The prepubertal period is crucial for sexual development and any alterations can interfere with the reproductive system in adulthood. The aim of this study was to evaluate how Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) can affect the testes during the prepubertal period. Juvenile male Wistar rats were divided into a control (corn oil + DMSO) and a BaP-group (0.

Several pollutants can alter neonatal prostatic development predisposing this gland to diseases. The toxicity and endocrine disrupting potential of aluminum has been reported in many organs, but little is known about its effects on the prostate. This study aimed to evaluate the effects that aluminum neonatal exposure can cause in the male ventral prostate and in the female prostate of adult and senile gerbils.

Backgroung: Exposure to environmental pollutants in critical developmental windows may predispose the prostate to permanent changes in its homeostasis. Thus, it is essential to know the effects that environmental toxics, such as aluminum, can cause during the development of this gland. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of neonatal aluminum exposure on the ventral male prostate and the female prostate of 15 days old gerbils.

Calcium aluminate cement (CAC) as a biomaterial has been evaluated for its physical, mechanical and biocompatibility properties. Furthermore, the application of CAC for bone repair is due to its composition and coefficient of thermal expansion, which is similar to that of human bone. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate compositions of CAC-based blends as substitutes for bone defects.

Purpose: Orthodontic treatment is based on the principle of force application to teeth and subsequently to the surrounding tissues and periodontal cells. Sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1) is a well-known marker for autophagy, which is an important cellular mechanism of adaptation to stress. The aim of this study was to analyze whether biomechanical loading conditions regulate SQSTM1 in periodontal cells and tissues, thereby providing further information on the role of autophagy in orthodontic tooth movement.

Strategy of Mandibular Central Arch Reconstruction After Firearm Injury.

J Craniofac Surg

October 2019

Department of Surgery and Integrated Clinic, Araçatuba School of Dentistry, University Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Araçatuba, Sao Paulo.

Gunshot wounds can cause extensive destruction of soft tissue and bone, and the maxillofacial region is often affected. The reconstructive treatment is complex due to the difficulty to reestablish the central arch mandibular contour and volume. Moreover, the goal is to avoid postoperative infections and obtain bone graft neovascularization.

Some types of primary headaches and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are comorbid in adults and highly prevalent in adolescents. Herein, we investigated the association of painful TMD with specific headache diagnoses (migraine, tension-type headache) and with headache frequency in adolescents. We also explored the association of headache diagnosis with the number of painful sites in the trigeminal area.

The chemical composition of biomaterials can drive their biological responses; therefore, this in vitro study aimed to evaluate the proteomic profile of the salivary pellicle formed on titanium (Ti) alloys containing niobium (Nb) and zirconium (Zr). The experimental groups consisted of Ti35NbxZr (x = 5 and 10 wt%) alloys, and commercially pure titanium (cpTi); titanium aluminium vanadium (Ti6Al4V) alloys were used as controls. The physical and chemical characteristics of the Ti materials were analysed.

Biodiversity is key for maintenance of life and source of richness. Nevertheless, concepts such as phenotype expression are also pivotal to understand how chemical diversity varies in a living organism. Sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloids (SPAs) and quinonemethide triterpenes (QMTs) accumulate in root bark of Celastraceae plants.

Department of Histology, Embryology and Cell Biology, Laboratory of Microscopy Applied to Reproduction, Institute of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Goiás, Goiânia, Goiás 74001970, Brazil. Electronic address:

Normal prostate development is highly dependent of an equilibrated hormonal regulation, so that sensible interferences during this period may predispose the gland to lesions during aging. Industrial activities have increased the exposure of this gland to active elements found in environment, such as aluminum (Al). Al presents toxic effect for living beings, having the potential to disrupt the development and growth of several organs and systems.

Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of catecholamines and has been connected to aggravated progression of periodontal disease under chronic stress. Obesity is known to increase the risk of periodontitis and adipokines have been suggested to be a pathomechanistic link. This study examines if obesity-associated stimuli have regulatory effects on TH levels in periodontal cells and tissues.

Department of Restorative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Chile, Independencia, Santiago, Chile.

Purpose: Intracoronary bleaching is a minimally invasive, alternative treatment that addresses aesthetic concerns related to non-vital teeth discoloration. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have assessed the psychosocial impacts of such procedures on patients' aesthetic perceptions. The aim of this study was to evaluate aesthetic perceptions and the psychosocial impact of patients up to 3 months after their teeth had been bleached with hydrogen peroxide (35%) and carbamide peroxide (37%) using the walking bleach technique.

Upper Airway Obstruction in a Panfacial Fracture.

J Craniofac Surg

November 2018

Department of Surgery and Integrated Clinic, Araçatuba Dental School, University Estadual Paulista - UNESP, Araçatuba, Brazil.

Panfacial fractures are considered the most aggressive and complex facial fracture, and most of them are the results of a high energy trauma. Therefore, a clinical report of a male patient with a panfacial fracture and Richards type 3 fracture resulting in an airway obstruction is presented. This type of fracture can promote an upper airway obstruction, which needs a correct and fast diagnosis to the life support of the patient.
