There is currently no consensus regarding preferred clinical outcome measures following image-guided tumor ablation or clear definitions of oncologic end points. This consensus document proposes standardized definitions for a broad range of oncologic outcome measures with recommendations on how to uniformly document, analyze, and report outcomes. The initiative was coordinated by the Society of Interventional Oncology in collaboration with the Definition for the Assessment of Time-to-Event End Points in Cancer Trials, or DATECAN, group.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 continues to pose significant health risks, with dexamethasone as the only treatment consistently reducing mortality so far.
  • Recent studies suggest that convalescent plasma (CP) infusion could be a safe and effective treatment, but more information is needed about how antibodies behave in CP recipients.
  • A study followed 31 CP recipients after infection, revealing that those with low initial antibody responses showed a rapid increase in antibodies and effective virus clearance within two weeks, while those with high initial responses had little change but also cleared the virus effectively.

Objectives: Interventional procedures around the knee are widely adopted for treating different musculoskeletal conditions. A panel of experts from the Ultrasound and Interventional Subcommittees of the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) reviewed the existing literature to assess the evidence on image-guided musculoskeletal interventional procedures around the knee, with the goal of highlighting some controversies associated with these procedures, specifically the role of imaging guidance, as well as the efficacy of the medications routinely injected.

Methods: We report the results of a Delphi-based consensus of 53 experts in musculoskeletal radiology, who reviewed the published literature for evidence on image-guided interventional procedures around the knee to derive a list of pertinent clinical indications.

Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the effectiveness of intra-articular application of Sluijter-Teixera Poisson pulsed radiofrequency (STP PRF) in knee osteoarthritis symptomatic patients with chronic pain refractory to conservative therapies.

Materials And Methods: Institutional database research of two centers identified 39 cases of knee osteoarthritis patients treated with intra-articular STP PRF. Pain prior and one-week and one-, three-, six-, and twelve-month post-STP PRF was compared by means of a numeric visual scale (NVS) questionnaire.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) regulate astrocyte function, while glutamine synthetase (GS), an enzyme highly expressed in astrocytes, is one of the most remarkable GCs-induced genes. GCs mediate their effects through their cognate glucocorticoid receptor (GRα and GRβ isoforms); however, the mechanism via which these isoforms regulate GS activity in astrocytes remains unknown. We used dexamethasone (DEX), a classical GRα/GRβ agonist, RU486, which is a specific GRβ ligand, and Compound A, a known "dissociated" ligand, to delineate the mechanism via which GR modulates GS activity.

Article Synopsis
  • 5-Azacitidine (5-AZA) is commonly used to treat higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes but shows significant variability in response and survival rates among patients.
  • The review emphasizes the importance of identifying clinical, morphological, cytogenetic, and molecular factors that influence treatment outcomes.
  • It also explores predictive biomarkers linked to the effectiveness of 5-AZA, suggesting that these could enhance prognostic classifications for better patient management in the future.

Mitochondrial Glucocorticoid Receptors and Their Actions.

Int J Mol Sci

June 2021

Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Medical School, University General Hospital "ATTIKON", National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, 124 62 Athens, Greece.

Mitochondria are membrane organelles present in almost all eukaryotic cells. In addition to their well-known role in energy production, mitochondria regulate central cellular processes, including calcium homeostasis, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) generation, cell death, thermogenesis, and biosynthesis of lipids, nucleic acids, and steroid hormones. Glucocorticoids (GCs) regulate the mitochondrially encoded oxidative phosphorylation gene expression and mitochondrial energy metabolism.

Towards Clinically Relevant Oculomotor Biomarkers in Early Schizophrenia.

Front Behav Neurosci

June 2021

2nd Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University General Hospital "ATTIKON", Athens, Greece.

In recent years, psychiatric research has focused on the evaluation and implementation of biomarkers in the clinical praxis. Oculomotor function deviances are among the most consistent and replicable cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and have been suggested as viable candidates for biomarkers. In this narrative review, we focus on oculomotor function in first-episode psychosis, recent onset schizophrenia as well as individuals at high risk for developing psychosis.

Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NPC) is a rare, incurable, autosomal-recessive, lysosomal storage disorder with protean and progressive neurovisceral manifestations characterized by accumulation of intracellular unesterified cholesterol. The investigational use of 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) in the treatment of NPC has shown promising results in improving life expectancy and reducing neurological damage in this patient population. This case report describes two children with the neurological form of NPC: a 5-year-old male patient in advanced stage of the disease and an 11-year-old female patient in moderately advanced stage.

Objectives: Image-guided musculoskeletal interventional procedures around the hip are widely used in daily clinical practice. The need for clarity concerning the actual added value of imaging guidance and types of medications to be offered led the Ultrasound and the Interventional Subcommittees of the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) to promote, with the support of its Research Committee, a collaborative project to review the published literature on image-guided musculoskeletal interventional procedures in the lower limb in order to derive a list of clinical indications.

Methods: In this article, we report the results of a Delphi-based consensus of 53 experts who reviewed the published literature for evidence on image-guided interventional procedures offered in the joint and soft tissues around the hip in order of their clinical indications.

Chronic cannabis use and schizophrenia are both thought to affect reward processing. While behavioural and neural effects on reward processing have been investigated in both conditions, their interaction has not been studied, although chronic cannabis use is common among these patients. In the present study eighty-nine participants divided into four groups (control chronic cannabis users and non-users; schizophrenia patient cannabis users and non-users) performed a two-choice decision task, preceded by monetary cues (high/low reward/punishment or neutral), while being scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging.

This study examined whether Parkinson's disease (PD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) share a hypo dopaminergic dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex leading to cognitive impairments in decision processing. 24 medicated PD patients and 28 matched controls performed the Eriksen flanker two-choice reaction time (RT) task while brain activity was measured throughout, using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Results were directly compared to those of 30 SCZ patients and 30 matched controls.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) represents a group of tumors characterized by substantial heterogeneity in terms of their pathological and biological features, a causal factor of their varied clinical outcome. This variation has persisted despite the implementation of rituximab in treatment regimens over the last 20 years. In this context, prognostic biomarkers are of great importance in order to identify high-risk patients that might benefit from treatment intensification or the introduction of novel therapeutic agents.

Theoretical and Physical Chemistry Institute, National Hellenic Research Foundation, 48 Vassileos Constantinou Avenue, 11635 Athens, Greece.

Vaccination is the most valuable and cost-effective health measure to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases. A significant number of infectious diseases and chronic disorders are still not preventable by existing vaccination schemes; therefore, new-generation vaccines are needed. Novel technologies such as nanoparticulate systems and adjuvants can enable safe and effective vaccines for difficult target populations such as newborns, elderly, and the immune-compromised.
