Carboxypeptidase is a Zn-dependent protease that specifically recognises and hydrolyses peptides with a hydrophobic side chain at the C-terminal residue. According to hydrolysis mechanisms proposed in the literature, catalysis requires a water molecule to be close to the Zn ion so as to be activated as a nucleophile. Among small molecules that resemble the slowly hydrolysed Gly-Tyr peptide, which have been previously designed as inhibitors and characterised structurally, a variant with the terminal amino acid in a D-configuration has been the most effective.

Tumor cells are decorated with aberrant glycan structures on cell surfaces. It is well known that the glycocalyx serves as a main cellular regulator, although its role in cancer is still not completely understood. Over recent decades, several non-natural monosaccharides carrying clickable groups have been introduced in melanoma cells.

Reducing the iridium demand in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers (PEM WE) is a critical priority for the green hydrogen industry. This study reports the discovery of a TiO-supported Ir@IrO(OH) core-shell nanoparticle catalyst with reduced Ir content, which exhibits superior catalytic performance for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) compared to a commercial reference. The TiO-supported Ir@IrO(OH) core-shell nanoparticle configuration significantly enhances the OER Ir mass activity from 8 to approximately 150 A g at 1.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is characterized by a reddish or occasionally skin-toned rough patch on sun-damaged skin, and it is regarded as a precursor to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Photodynamic therapy (PDT), utilizing 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) along with red light, is a recognized treatment option for AK that is limited by the penetration depth of light and the distribution of the photosensitizer into the skin. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a partially ionized gas with permeability-enhancing and anti-cancer properties.

To date, the reflections Si 220 or Si 111 have been used exclusively in neutron scattering, which provide resolutions for triple-bounce crystals of about 2 × 10 Å (FWHM). The Darwin width of the GaAs 200 reflection is about a factor of 10 smaller, offering the possibility of a resolution of 2 × 10 Å provided crystals of sufficient quality are available.

The diiron(II) complex, [(OCO)Fe(MeCN)] (, MeCN = acetonitrile), supported by the bis-phenolate carbene pincer ligand, 1,3-bis(3,5-di--butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazolin-2-ylidene (OCO), was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, H nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared (IR) vibrational, ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared (UV/vis/NIR) electronic absorption, Fe Mössbauer, X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and SQUID magnetization measurements. Complex activates dioxygen to yield the diferric, μ-oxo-bridged complex [(OCO)Fe(py)(μ-O)Fe(O(C═O)O)(py)] () that was isolated and fully characterized. In , one of the iron-carbene bonds was oxidized to give a urea motif, resulting in an O(C═O)O binding site, while the other Fe(OCO) unit remained unchanged.

Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) is the causative agent of Borna disease, a fatal neurologic disorder of domestic mammals and humans, resulting from spill-over infection from its natural reservoir host, the bicolored white-toothed shrew (Crocidura leucodon). The known BoDV-1-endemic area is remarkably restricted to parts of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. To gain comprehensive data on its occurrence, we analysed diagnostic material from suspected BoDV-1-induced encephalitis cases based on clinical and/or histopathological diagnosis.

Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an inevitably fatal condition that leads to a progressive loss of physical functioning, which results in a high psychosocial burden and organizational challenges related to medical care. Multidimensional and multiprofessional care is advised to meet the complex needs of patients and their families. Many healthcare systems, including Germany, may not be able to meet these needs because non-medical services such as psychological support or social counselling are not regularly included in the care of patients with ALS (pwALS).

Photoelectrochemical water splitting on n-type semiconductors is highly dependent on catalysis of the rate-determining reaction of O evolution. Conventionally, in electrochemistry and photoelectrochemistry O evolution is catalyzed by metal oxide catalysts like IrO and RuO, whereas noble metals such as Pt are considered unsuitable for this purpose. However, our study finds that Pt, in its single-atom form, exhibits exceptional cocatalytic properties for photoelectrochemical water oxidation on a TiO photoanode, in contrast to Pt in a nanoparticle form.

Malignant melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer, is often incurable once metastatic dissemination of cancer cells to distant organs has occurred. We investigated the role of Transcription Factor Activating Enhancer-Binding Protein 2ε (AP2ε) in the progression of metastatic melanoma. Here, we observed that AP2ε is a potent activator of metastasis and newly revealed AP2ε to be an important player in melanoma plasticity.

Background: Melanoma is a highly heterogeneous cancer, in which frequent changes in activation of signaling pathways lead to a high adaptability to ever changing tumor microenvironments. The elucidation of cancer specific signaling pathways is of great importance, as demonstrated by the inhibitor of the common BrafV600E mutation PLX4032 in melanoma treatment. We therefore investigated signaling pathways that were influenced by neurotrophin NRN1, which has been shown to be upregulated in melanoma.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS) is widely regarded as a competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst to replace platinum in proton exchange membrane water electrolysers (PEMWEs). Despite the extensive knowledge of its HER activity, stability insights under HER operation are scarce. This is paramount to ensure long-term operation of Pt-free PEMWEs, and gain full understanding on the electrocatalytically-induced processes responsible for HER active site generation.

Alcohol consumption is a widespread phenomenon throughout the world. However, how recreational alcohol use evolves into alcohol use disorder (AUD) remains poorly understood. The Smpd3 gene and its coded protein neutral sphingomyelinase (NSM) are associated with alcohol consumption in humans and alcohol-related behaviors in mice, suggesting a potential role in this transition.

Malignant melanoma remains the most lethal form of skin cancer, exhibiting poor prognosis after forming distant metastasis. Owing to their potential tumor-suppressive properties by regulating oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, microRNAs are important player in melanoma development and progression. We defined the loss of miR-101-3p expression in melanoma cells compared with melanocytes and melanoblast-related cells as an early event in tumor development and aimed to understand the tumor suppressive role of miR-101-3p and its regulation of important cellular processes.

Decoration of semiconductor photocatalysts with cocatalysts is generally done by a step-by-step assembly process. Here, we describe the self-assembling and self-activating nature of a photocatalytic system that forms under illumination of reduced anatase TiO nanoparticles in an aqueous Ni solution. UV illumination creates a Ni/TiO/Ti photocatalyst that self-activates and, over time, produces H at a higher rate.
