February 2022

National Center of Rare Diseases-Cutaneous Lymphoma-Member of EuroBloodNet, Second Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases, Attikon University General Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, 124 62 Athens, Greece.

The combination of Resminostat (HDACi) and Ruxolitinib (JAKi) exerted cytotoxic effects and inhibited proliferation of CTCL cell lines (MyLa, SeAx) in previously published work. A xenograft tumor formation was produced by implanting the MyLa or SeAx cells on top of the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). The CAM assay protocol was developed to monitor the metastatic properties of CTCL cells and the effects of Resminostat and/or Ruxolitinib in vivo.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a need for better early prediction models for COVID-19 outcomes, specifically morbidity and mortality in hospital settings.
  • The study identified critical genetic variants related to the complement system that are linked to severe COVID-19 outcomes and developed a predictive artificial neural network (ANN) using these variants.
  • The ANN successfully predicted severe outcomes in nearly 90% of patients, highlighting the role of genetic factors in worsening COVID-19 conditions and confirming that these variants are associated with an impaired immune response.

Glucocorticoid Receptor Signaling in Diabetes.

Int J Mol Sci

October 2021

Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University General Hospital "ATTIKON", 12462 Athens, Greece.

Stress and depression increase the risk of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) development. Evidence demonstrates that the Glucocorticoid (GC) negative feedback is impaired (GC resistance) in T2D patients resulting in Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivity and hypercortisolism. High GCs, in turn, activate multiple aspects of glucose homeostasis in peripheral tissues leading to hyperglycemia.

The reasons behind the clinical variability of SARS-CoV-2 infection, ranging from asymptomatic infection to lethal disease, are still unclear. We performed genome-wide transcriptional whole-blood RNA sequencing, bioinformatics analysis and PCR validation to test the hypothesis that immune response-related gene signatures reflecting baseline may differ between healthy individuals, with an equally robust antibody response, who experienced an entirely asymptomatic (n=17) clinical SARS-CoV-2 infection (n=15) in the past months (mean of 14 weeks). Among 12.
