Identifying clinical and proteomic markers for early diagnosis and prognosis prediction of major psychiatric disorders.

Background: To clarify if blood proteins can predict disease progression among individuals at clinical high-risk of severe mental illness (CHR-SMI), we developed a statistical model incorporating clinical and blood protein markers to distinguish the transition group (who developed severe mental illness) (CHR-SMI-T) and from non-transition group (CHR-SMI-NT) at baseline.

Methods: Ninety individuals (74 at CHR-SMI: 16 patients) were monitored for ≤4 years and were the focus of predictive models. Three predictive models (1 [100 clinical variables], 2 [158 peptides], and 3 [100 clinical variables +158 peptides]) were evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) values.

Welcoming new neighbors: Minnesota's rapid response model to address the urgent health needs of Afghan newcomers, 2021-2022.

As a result of the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan in fall 2021, 1,260 Afghan evacuees arrived in Minnesota between October 2021 and February 2022. Several contextual factors including an overtaxed health system under duress from COVID-19 and uncertain benefit eligibility prompted a coordinated public health response to appropriately address the acute and pressing medical concerns of our new neighbors. This community case study describes the State of Minnesota's cross-sectoral response that created a welcoming environment, identified public health concerns, and addressed acute medical needs.

Early and late effects of volatile sedation with sevoflurane on respiratory mechanics of critically ill COPD patients.

Background: The objective was to compare sevoflurane, a volatile sedation agent with potential bronchodilatory properties, with propofol on respiratory mechanics in critically ill patients with COPD exacerbation.

Methods: Prospective study in an ICU enrolling critically ill intubated patients with severe COPD exacerbation and comparing propofol and sevoflurane after 1:1 randomisation. Respiratory system mechanics (airway resistance, PEEPi, trapped volume, ventilatory ratio and respiratory system compliance), gas exchange, vitals, safety and outcome were measured at inclusion and then until H48.

Linking genetic counseling communication skills to patient outcomes and experiences using a community-engagement and provider-engagement approach: research protocol for the GC-PRO mixed methods sequential explanatory study.

Introduction: In over 50 years since the genetic counseling (GC) profession began, a systematic study of GC communication skills and patient-reported outcomes in actual sessions across multiple clinical specialties has never been conducted. To optimize GC quality and improve efficiency of care, the field must first be able to comprehensively measure GC skills and determine which skills are most critical to achieving positive patient experiences and outcomes. This study aims to characterise GC communication skills using a novel and pragmatic measure and link variations in communication skills to patient-reported outcomes, across clinical specialties and with patients from diverse backgrounds in the USA.

Associations between body weight change and incidence of major depressive disorder in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a nationwide longitudinal follow-up cohort study of 1.1 million.

Background: Comorbid depression substantially affects the management of glycemia and diabetes-related complications among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this study, we sought to determine the association between weight change over 4 years and depression risk among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study from the National Health Insurance Services of Korea included 1 111 345 patients with type 2 diabetes who were divided into groups according to body weight change over 4 years.

School Connectedness and Adolescent E-cigarette Susceptibility in an Urban Sample of Middle and High School Students.

Adolescent school connectedness generally protects from risk behaviors such as tobacco use; however, its relationship to e-cigarette use is unclear. This study examines the relationship between adolescent school connectedness and e-cigarette susceptibility in a diverse longitudinal sample. This secondary analysis of a school-based intervention surveyed 608 middle (66%) and high school (34%) students from 10 schools at 3 time points over 1 year.

Relational continuity may give better clinical outcomes in patients with serious mental illness - a systematic review.

Background: Continuity of care is considered important for results of treatment of serious mental illness (SMI). Yet, evidence of associations between relational continuity and different medical and social outcomes is sparse. Research approaches differ considerably regarding how to best assess continuity as well as which outcome to study.

Nine-Year Trend in the Prevalence of Allergic Diseases and Their Associated Factors in Young Adults.

Introduction: Notably, few studies have evaluated the recent changes in the prevalence of allergic diseases in young adults. Studies examining the risk of allergy in two populations with similar social backgrounds, other than the region in which they live, are rare.

Methods: First-year students from Hokkaido University were enrolled in this study between 2011 and 2019.

Women across the globe have been subject to female genital cutting (FGC), with the highest rates in Somalia. FGC can result in sexual concerns, especially sexual pain and lower pleasure. Due to ongoing civil war and climate disasters, there is a large number of Somali immigrants and refugees living in countries where healthcare providers may be unfamiliar with the impact of FGC.

