Environmental light serves as the main entraining signal for the central circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus (SCN). To shift clock timing with the changing environment, minute adjustments are necessary and the endocannabinoid system (ECS) acts as a neuromodulatory signaling mechanism in the SCN. These systems exert bidirectional effects on one another, still, limited knowledge exists about the role of endocannabinoids in circadian rhythm regulation.

In defense of the one-factor doxastic account: A phenomenal account of delusions.

According to the doxastic model, delusions are beliefs. In the metacognitive model, delusions are imaginings mistaken for beliefs. I argue that endorsement of false second-order beliefs could also create unpleasant dissonance, that mentally healthy people often endorse irrational or conflicting beliefs, and that the lack of delusion-motivated action can be explained by the influence of nonbelief factors on action.

Within the zebra finch song system, robust sex differences exist that enable singing behavior in males, but not females. Estradiol is a potent contributor to this process, but how and through which receptor(s) it acts is not clear. Historically, pharmacological manipulations of nuclear estrogen receptors have yielded conflicting results possibly due to method of drug delivery.

In zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), estradiol contributes to sexual differentiation of the song system but the receptor(s) underlying its action are not exactly known. Whereas mRNA and/or protein for nuclear estrogen receptors ERα and ERβ are minimally expressed, G-protein coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1) has a much greater distribution within neural song regions and the syrinx. At present, however, it is unclear if this receptor contributes to dimorphic development of the song system.

In aquatic ecosystems, the cycling and toxicity of nickel (Ni) are coupled to other elemental cycles that can limit its bioavailability. Current sediment risk assessment approaches consider acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) as the major binding phase for Ni, but have not yet incorporated ligands that are present in oxic sediments. Our study aimed to assess how metal oxides play a role in Ni bioavailability in surficial sediments exposed to effluent from two mine sites.

Neural correlates of food anticipatory activity in mice subjected to once- or twice-daily feeding periods.

In rodents, restricted food access to a limited period each day at a predictable time results in the appearance of food anticipatory activity (FAA). Two shorter periods of food access each day can result in two FAA bouts. In this study, we examine FAA under 12:12 and 18:6 photoperiods in mice (Mus musculus) with one or two food access periods per day and measure the activation of the suprachiasmatic, dorsomedial and arcuate nuclei by assaying Fos protein expression, while making use of tissue-type plasminogen activator knockout mice to assess the role of neural plasticity in adaptation to restricted feeding cycles.

Extensive membrane blebbing is one of the earliest observable changes in HeLa cells stimulated with apoptosis inducers. Blebbing caused by actinomycin D or camptothecin, but not by anti-Fas antibody, is accompanied by an almost 10% volume increase as measured by transmission-through-dye microscopy. When the experiment is carried out in DMEM medium, the swelling appears to result from activation of amiloride-sensitive channels.

Optical determination of intracellular water in apoptotic cells.

Intracellular water plays a critical role in apoptotic and necrotic cell death. We describe a method for quantifying cell water by application of two previously described variants of transmission microscopy. By taking two axially displaced brightfield images, the phase shift of the transmitted wave was computed using the transport-of-intensity equation.

In this study, we have evaluated the hypophyso-gonadal axis in three groups of men aged 60-69, 70-79 and 80-91 years by measuring the intratesticular concentrations of several steroids (pregnenolone, progesterone, DHEA, DHEA-S, testosterone, estradiol) and serum levels of FSH, LH, testosterone, estradiol and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). The histological examination of testes revealed normal spermatogenesis in all examined samples. No significant changes in serum hormone and SHBG concentrations as well as in testicular steroid contents among the three groups of patients were found.
