Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effect of the PECAM-1-C373G (Leu125Val) and P-Selectin-A37674C (Thr715Pro) polymorphisms in unexplained spontaneous abortions.
Methods: In a case-control design, Greek nulligravida women with recurrent idiopathic miscarriages <20 weeks of gestation and fertile controls were genotyped by pyrosequencing.
Results: There was no significant association of the PECAM-1-C373G (Leu125Val) polymorphism with recurrent abortions.

Purpose: Pathogenic variants in GABRB3 have been associated with a spectrum of phenotypes from severe developmental disorders and epileptic encephalopathies to milder epilepsy syndromes and mild intellectual disability (ID). In this study, we analyzed a large cohort of individuals with GABRB3 variants to deepen the phenotypic understanding and investigate genotype-phenotype correlations.
Methods: Through an international collaboration, we analyzed electro-clinical data of unpublished individuals with variants in GABRB3, and we reviewed previously published cases.

Background: To compare the prognostic accuracy of the most commonly used indexes of mortality over time and evaluate the potential of adding thromboelastometry (ROTEM) results to these well-established clinical scores.
Methods: The study population consisted of 473 consecutive term and preterm critically-ill neonates. On the first day of critical illness, modified Neonatal Multiple Organ Dysfunction (NEOMOD) scoring system, Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology (SNAP II), Perinatal extension of SNAP (SNAPPE), and SNAPPE II, were calculated and ROTEM standard extrinsically activated (EXTEM) assay was performed simultaneously.

Accumulating data has shown a contribution of the renin-angiotensin system in COVID-19 pathogenesis. The role of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism as a risk factor in developing COVID-19 disease comes from epidemiological data and is controversially discussed. We conducted a retrospective case-control study and assessed the impact of ACE I/D genotype in COVID-19 disease prevalence and severity.

Gene therapy is a relatively novel field that amounts to around four decades of continuous growth with its good and bad moments. Currently, the field has entered the clinical arena with the ambition to fulfil its promises for a permanent fix of incurable genetic disorders. Hemoglobinopathies as target diseases and hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) as target cells of genetic interventions had a major share in the research effort toward efficiently implementing gene therapy.

We describe a cohort of 10 unrelated Greek patients (4 females, 6 males; median age 6.5 years, range 2-18 years) with heterogeneous epilepsy syndromes with a genetic basis. In these patients, causative genetic variants, including two novel ones, were identified in 9 known epilepsy-related genes through whole exome sequencing.

Intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are common surgical emergencies and have been reported as major contributors to non-trauma deaths in hospitals worldwide. The cornerstones of effective treatment of IAIs include early recognition, adequate source control, appropriate antimicrobial therapy, and prompt physiologic stabilization using a critical care environment, combined with an optimal surgical approach. Together, the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery (GAIS), the Surgical Infection Society-Europe (SIS-E), the World Surgical Infection Society (WSIS), and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) have jointly completed an international multi-society document in order to facilitate clinical management of patients with IAIs worldwide building evidence-based clinical pathways for the most common IAIs.

Background: A high-cholesterol diet (HCD) induces vascular atherosclerosis through vascular inflammatory and immunological processes via TLRs. The aim of this study is to investigate the mRNA expression of TLRs and other noxious biomarkers expressing inflammation, fibrosis, apoptosis, and cardiac dysfunction in the rabbit myocardium during (a) high-cholesterol diet (HCD), (b) normal diet resumption and (c) fluvastatin or rosuvastatin treatment.
Methods: Forty-eight male rabbits were randomly divided into eight groups ( = 6/group).

Although the use of laparoscopic surgery is increasing, controversy still surrounds its application for malignant conditions. Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are less demanding in terms of lymphadenectomy, meaning that laparoscopic resection might have a more defined benefit when compared with open resection. To the best of our knowledge, no randomized study exists that compares the laparoscopic and open resection of GISTs.

Immunocompromised patients are a heterogeneous and diffuse category frequently presenting to the emergency department with acute surgical diseases. Diagnosis and treatment in immunocompromised patients are often complex and must be multidisciplinary. Misdiagnosis of an acute surgical disease may be followed by increased morbidity and mortality.

Aim: Maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM), type 1 or type 2, has been established as a potential risk factor for congenital heart disease (CHD). At the same time, the correlation between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and increased risk of CHD has not been yet fully elucidated. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO number: CRD42020182390) was to analyze the existing evidence on PGDM and to attempt to fill, to the best of our ability, the remaining knowledge gap in the association of GDM with CHD.

Introduction: Eosinophils play a central role in the inflammation of asthma and are the target of new biologic treatments for patients with severe asthma. Biologics targeting the IL-5 pathway have been shown to reduce asthma exacerbations, improve lung function, reduce oral corticosteroid use, and improve quality of life, accompanied by reduced or even eliminated blood eosinophils. Eosinophils have been associated with host protection and tumor growth, raising potential concerns about the consequences of these long-term therapies that reduce or eliminate them.

Background: Patients with high-risk acute leukemia have a high risk of relapse after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). In an effort to reduce the relapse rate, various therapeutic methods have been implemented into clinical practice. Among them, prophylactic donor lymphocyte infusion (pro-DLI) has shown significant efficacy.

Robotic-assisted surgery continues to gain ground over conventional surgical methods, due to reported better results regarding the aesthetic outcome and the decreased percentage of complications. Although latissimus dorsi flap harvesting for breast reconstruction has been already used for several years, a plethora of serious complications has been reported. Recently, minimally invasive surgical approaches, such as robotic-assisted technique, have been suggested with conflicting outcomes to overcome technical difficulties.

Background: Our aim was to investigate the role of thromboelastometry (ROTEM) parameters, including maximum clot elasticity (MCE) and platelet component (PLTEM MCE and PLTEM MCF), in early prediction of bleeding events in thrombocytopenic critically ill neonates.
Material And Methods: This single-center, prospective cohort study included 110 consecutive thrombocytopenic neonates with sepsis, suspected sepsis, or hypoxia. On the first day of disease onset, ROTEM EXTEM and FIBTEM assays were performed and the neonatal bleeding assessment tool was used for the evaluation of bleeding events.
