Cyanobacterial harmful algae blooms (cyanoHABs) are a global threat to water resources, and lake managers need effective strategies to suppress or control them. Algaecides may have negative environmental impacts, and their use is becoming restricted. Nanobubble ozone technology (NBOT) is an emerging water treatment option with potentially fewer negative impacts.

The introduction of additives during the production of wood composites may disrupt the development of bonding strength between wood and adhesive, potentially compromising the structural performance of wood composites. This study investigates the impact of incorporating a natural wood preservative into 3-ply southern yellow pine (SYP) plywood on its bonding strength. The formation of β-cyclodextrin and trans-cinnamaldehyde (βCD-tCN) inclusion complex as a natural wood preservative was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction analyses, with an inclusion yield ranging 78 % to 120 %.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and depression co-occur, and rates are on the rise in adolescents, disproportionately affecting teenagers in rural communities and those who identify as members of historically disadvantaged racial/ethnic groups. Addressing the promotion of health behaviors is important for prevention of these comorbid health concerns; however, disparities in their prevalence highlight that a healthy lifestyle is not equally accessible for all individuals. Thus, holistic and multi-level approaches that address structural inequities, leverage cultural and family assets, and are effectively integrated into the community are critically needed.

The Kellogg Biological Station Long-term Agroecosystem Research site (KBS LTAR) joined the national LTAR network in 2015 to represent a northeast portion of the North Central Region, extending across 76,000 km of southern Michigan and northern Indiana. Regional cropping systems are dominated by corn (Zea mays)-soybean (Glycine max) rotations managed with conventional tillage, industry-average rates of fertilizer and pesticide inputs uniformly applied, few cover crops, and little animal integration. In 2020, KBS LTAR initiated the Aspirational Cropping System Experiment as part of the LTAR Common Experiment, a co-production model wherein stakeholders and researchers collaborate to advance transformative change in agriculture.

The redevelopment of brownfields sites to health-promoting land uses may provide an array of benefits to individuals and communities, but these impacts can be particularly difficult to assess in rural communities using traditional evaluation approaches. This participatory evaluation aimed to explore the impacts of redeveloping rural brownfield sites into health-promoting land uses.

Objective: To assess whether the adult Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a cost-effective intervention that generates sustained improvement in biomarkers of chronic disease risk.
Design: A longitudinal quasi-experimental design with 2 parallel arms (untreated comparison vs EFNEP) and 4 waves of data collection (pretest, posttest, 6 months, and 12 months after completion).
Setting: Eligible adult EFNEP community settings in Colorado, Florida, Maryland, and Washington.

Salmonella Dublin latent carrier cows represent a high risk for infection of newborn calves via intrauterine transmission and shedding of bacteria in feces and colostrum at calving. Vaccination of these latent carrier dams during late gestation boosts immunity against Salmonella Dublin. This could reduce the activation of the dormant bacteria during the periparturient immune dysfunction period, thereby reducing the risk of early-life infection in the offspring.

This report explores the 24-hour dietary recall (24HDR) form used for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). Dietary supplement use, amount of money spent on food, time being physically active, portion size consumed, foods reported by meals, and preparation of the meal were common components collected among 61 EFNEP programs. Components not included were instructions for the peer educator, use of food models/measuring cups, examples of foods/beverages, time food/beverages were consumed, color coding, and a prompt to review what was written.

Background: Autologous nasoseptal cartilage grafts are used to correct nasal asymmetry and deviation in rhinoplasty, but patients who have undergone multiple surgeries may have limited autologous cartilage tissue available. 3D-printed L-strut implants may address these challenges in the future, but their mechanical strength is understudied. Silk fibroin-gelatin (SFG), polycaprolactone (PCL), and polylactide (PLA) are bio-inks known for their strength.

Children with special health care needs (CSHCN)-ie, children who are at increased risk for, or currently manage, persistent physical and mental health conditions-require more health care resources than children without special health care needs. Furthermore, CSHCN who identify as racial/ethnic minorities disproportionately encounter unmet needs, according to reports from their caregivers. However, the reasons for their unmet needs are relatively unknown.

Cooked, uncured meat products packaged under reduced oxygen packaging conditions require the control of anaerobic and facultative anaerobic pathogens if they are held at temperatures greater than 3°C at retail or consumer level. The objective of this study was to determine the inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes and Clostridium botulinum in cooked, uncured shredded turkey and pork formulated with synthetic or clean-label antimicrobials. Treatments of shredded meat products were prepared with or without antimicrobials using turkey thigh or breast that were cooked to 85°C, shredded, and chilled before inoculation with the target pathogen.

The spotted lanternfly, (White) (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae), was first detected in the United States in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 2014. Native to China, this phloem-feeding planthopper threatens agricultural, ornamental, nursery, and timber industries in its invaded range through quarantine restrictions on shipments, as well as impacts on plants themselves. The long-term impacts of feeding on tree species have not been well studied in North America.

However, urban environments often have greenspaces that can support wildlife populations, including rare species. The challenge for conservation planners working in these systems is identifying priority habitats and corridors for protection before they are lost.

Researchers are increasingly using web-based technologies to deliver family-based, prevention programming. Few studies have examined the success of such approaches for families with low incomes. The purpose of this study was to describe the level of in-class and online engagement in a childhood obesity prevention program for parents with low incomes, to examine the demographic correlates of parent engagement, and to examine dosage effects on parental feeding outcomes as a function of online exposure.

Promoting conservation on rented farmland is a challenge for stakeholders working with non-operating landowners (NOLs) and tenant farmers (operators). We conducted an online survey to identify stakeholders who engage with NOLs, and understand how their positioning as 'intermediaries' could be leveraged to help bridge the NOL-operator communication gap. A majority of identified stakeholders/intermediaries worked in government agencies, university extension, law firms, or farm management companies.
