  • * These nutrient-starved cancer cells showed increased amounts and sizes of lysosomes, which were primarily located near the nucleus, due to a boost in the protein Rab7a responsible for lysosomal trafficking.
  • * The acidic environment of lysosomes in these cells can trap certain drugs like doxorubicin, contributing to drug resistance, but this resistance can be mitigated by using a lysosomal inhibitor, bafilomycin A1, which, along with 5-Fluorouracil, significantly reduced microtumor volume in tests.

J Am Chem Soc

October 2024

Inorganic Chemistry II-Catalyst Design, Sustainable Chemistry Center, University of Bayreuth, 95440 Bayreuth, Germany.

Iron is the most abundant transition metal of the Earth's crust, and the understanding of its function in key technologies, such as catalysis, is highly important. We report here on an iron(I) hydrogenation catalyst. Our catalyst activates hydrogen via heterolytic bond cleavage, forms a monohydride, and hydrogenates polar double bonds via a bimetallic pathway (potassium-assisted hydride transfer).

The non-covalent functionalization of black phosphorus (BP) was studied with a scope of ten tailor-made perylene diimides (PDIs). A combination of UV/Vis-, fluorescence-, as well as Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy was used to investigate the structural factors, which contribute to a pronounced PDI-BP interaction and thus support the protection of BP nanosheets against oxidative degradation. We were able to show, that water-soluble, amphiphilic PDIs with highly charged head groups can be used for the non-covalent functionalization of BP in aqueous media.

Here, we present a method for enrichment of double-stranded cfDNA with an average length of ∼40 bp from cfDNA for high-throughput DNA sequencing. This class of cfDNA is enriched at gene promoters and binding sites of transcription factors or structural DNA-binding proteins, so that a genome-wide DNA footprint is directly captured from liquid biopsies. In short double-stranded cfDNA from healthy individuals, we find significant enrichment of 203 transcription factor motifs.

Cytokines in gingivitis and periodontitis: from pathogenesis to therapeutic targets.

Front Immunol

September 2024

Department of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, Uniklinikum Erlangen, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erlangen, Germany.

Chronic inflammatory processes in the oral mucosa and periodontitis are common disorders caused by microflora and microbial biofilms. These factors activate both the innate and adaptive immune systems, leading to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Cytokines are known to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of gingivitis and periodontitis and have been proposed as biomarkers for diagnosis and follow-up of these diseases.

J Crohns Colitis

August 2024

Department of Medicine 1, Gastroenterology, Pneumology and Endocrinology, Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Erlangen, Germany.

Objective: Recently, autoantibodies directed against the epithelial adhesion protein integrin αVβ6 have been identified which strongly associate with ulcerative colitis (UC). We aimed to elucidate whether anti-integrin αVβ6 (anti- αVβ6) is present in primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), its associated inflammatory bowel disease or other cholestatic liver diseases and their persistence after proctocolectomy.

Design: We detected anti- αVβ6 by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in sera collected at two German tertiary centers, including healthy controls (N=62), UC (N=36), Crohn's disease (CD, N=65), PSC-IBD (78 samples from N=41 patients), PSC without IBD (PSC, 41 samples from N=18 patients), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC, N=24), autoimmune hepatitis (AIH, N=32), secondary sclerosing cholangitis (SSC, N=12) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, N=24).
