Clinical parameters of death and heart failure hospitalization in biventricular systolic dysfunction assessed via cardiac magnetic resonance.

Int J Cardiol

January 2025

Centro Cardiologico Monzino IRCCS, Milan, Italy; Dipartimento di Scienze Biomediche, Chirurgiche e Odontoiatriche, University of Milan, Milan, Italy; Department of Biomedical, Surgical and Dental Sciences, University of Milan, Milan, Italy. Electronic address:

Aims: While factors associated with adverse events are well elucidated in setting of isolated left ventricular dysfunction, clinical and imaging-based prognosticators of adverse outcomes are lacking in context of biventricular dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to establish role of clinical variables in prognosis of biventricular heart failure (HF), as assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Methods: Study cohort consisted of 840 patients enrolled in DERIVATE registry with coexisting CMR-derived right ventricular (RV) and left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, as defined by RV and LV ejection fractions ≤45 % and ≤ 50 %, respectively.

Our study evaluated the possible interference of Burosumab (human recombinant monoclonal antibody directed against N-terminal domain of FGF23) on the immunoassay of intact FGF23 (iFGF23) with the Liaison XL. The analytical method uses three different antibodies, one of which directed against the N-terminal portion of FGF23. The evaluation of the method accuracy involved the fully automated execution of a dilution test on EDTA plasma from 5 subjects who had not received any monoclonal antibody (mAb), 20 EDTA plasma from patients treated with Burosumab, and 2 EDTA plasma from subjects who had not received any mAb in witch an adequate volume of Burosumab had been added in vitro.

Introduction: Although familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a relevant disease in countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, there are still few reports from Italy.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with FMF diagnosed according to the EuroFever/PRINTO classification criteria in three pediatric rheumatology referral centers in central-southern Italy. Logistic regression analysis assessed the associations between age at disease onset and symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on anti-synthetase syndrome (ASSD), a rare autoimmune disease, aiming to identify clinical and lab features for potential classification criteria.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 948 ASSD patients and 1077 control subjects, finding that certain symptoms like arthritis and specific autoantibodies were more common in ASSD cases.
  • - The findings will assist clinicians in diagnosing ASSD and contribute to creating more standardized, data-driven classification criteria for the syndrome.

Background: Psychotic symptoms in adolescence are associated with social adversity and genetic risk for schizophrenia. This gene-environment interplay may be mediated by personality, which also develops during adolescence. We hypothesized that (i) personality development predicts later Psychosis Proneness Signs (PPS), and (ii) personality traits mediate the association between genetic risk for schizophrenia, social adversities, and psychosis.

Coloproctological diseases, including both benign and malignant conditions, are among the most common diagnoses in clinical practice. Several disorders affect both men and women, while others are unique to women, or women are at a greater risk of developing them. This is due to anatomical, biological, and social conditions and also due to females' exclusive capabilities of reproduction and pregnancy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The case discusses a young patient with type 1 diabetes who has multiple oral cavity issues, including an impacted canine and cervical root resorption of an incisor, highlighting the link between genetic variants and oral diseases.
  • - Genetic testing identified pathogenic variants in specific interleukin and VDR receptor genes, along with the presence of harmful periodontal bacteria, which guided treatment options.
  • - Treatment involved intentional replantation of the affected incisor, orthodontic methods to address the impacted canine, and ongoing non-invasive periodontal care, demonstrating the importance of genetic analysis in creating a multidisciplinary treatment plan.

MP0250 is a designed ankyrin repeat protein that specifically inhibits both vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), aiming at potentiating cancer therapy by disrupting the tumour microenvironment. Encouraging results from a phase 1 trial of MP0250 in patients with solid tumours prompted further investigation in multiple myeloma (MM) as both MP0250 targets are reported to be drivers of MM pathogenesis. In this open-label, single-arm phase 1b/2 study (NCT03136653) in patients with proteasome inhibitor- and/or immunomodulatory drug-relapsed or refractory MM, MP0250 was administered every 3 weeks with standard bortezomib/dexamethasone regimen.

Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are recommended for the management of thrombosis prophylaxis, especially in patients with atrial fibrillation. As substrates of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4 and/or P-glycoprotein, they are implicated in potential drug-drug interactions. NS5A/NS5B inhibitors are direct-acting agents (DAAs) against the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection that exert a mild inhibition of P-glycoprotein without effects on CYP3A4.

Management of cytotoxic chemotherapy in patients undergoing dialysis: a still unresolved issue of onconephrology.

J Nephrol

October 2024

Onconephrology Outpatients Clinic, Division of Nephrology and Dialysis, ASST Fatebenefratelli Sacco, Fatebenefratelli Hospital, Piazzale Principessa Clotilde 3, 20121, Milan, Italy.

The incidence of tumors increases significantly in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly among those undergoing dialysis. This dialysis-associated condition not only impacts therapy but also influences the prognosis of oncological patients, contributing to heightened mortality rates related to both cancer and non-cancer causes. Importantly, it stands as a primary factor leading to suboptimal utilization of therapies.
