Background: Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) after major abdominal surgery leads to poor outcomes. The Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) may aid in managing intraoperative hemodynamic instability. This study assessed if HPI-guided therapy reduces moderate-to-severe AKI incidence in moderate-to-high-risk elective abdominal surgery patients.

There is a pressing medical need for improved treatments in skin fibrosis including keloids and hypertrophic scars (HTS). This study aimed to characterize the role of phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), specifically PDE4B in fibrotic skin remodeling in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, effects of PDE4A-D (Roflumilast) or PDE4B (siRNA) inhibition on TGFβ1-induced myofibroblast differentiation and dedifferentiation were studied in normal (NHDF) and keloid (KF) human dermal fibroblasts.

Background And Purpose: IL-11 is a member of the IL-6 family of cytokine initially considered as haematopoietic and cytoprotective factor. Recent evidence indicates that IL-11 promotes lung fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension in animal models and is elevated in lung tissue of patients with pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension. Fibrocytes are bone marrow-derived circulating cells that participate in lung fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension, but the role of IL-11 on fibrocytes is unknown.

IL-11 is linked to fibrotic diseases, but its role in pulmonary hypertension is unclear. We examined IL-11's involvement in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (iPAH). Using samples from control (n = 20) and iPAH (n = 6) subjects, we assessed IL-11 and IL-11Rα expression and localization through RT-qPCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence.

Objective: In order to establish the ideal anesthetic protocol in thyroplasty type I surgery, where the intraoperative voice test is used to guide the medialization of the paralyzed fold, we have studied the effects of a sedation with midazolam premedication and adjusted intravenous doses of propofol and remifentanil on voice quality in patients without vocal fold pathology undergoing otorhinolaryngology surgery other than thyroplasty.
Study Design: Prospective cross-sectional study included 40 adult patients.
Method: A voice recording was performed when the patient was fully awake and when an appropriate level of conscious sedation was reached.

(1) Background: Factors influencing the quality of life (QoL) of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) are poorly understood. We set out to determine the predictive factors on patients' QoL using the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22); (2) Methods: An ambispective analysis of data from patients diagnosed with CRSwNP in our institution. All the patients underwent a nasal polyp biopsy and completed the SNOT-22 questionnaire.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) portends a poor prognosis. IL-11 has been implicated in fibrotic diseases, but their role on pulmonary vessels is unknown. Here we analyzed the contribution of IL-11 to PH in patients with IPF and the potential mechanism implicated.

Cellular senescence is the arrest of normal cell division and is commonly associated with aging. The interest in the role of cellular senescence in lung diseases derives from the observation of markers of senescence in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and pulmonary hypertension (PH). Accumulation of senescent cells and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype in the lung of aged patients may lead to mild persistent inflammation, which results in tissue damage.

Pediatric cardiac anesthesia is a subspecialty of cardiac and pediatric anesthesiology dedicated to the perioperative care of patients with congenital heart disease. Members of the Congenital and Education Subcommittees of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC) agreed on the necessity to develop an EACTAIC pediatric cardiac anesthesia fellowship curriculum. This manuscript represents a consensus on the composition and the design of the EACTAIC Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship program.

Airway epithelium forms a physical barrier that protects the lung from the entrance of inhaled allergens, irritants, or microorganisms. This epithelial structure is maintained by tight junctions, adherens junctions and desmosomes that prevent the diffusion of soluble mediators or proteins between apical and basolateral cell surfaces. This apical junctional complex also participates in several signaling pathways involved in gene expression, cell proliferation and cell differentiation.

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) comprise different fibrotic lung disorders characterized by cellular proliferation, interstitial inflammation, and fibrosis. The JAK/STAT molecular pathway is activated under the interaction of a broad number of profibrotic/pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-11, and IL-13, among others, which are increased in different ILDs. Similarly, several growth factors over-expressed in ILDs, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) activate JAK/STAT by canonical or non-canonical pathways, which indicates a predominant role of JAK/STAT in ILDs.

Pulmonary hypertension is defined as a group of diseases characterized by a progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), which leads to right ventricular failure and premature death. There are multiple clinical manifestations that can be grouped into five different types. Pulmonary artery remodeling is a common feature in pulmonary hypertension (PH) characterized by endothelial dysfunction and smooth muscle pulmonary artery cell proliferation.

This special article summarizes the design and certification process of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (EACTA) Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia (CTVA) Fellowship Program. The CTVA fellowship training includes a two-year curriculum at an EACTA-accredited educational facility. Before fellows are accepted into the program, they must meet a number of requirements, including evidence of a valid license to practice medicine, a specialist degree examination in anesthesiology, and appropriate language skills as required in the host centers.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the most common idiopathic interstitial pulmonary disease with a median survival of 3-5 years after diagnosis. Recent evidence identifies mucins as key effectors in cell growth and tissue remodeling processes compatible with the processes observed in IPF. Mucins are classified in two groups depending on whether they are secreted (secreted mucins) or tethered to cell membranes (transmembrane mucins).

Recently, the prevalence of childhood obesity has increased alarmingly. Interventions combining eating habits, physical activity (PA), behavioral components, and family support have been shown to be effective, although variables such as self-efficacy beliefs and motivation seem to be important in achieving stable changes. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can provide additional resources to traditional treatments.