Associations of High-Density Lipoprotein Functionality with Coronary Plaque Characteristics in Diabetic Patients with Coronary Artery Disease: Integrated Backscatter Intravascular Ultrasound Analysis.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) functionality has been reported to be associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, little is known about the impact of HDL functionality on coronary atherosclerosis. Thirty-eight type 2 diabetic patients with CAD who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention were examined.

Purpose: To provide agreed-upon guidelines on the management of a hyper-responsive patient undergoing ovarian stimulation (OS) METHODS: A literature search was performed regarding the management of hyper-response to OS for assisted reproductive technology. A scientific committee consisting of 4 experts discussed, amended, and selected the final statements. A priori, it was decided that consensus would be reached when ≥66% of the participants agreed, and ≤3 rounds would be used to obtain this consensus.

Evaluating Human Papillomavirus eHealth in Hmong Adolescents to Promote Vaccinations: Pilot Feasibility Study.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection, causing multiple cancers, including cervical, penile, and anal. Infection and subsequent health risks caused by HPV can be diminished by HPV vaccination. Unfortunately, vaccination rates among Hmong Americans are substantially lower than those among other racial and ethnic groups, despite having higher cervical cancer rates than non-Hispanic White women.

Toward an Integrated Framework in Health and Human Rights Education: Transformative Pedagogies in Social Medicine, Collective Health, and Structural Competency.

Global health equity is at a historically tenuous nexus complicated by economic inequality, climate change, mass migration, racialized violence, and global pandemics. Social medicine, collective health, and structural competency are interdisciplinary fields with their own histories and fragmentary implementation in health equity movements situated both locally and globally. In this paper, we review these three fields' historical backgrounds, theoretical underpinnings, and contemporary contributions to global health equity.

Association between depressive symptoms and the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among US adults.

Depression is a preventable and treatable mental health condition. Therefore, there are important clinical implications for identifying people with the highest mortality risk in a nationally representative sample. This study included 26,207 participants aged ≥18 years from the 2005-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in USA.

Methods: A literature search was performed regarding hyper-response to ovarian stimulation for assisted reproductive technology. A scientific committee consisting of 5 experts discussed, amended, and selected the final statements in the questionnaire for the first round of the Delphi consensus. The questionnaire was distributed to 31 experts, 22 of whom responded (with representation selected for global coverage), each anonymous to the others.

Novel Innovations in Ascites Management.

Ascites in patients with end-stage liver disease and resultant portal hypertension worsens prognosis and accelerates mortality of up to 40% within one year and 50% within two years. In case of refractory ascites, median survival often does not exceed six months due to the development of complications including spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, hyponatremia and renal failure. Additionally, ascites hinders quality of life (QOL) and its management poses a challenge.

A picture is worth a thousand words: A culturally-tailored video-based approach to diabetes education in Somali families of children with type 1 diabetes.

Objectives: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is highly prevalent in Somali immigrant children and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels are elevated in this population compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Current self-management diabetes education has not been tailored to this population. We aimed to improve delivery of T1D education to Somali immigrants by developing and testing a culturally-appropriate video-based curriculum.

Background: Hmong men in Minnesota exhibit a high prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia. Although evidence of vitamin C's effectiveness as a treatment for gout is mixed, analysis of therapeutic benefit based on an individual's multiomic signature may identify predictive markers of treatment success.

Objectives: The primary objective of the Hmong Microbiome ANd Gout, Obesity, Vitamin C (HMANGO-C) study was to assess the effectiveness of vitamin C on serum urate in Hmong adults with and without gout/hyperuricemia.

Pregnancy outcomes in women with anorexia nervosa: a population-based study and analysis of a matched cohort.

Research Question: What implications does anorexia nervosa have on pregnancy outcomes in a US population?

Design: A retrospective, population-based study using data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample. A dataset of all deliveries between 2004 and 2014 inclusively was created. The population was divided into women with anorexia nervosa (n = 214) and women without anorexia nervosa (n = 9,096,574), and a cohort matched 1:4 with anorexia nervosa for age, race, medical insurance type and income quartile.

The relationship of smoking with gestational diabetes: a large population-based study and a matched comparison.

Research Question: Is smoking associated with an increased risk for gestational diabetes (GDM)?

Design: A retrospective population-based study using data from the United States Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample. A dataset of all deliveries that took place between 2004 and 2014 (inclusive) was created. The population was divided into two groups according to smoking status and matched 1:1 for age, obesity, race, insurance type, thyroid disease, drug use and chronic hypertension.
