheumatology, Allergy and Rare Diseases (UnIRAR), IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan, Italy; Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, University of Florence, Florence, Italy.

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by a complex etiopathogenesis encompassing both host genetic and environmental -infectious/toxic- factors responsible for altered fibrogenesis and diffuse microangiopathy. A wide spectrum of clinical phenotypes may be observed in patients' populations from different geographical areas. We investigated the prevalence of specific clinical and serological phenotypes in patients with definite SSc enrolled at tertiary referral centres in different Italian geographical macro-areas.

The Heidenhain Variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is an uncommon early clinical syndrome of the otherwise regular sporadic CJD, which belongs to the group of prion diseases caused by a transmissible agent, the misfolded form of the prion protein. The most characteristic symptoms of CJD are rapidly progressive cognitive impairment, typical motor manifestations and mental and behavioural changes. Conversely, in the Heidenhain Variant, different kinds of visual disturbances are observed at onset due to microvacuolar spongiform degeneration or, less frequently, confluent spongiform changes in the parieto-occipital area, detectable through brain MRI with hyperintensity in T2-FLAIR or DWI in the same areas.

Article Synopsis
  • Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a rare heart condition often detected in young people, characterized by fainting spells triggered by emotions or exercise without abnormal resting heart rhythms.
  • A 27-year-old woman experienced multiple misdiagnosed fainting episodes, which ultimately resulted in her cardiac arrest outside of the hospital.
  • Following her cardiac arrest, medical investigation including AED records suggested CPVT, leading to the start of beta blocker treatment and the discovery of a novel gene variant in the RYR2 gene linked to her condition.

New evidence for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has emerged during the last year. Specifically, updated guidelines on pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of RA have emphasised the necessity of global patient's care, and have shifted the role of some older drugs, such as glucocorticoids and methotrexate. In addition, the long-term safety of Janus kinase inhibitors was investigated and reinforced.

The need for a subsequent transvenous system in patients implanted with subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

Heart Rhythm

December 2022

Cardiology Unit, IRCCS, Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine, Sant'Orsola Hospital, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

Background: The absence of pacing capabilities may reduce the appeal of subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) devices for patients at risk for conduction disorders or with antitachycardia pacing (ATP)/cardiac resynchronization (CRT) requirements. Reports of rates of S-ICD to transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (TV-ICD) system switch in real-world scenarios are limited.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the need for a subsequent transvenous (TV) device in patients implanted with an S-ICD and its predictors.
