Antimicrobial Stewardship: A Correct Management to Reduce Sepsis in NICU Settings.

Antibiotics (Basel)

June 2024

Department of Health Promotion, Mother and Child Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties, University of Palermo, 90127 Palermo, Italy.

The discovery of antimicrobial drugs has led to a significant increase in survival from infections; however, they are very often prescribed and administered, even when their use is not necessary and appropriate. Newborns are particularly exposed to infections due to the poor effectiveness and the immaturity of their immune systems. For this reason, in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), the use of antimicrobial drugs is often decisive and life-saving, and it must be started promptly to ensure its effectiveness in consideration of the possible rapid evolution of the infection towards sepsis.

J Pers Med

April 2024

Division of Cardiology, Department of Health Promotion, Mother and Child Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties (PROMISE) "G. D'Alessandro", University Hospital Paolo Giaccone, University of Palermo, 90127 Palermo, Italy.

Cardiovascular diseases represent the leading cause of death in the world and are subject to limitations in prevention strategies despite the use of very effective drugs. The concept of residual risk (RR) is intrinsically related to that of global risk of which it represents a very significant percentage. In the cardiovascular field, the term RR refers to the probability of incurring a major cardiovascular event, despite adequate control of the risk factors present in the individual patient.

Background: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a type II transmembrane glycoprotein overexpressed on the surface of tumor cells in most of the patients affected by prostate adenocarcinoma (PCa). However, PSMA expression has also been demonstrated in the endothelial cells of newly formed vessels of various solid tumors, suggesting a role for PSMA in neoangiogenesis. In this scenario, gallium-68 (Ga) or fluoro-18 (F)-labeled PSMA positron emission tomography (PET) may play a role in tumors other than PCa, generally evaluated employing other radiopharmaceuticals targeting different pathways.

Division of Cardiology, Department of Health Promotion, Mother and Child Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties (PROMISE) "G. D'Alessandro", University Hospital Paolo Giaccone, University of Palermo, 90133 Palermo, Italy.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading global cause of mortality and are primarily driven by atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Their pathogenesis involves multi-factorial mechanisms, among which low-density lipoprotein (LDL) plays a causative role. Recent ESC/EAS guidelines advocate for a shift toward new risk estimation algorithms that better emphasize non-fatal cardiovascular events, lifetime risk prediction, and tailored pharmacological approaches, including statin + ezetimibe and triple therapy, in specific cases.

Anthracycline-related cardiotoxicity in patients with breast cancer harboring mutational signature of homologous recombination deficiency (HRD).

ESMO Open

January 2024

Department of Surgical, Oncological and Oral Sciences, Section of Medical Oncology, University of Palermo, Palermo. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the role of BRCA and other homologous recombination repair (HRR) genes in DNA damage repair in heart cells, particularly in breast cancer patients receiving anthracycline-based chemotherapy.
  • In a cohort of 503 patients, those with pathogenic variants in BRCA or other HRR genes showed a significant decrease in heart function, measured by left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), after chemotherapy.
  • The findings suggest that genetic mutations in HRR genes heighten the risk of heart toxicity from cancer treatment, indicating the need for careful monitoring in these patients.
