Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is an invasive cancer accounting for <1% of all cancers and 10-15% of primary liver cancers. Intrahepatic CCA (iCCA) is associated with poor survival rates and high post-surgical recurrence rates whilst most diagnosed patients are not surgical candidates. There is a growing literature suggesting percutaneous ablative techniques for the management of patients with iCCA measuring ≤3 cm with contraindications to surgery as well as for recurrent or residual tumors aiming to provide local cancer treatment and control.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a novel RNA type generated by back-splicing, are key regulators of gene expression, with deregulated expression and established involvement in leukemia. The products of BCL2 and its homologs, including BAX and BCL2L12, are implicated in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). However, to the best of our knowledge, nothing is known about circRNAs produced by these two genes and their role in CLL.

Clin Radiol

September 2023

2nd Department of Radiology, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University General Hospital "Attikon", Rimini 1, Haidari, Athens, 124 62, Greece.

Caesarean-section scar endometriosis (CSSE) is a form of extra-pelvic endometriosis developing through endometrial cell implantation anywhere along the route of a previous caesarean section (CS) surgery, including the skin, subcutaneous tissue, abdominal wall muscles, intraperitoneally, and the uterine scar itself. Synchronous intra-abdominal endometriosis is not a prerequisite. Given the rising prevalence of CS, CSSE may be underrepresented in the literature and occur more frequently than previously thought.

Abdom Radiol (NY)

October 2023

2nd Department of Radiology, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University General Hospital "Attikon", Rimini 1, Haidari, 124 62, Athens, Greece.

Acute cholecystitis (AC) is a critical condition requiring immediate medical attention and treatment and is one of the most frequently encountered acute abdomen emergencies in surgical practice, requiring hospitalization. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered the favored treatment for patients with AC who are fit for surgery. However, in high-risk patients considered poor surgical candidates, percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) has been suggested and employed as a safe and reliable alternative option.

The treatment of patients with aortic valve calcification (AVC) and calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS) remains challenging as, until today, all non-invasive interventions have proven fruitless in preventing the disease's onset and progression. Despite the similarities in the pathogenesis of AVC and atherosclerosis, statins failed to show a favorable effect in preventing AVC progression. The recognition of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] as a strong and potentially modifiable risk factor for the development and, perhaps, the progression of AVC and CAVS and the evolution of novel agents leading in a robust Lp(a) reduction, have rekindled hope for a promising future in the treatment of those patients.
