Cat-transmitted sporotrichosis is caused by the emerging fungal pathogen Sporothrix brasiliensis and constitutes a significant public health issue that affects people living in resource-poor urban centers in Brazil. The lack of knowledge about transmission dynamics makes it difficult to propose public health policies to contain the advance of sporotrichosis. We describe the recent emergence of 1,176 cases of sporotrichosis in cats (2016 to 2021) in the metropolitan region of Recife, Brazil, leading to significant zoonotic transmission and an overwhelming occurrence of S.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of antifreeze protein type III (AFP III) on the freezing of epididymal spermatozoa of goats. A total of 16 pairs of testicles were collected in a slaughterhouse and transported at approximately 5 °C in a thermal box. Epididymal spermatozoa were recovered by retrograde lavage and evaluated using a phase contrast microscope.

Hyperketonemia in sheep is associated with a disease known as pregnancy toxemia. The purposes of this study were to (1) induce hyperketonemia by infusion with D-beta-hydroxybutyrate (D-BHB) in eighteen healthy, non-pregnant, non-lactating ewes, (2) to evaluate the metabolic pathways in which recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) may be involved, and (3) to evaluate the possible benefits of preventive rbST therapy on the metabolic profiles of the sheep. The sheep were intravenously infused with a D-BHB solution over 2 h.

Fermented milks are a source of bioactive peptides and may be considered as functional foods. Among these, sheep's milk fermented with kefir has not been widely studied and its most relevant properties need to be more thoroughly characterized. This research study is set out to investigate and evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of peptides from fermented sheep's milk in Brazil when produced by using kefir.

Adiponectin is an adipokine secreted primarily by adipocytes and is involved in the control of male and female reproductive functions. Circulating levels of adiponectin are inversely correlated with body fat mass, and its biological effects are predominantly mediated through two receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2. The aim of the present study was to verify the expression of the adiponectin system (adiponectin and its receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) in goat ovary using qPCR and immunohistochemistry analyses and further investigate the in vitro effects of recombinant adiponectin (5 μg/mL and 10 μg/mL) on goat oocyte nuclear maturation.

The therapeutic use of probiotics for supporting the antibiotic action against gastrointestinal disorders is a current trend and emerging applications have gained popularity because of their support for various microbiological activities in digestive processes. Microorganisms isolated from kefir with great probiotic properties, in addition to high resistance to harsh environmental conditions, have been widely researched. Administration of probiotic yeasts offers a number of advantages, when compared to bacteria, because of particular characteristics as their larger cell size.

Products with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and synthetic insecticides have been widely used against important vectors of human diseases. However, few studies have addressed the application of these substances on the female reproduction apparatus during pregnancy at doses that do not cause clinical symptoms of intoxication. Seventy pregnant albino rats were analyzed with regard to fertility and histopathology of the kidneys, liver and lungs as well as the morphology of the neonates.

An endophytic actinomycete isolated from tubers of yam beam (Pachyrhizus erosus L. Urban) was classified as a novel species nominated Kitasatospora recifensis based in phenotypic and genotypic analysis (16S rDNA gene sequence). Monosporic culture using specific ISP2 media revealed three interspecies, which were identified by DNA southern hybridization (Wild strain 13817 W, Aerial Mycelium strain 13817 AM and Vegetative Mycelium strain 13817 VM).

Phosphate rocks have low available P and soluble P fertilizers have been preferably used in plant crop production, although economic and effective P sources are needed. Experiments were carried out on a Brazilian Typic Fragiudult soil with low available P to evaluate the agronomic effectiveness of phosphate rock (PR) compared with soluble phosphate fertilizer. Yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus) inoculated with rhizobia (strains NFB 747 and NFB 748) or not inoculated was the test crop.

A greenhouse experiment was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effects of the elementary sulphur inoculated with Thiobacillus, compared with gypsum, in the amendment of a alluvial sodic saline soil from the Brazilian semiarid region, irrigated with saline water and grown with the tropical legumes leucena and mimosa. The treatments consisted of levels of sulphur (0; 300 and 600 kg/ha) and gypsum (1,200 and 2,400 kg/ha), irrigation using different waters containing the salts NaHCO3, MgCl2, CaCl2, NaCl and KCl, with different electrical conductivities (ECs: 0.2.
