Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Department of Psychiatry, Lions Gate Hospital - Vancouver Coastal Health, British Columbia, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: To clarify if blood proteins can predict disease progression among individuals at clinical high-risk of severe mental illness (CHR-SMI), we developed a statistical model incorporating clinical and blood protein markers to distinguish the transition group (who developed severe mental illness) (CHR-SMI-T) and from non-transition group (CHR-SMI-NT) at baseline.

Methods: Ninety individuals (74 at CHR-SMI: 16 patients) were monitored for ≤4 years and were the focus of predictive models. Three predictive models (1 [100 clinical variables], 2 [158 peptides], and 3 [100 clinical variables +158 peptides]) were evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) values.

As a result of the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan in fall 2021, 1,260 Afghan evacuees arrived in Minnesota between October 2021 and February 2022. Several contextual factors including an overtaxed health system under duress from COVID-19 and uncertain benefit eligibility prompted a coordinated public health response to appropriately address the acute and pressing medical concerns of our new neighbors. This community case study describes the State of Minnesota's cross-sectoral response that created a welcoming environment, identified public health concerns, and addressed acute medical needs.

Background: The objective was to compare sevoflurane, a volatile sedation agent with potential bronchodilatory properties, with propofol on respiratory mechanics in critically ill patients with COPD exacerbation.

Methods: Prospective study in an ICU enrolling critically ill intubated patients with severe COPD exacerbation and comparing propofol and sevoflurane after 1:1 randomisation. Respiratory system mechanics (airway resistance, PEEPi, trapped volume, ventilatory ratio and respiratory system compliance), gas exchange, vitals, safety and outcome were measured at inclusion and then until H48.

Introduction: In over 50 years since the genetic counseling (GC) profession began, a systematic study of GC communication skills and patient-reported outcomes in actual sessions across multiple clinical specialties has never been conducted. To optimize GC quality and improve efficiency of care, the field must first be able to comprehensively measure GC skills and determine which skills are most critical to achieving positive patient experiences and outcomes. This study aims to characterise GC communication skills using a novel and pragmatic measure and link variations in communication skills to patient-reported outcomes, across clinical specialties and with patients from diverse backgrounds in the USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The document outlines the goal of creating standardized research definitions for invasive fungal diseases (IFD) in adult ICU patients without typical risk factors for these infections.
  • A panel of experts assessed existing definitions and lab tests for IFD, using the RAND/UCLA method to reach a consensus on new definitions.
  • Key standardized definitions were made for conditions like invasive candidiasis and aspergillosis, but more data is needed for other IFDs, with the intent to enhance future research studies.

Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, Program in Health Disparities Research, University of Minnesota Health, 717 Delaware St. SE, Suite 166, Minneapolis, MN, 55414, USA.

Adolescent school connectedness generally protects from risk behaviors such as tobacco use; however, its relationship to e-cigarette use is unclear. This study examines the relationship between adolescent school connectedness and e-cigarette susceptibility in a diverse longitudinal sample. This secondary analysis of a school-based intervention surveyed 608 middle (66%) and high school (34%) students from 10 schools at 3 time points over 1 year.

Relational continuity may give better clinical outcomes in patients with serious mental illness - a systematic review.

BMC Psychiatry

December 2023

SBU - Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background: Continuity of care is considered important for results of treatment of serious mental illness (SMI). Yet, evidence of associations between relational continuity and different medical and social outcomes is sparse. Research approaches differ considerably regarding how to best assess continuity as well as which outcome to study.

Introduction: Notably, few studies have evaluated the recent changes in the prevalence of allergic diseases in young adults. Studies examining the risk of allergy in two populations with similar social backgrounds, other than the region in which they live, are rare.

Methods: First-year students from Hokkaido University were enrolled in this study between 2011 and 2019.

Women across the globe have been subject to female genital cutting (FGC), with the highest rates in Somalia. FGC can result in sexual concerns, especially sexual pain and lower pleasure. Due to ongoing civil war and climate disasters, there is a large number of Somali immigrants and refugees living in countries where healthcare providers may be unfamiliar with the impact of FGC.

Maternal and perinatal outcomes in primiparous singleton pregnancies conceived with assisted reproductive technology in British Columbia.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada; Division of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined the risks associated with primiparous singleton pregnancies conceived through assisted reproductive technology (ART) compared to those conceived naturally, using data from British Columbia.
  • The research found that pregnancies achieved via ART had higher odds of complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, preterm birth, low birth weight, and a need for neonatal intensive care.
  • However, there was no significant difference in the odds of stillbirth or low Apgar scores between the two groups, suggesting that while ART is linked to certain risks, not all maternal and neonatal outcomes are adversely affected.

J Assist Reprod Genet

November 2023

Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, McGill University Health Care Center, 888 Boul. de Maisonneuve E #200, Montreal, QC, H2L 4S8, Canada.

Purpose: To provide agreed-upon guidelines on the management of a hyper-responsive patient undergoing ovarian stimulation (OS) METHODS: A literature search was performed regarding the management of hyper-response to OS for assisted reproductive technology. A scientific committee consisting of 4 experts discussed, amended, and selected the final statements. A priori, it was decided that consensus would be reached when ≥66% of the participants agreed, and ≤3 rounds would be used to obtain this consensus.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection, causing multiple cancers, including cervical, penile, and anal. Infection and subsequent health risks caused by HPV can be diminished by HPV vaccination. Unfortunately, vaccination rates among Hmong Americans are substantially lower than those among other racial and ethnic groups, despite having higher cervical cancer rates than non-Hispanic White women.

Global health equity is at a historically tenuous nexus complicated by economic inequality, climate change, mass migration, racialized violence, and global pandemics. Social medicine, collective health, and structural competency are interdisciplinary fields with their own histories and fragmentary implementation in health equity movements situated both locally and globally. In this paper, we review these three fields' historical backgrounds, theoretical underpinnings, and contemporary contributions to global health equity.

Ascites in patients with end-stage liver disease and resultant portal hypertension worsens prognosis and accelerates mortality of up to 40% within one year and 50% within two years. In case of refractory ascites, median survival often does not exceed six months due to the development of complications including spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, hyponatremia and renal failure. Additionally, ascites hinders quality of life (QOL) and its management poses a challenge.

Objectives: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is highly prevalent in Somali immigrant children and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels are elevated in this population compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Current self-management diabetes education has not been tailored to this population. We aimed to improve delivery of T1D education to Somali immigrants by developing and testing a culturally-appropriate video-based curriculum.
