Introduction: Oral cancer (OC) is a disease with a high mortality rate due to its late recognition. Since the oral cavity is easily accessible for visual inspection, enabling early diagnosis, the education of healthcare workers about preventive oral examinations is critical. This research aimed to assess the level of participants' OC knowledge, as well as to raise awareness about this diagnosis.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) continues to be a global public health concern, mostly in the developing countries. However, precise epidemiological data on childhood IDA in Croatia are lacking. In order to establish its frequency, underlying etiologies, the rationale for tertiary care visits, diagnostic practices, and current treatment regimens of IDA, medical records of children referred to pediatric hematologists for iron deficiency in a five-year period at tertiary institutions (Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, Osijek) throughout Croatia were retrospectively analyzed.

Background: Job satisfaction is essential, especially among healthcare professionals like scrub nurses, who often face unique professional challenges. This study aimed to evaluate job satisfaction and its related factors among scrub nurses, shedding light on areas of improvement and highlighting the positive aspects of their roles.
Methods: A detailed study was conducted among a cohort of 31 scrub nurses using a 28-question survey.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and antipsychotic medications both influence polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) homeostasis, and thus PPARα polymorphism may be linked to antipsychotic treatment response. Here we investigated whether the functional leucine 162 valine (L162V) polymorphism in PPARα influenced antipsychotic treatment in a group of psychosis patients (N = 186), as well as in a patient subgroup with risperidone, paliperidone, or combination treatment (N = 65). Antipsychotic-naïve first-episode patients and nonadherent chronic individuals were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction analysis.

Node centrality is one of the most frequently revisited network theoretical concepts, which got many calculation method alternatives, each of them being conceived on different empirical or theoretical network abstractions. The vast majority of centrality measures produced up to date were conceived on static network abstractions (the so-called "snapshot" networks), which arguably are less realistic than dynamic (temporal) network abstractions. The new, temporal node centrality measure that we offer with this article, is based on an uncommon abstraction, of a space-time network derived from service schedules (timetables).

Aims: Inflammageing, the age-related systemic increase of proinflammatory factors, has been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and cancer in the elderly. Chronic inflammation is believed to be a causative factor in the development of diabetic complications. However, exactly how type 2 diabetes impacts the inflammatory state of the immune system is incompletely characterised.

. In this multicentric collaborative study, we aimed to verify whether the selected radiation detectors satisfy the requirements of TRS-483 Code of Practice for relative small field dosimetry in megavoltage photon beams used in radiotherapy, by investigating four dosimetric characteristics. Furthermore, we intended to analyze and complement the recommendations given in TRS-483.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, prompted by the accumulation of misfolded or unfolded proteins, triggers the activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway to restore ER homeostasis. This stress response is implicated in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A biallelic mutation in SPRTN is currently the only known single-gene mutation implicated in the early onset of HCC.

Dendritic cells (DC) play a crucial role in generating and maintaining antiviral immunity. While DC are implicated in the antiviral defense by inducing T cell responses, they can also become infected by Cytomegalovirus (CMV). CMV is not only highly species-specific but also specialized in evading immune protection, and this specialization is in part due to characteristic genes encoded by a given virus.

In recent years, the prevalence of laryngopharyngeal reflux has risen, especially among pediatric patients. The diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux relies on patient history and clinical assessment using the Reflux Finding Score and Reflux Symptom Index as crucial diagnostic tools. Some studies have proposed a link between pepsin and laryngopharyngeal reflux, potentially triggering palatine tonsil hypertrophy.

Comparative "omics" studies have revealed unique aspects of human neurobiology, yet an evolutionary perspective of the brain N-glycome is lacking. We performed multiregional characterization of rat, macaque, chimpanzee, and human brain N-glycomes using chromatography and mass spectrometry and then integrated these data with complementary glycotranscriptomic data. We found that, in primates, the brain N-glycome has diverged more rapidly than the underlying transcriptomic framework, providing a means for rapidly generating additional interspecies diversity.

Patients affected by multiple myeloma (MM) have an increased risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and subsequent coronavirus (20)19 disease (COVID-19)-related death. The changing epidemiological and therapeutic scenarios suggest that there has been an improvement in severity and survival of COVID-19 during the different waves of the pandemic in the general population, but this has not been investigated yet in MM patients. Here we analyzed a large cohort of 1221 patients with MM and confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection observed between February 2020, and August 2022, in the EPICOVIDEHA registry from 132 centers around the world.

A critical feature of the VSV vector platform is the ability to pseudotype the virus with different glycoproteins from other viruses, thus altering cellular tropism of the recombinant virus. The route of administration is critical in triggering local and systemic immune response and protection. Most of the vaccine platforms used at the forefront are administered by intramuscular injection.

Patients with prostate cancer are often in psychological distress and pain preoperatively. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of preoperative anxiety, depression and pain on the quality of postoperative recovery and acute postoperative pain after radical prostatectomy. One hundred and sixty patients scheduled for open or laparoscopic radical prostatectomy were enrolled in a prospective observational study.

In this perspective article, we highlight the possible applicability of genetic testing in Parkinson's disease and dystonia patients treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS). DBS, a neuromodulatory technique employing electrical stimulation, has historically targeted motor symptoms in advanced PD and dystonia, yet its precise mechanisms remain elusive. Genetic insights have emerged as potential determinants of DBS efficacy.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the leading causes of end-stage renal disease. In spite of the recent tremendous progress in the understanding of ADPKD pathogenesis, the molecular mechanisms of the disease remain incompletely understood. Considering emerging new targeted therapies for ADPKD, it has become crucial to disclose easily measurable and widely available biomarkers for identifying patients with future rapid disease progression.

Acromegaly and gigantism are hormonal disorders which develop as a consequence of chronic growth hormone hypersecretion. The prefix pseudo- is used to describe a certain clinical condition without a clearly proven characteristic of pathophysiological mechanism and basic biochemical features; pseudoacromegaly or acromegaloidism match the definition from above. In this case reports, we will try to provide a concise overview of diagnostic evaluation of acromegaloid physical appearance, while discussing two cases of patients who have similar clinical acromegaloid features as the first sign of the disease but have completely different etiologic backgrounds of their acromegalic appearance.
