Persistent sciatic artery (PSA) is a rare vascular anomaly classified into five types according to the Pillet and Gauffre classification system. Although PSA may be detected as an incidental finding, symptomatic cases account for approximately 80% of all cases and have variable clinical presentations. Due to the frequent ischemic and aneurysmal complications, PSAs can lead to limb-threatening conditions requiring prompt identification and adequate treatment management.

Acknowledging the increasing use of whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) in the oncological setting, we conducted a narrative review focusing on practical aspects of the examination and providing a synthesis of various acquisition protocols described in the literature. Firstly, we addressed the topic of patient preparation, emphasizing methods to enhance examination acceptance. This included strategies for reducing anxiety and patient distress, improving staff-patient interactions, and increasing overall patient comfort.

  • Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a new method for treating atrial fibrillation (AF) that focuses on ablating heart tissue while minimizing harm to nearby structures.
  • In the MANIFEST-17K study, data from 106 centers involved 17,642 patients and showed no serious complications like esophageal damage, with only a 1% major complication rate.
  • The results suggest that PFA has a strong safety profile and may change how AF is treated, compared to traditional thermal ablation methods.

Perampanel in post-stroke epilepsy: Clinical practice data from the PERampanel as Only Concomitant antiseizure medication (PEROC) study.

J Neurol Sci

July 2024

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, Magna Græcia University of Catanzaro, Italy; Regional Epilepsy Centre, Great Metropolitan "Bianchi-Melacrino-Morelli" Hospital, Reggio Calabria, Italy. Electronic address:

Introduction: Post-stroke epilepsy (PSE) is one of the most common causes of acquired epilepsy. Nevertheless, there is limited evidence regarding the clinical profile of antiseizure medications (ASMs) in PSE. This study aims to evaluate the 12-month effectiveness and tolerability of perampanel (PER) used as only add-on treatment in patients with PSE in a real-world setting.

Application of AI in urolithiasis risk of infection: a scoping review.

Minerva Urol Nephrol

June 2024

Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine Division, Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Parma, Parma, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in urology aims to enhance diagnostic processes and improve prognosis for patients, particularly those with urolithiasis who are at risk for serious infections.
  • A systematic scoping review was conducted to evaluate existing literature on AI applications for predicting infectious complications in urolithiasis, yielding nine relevant studies from an initial search of 467 articles, primarily published between 2021 and 2023.
  • The reviewed studies showed promising results, with AI models like random forests and neural networks demonstrating superior performance in predicting infections compared to traditional methods, although further research and validation are necessary before widespread clinical implementation.

(1) : Type 2 diabetes is a major cause of incidences and the progression of peripheral artery disease (PAD). Bone marrow edema (BME) is an important finding suggestive of underlying bone inflammation in non-traumatic diabetic patients with PAD. Our aim was to evaluate the presence, severity, and clinical implications of BME detected by virtual non-calcium application (VNCa) of dual-energy CT angiography (DE-CTA).

Purpose: To describe a Delphi consensus for the realization of a structured radiology request form for patients undergoing musculoskeletal imaging.

Methods: A steering committee (four radiologists, a rheumatologist and an orthopedic surgeon) proposed a form to an expert panel (30 members, ten radiologists, ten rheumatologists and ten orthopedic surgeons). Through an online survey, the panelists voted on their level of agreement with the statements of the form using a 10-point Likert scale (1: no agreement; 10: total agreement) in a three-round process.

Article Synopsis
  • Post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is a significant risk after liver surgery, linked to the health of the remaining liver tissue and portal hypertension severity.
  • This study examines whether keeping the round ligament (RL) intact during minimally invasive liver surgery (MILS) can lessen portal hypertension and lower the chances of PHLF and ascites in cirrhotic patients.
  • Results show that patients who had their RL preserved had notably lower rates of severe PHLF (7.0% vs. 20.5%) and ascites (5.8% vs. 18.2%) compared to those with the ligament divided, suggesting RL preservation may be beneficial in these surgeries.

Background And Objective: In recent years, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown excellent results in the study of the prostate gland. MRI has indeed shown to be advantageous in the prostate cancer (PCa) detection, as in guiding targeting biopsy, improving its diagnostic yield. Although current acquisition protocols provide for multiparametric acquisition, recent evidence has shown that biparametric protocols can be non-inferior in PCa detection.

Lung cancer has one of the worst morbidity and fatality rates of any malignant tumour. Most lung cancers are discovered in the middle and late stages of the disease, when treatment choices are limited, and patients' survival rate is low. The aim of lung cancer screening is the identification of lung malignancies in the early stage of the disease, when more options for effective treatments are available, to improve the patients' outcomes.

An overview on multimodal imaging for the diagnostic workup of pleural mesothelioma.

Jpn J Radiol

January 2024

Division of Radiology, Istituto Nazionale Tumori IRCCS Fondazione Pascale-IRCCS di Napoli, 80131, Naples, Italy.

Pleural mesothelioma (PM) is an aggressive disease that has a strong causal relationship with asbestos exposure and represents a major challenge from both a diagnostic and therapeutic viewpoint. Despite recent improvements in patient care, PM typically carries a poor outcome, especially in advanced stages. Therefore, a timely and effective diagnosis taking advantage of currently available imaging techniques is essential to perform an accurate staging and dictate the most appropriate treatment strategy.
