Introduction: Lepidic growth is considered noninvasive in lung nonmucinous adenocarcinoma, whereas other patterns are invasive. Considerable interobserver variability in assessing "invasion" has been reported. We assessed the utility of cytokeratin 7 (CK7) stain and recently proposed International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer criteria to improve assessment of noninvasion in lung adenocarcinoma.

Cancer vaccines strive to induce robust, antigen-targeted, T-cell-mediated immune responses but have struggled to produce meaningful regression in solid tumors. An autologous cell vaccine, SQZ-PBMC-HPV, was developed by SQZ Biotechnologies using microfluidic squeezing technology to load PBMCs with HPV16 E6 and E7 antigens in HLA-A*02+ patients. The SQZ-PBMC-HPV-101 Phase 1 trial (NCT04084951) enrolled patients with incurable HPV16+ cancers.

Stem cell allografting for chronic Myeloid leukemia in the tyrosine kinase era - forgotten but not gone.

Leuk Lymphoma

June 2024

Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology, University Health Network - Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Due to the remarkable success of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) is not first-line treatment for delivering durable, long-term survival. Consequently, alloSCT is reserved for patients with TKI-resistant or TKI-intolerant chronic phase CML (CP-CML) and advanced phase CML (AP-CML). Advances in transplant technology, such as high-resolution HLA typing, introduction of reduced intensity conditioning and increased alternative donor availability, coupled with improved supportive care, have significantly reduced transplant-related mortality and expanded the pool of transplant-eligible patients.

Development of novel biomarkers for diagnosis of disease and assessment of treatment efficacy utilizes a wide range of biospecimens for discovery research. The fitness of biospecimens for the purpose of biomarker development depends on the clinical characteristics of the donor and on a number of critical and potentially uncontrolled pre-analytical variables. Pre-analytical factors influence the reliability of the biomarkers to be analyzed and can seriously impact analytic outcomes.

Purpose: Patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) typically undergo staging tests at presentation. If staging does not detect metastases, treatment consists of curative intent combined modality therapy (neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery, and regional radiation). Positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) may detect more asymptomatic distant metastases, but the evidence is based on uncontrolled studies.

Background: Poorly managed cancer treatment toxicities negatively impact quality of life, but little research has examined patient activation in self-management (SM) early in cancer treatment.

Methods: We undertook a pilot randomized trial to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of the SMARTCare (Self-Management and Activation to Reduce Treatment Toxicities) intervention. This intervention included an online SM education program (I-Can Manage) plus 5 sessions of telephone cancer coaching in patients initiating systemic therapy for lymphoma or colorectal or lung cancer at 3 centers in Ontario, Canada, relative to a usual care control group.

Exploring the value of using patient-oriented MRI reports in clinical practice - a pilot study.

Support Care Cancer

August 2022

University Health Network and Sinai Health System - Joint Department of Medical Imaging (JDMI), University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

Purpose: Standard radiology reports (SRR) are designed to communicate information between doctors. With many patients having instantaneous access to SRRs on patient portals, interpretation without guidance from doctors can cause anxiety and panic. In this pilot study, we designed a patient-centred prostate MRI template report (PACERR) to address some of these challenges and tested whether PACERRs improve patient knowledge and experience.
